Cap Clearing trade?

Figured this would get lost in the now mega-thread of Hayward stuff.
The Celtics still need a trade or two to get far enough under the cap to sign Hayward.
According to cap experts they can go the following ways:

A. - Trade Jackson and Rozier for no salary return

B. Trade Smart for very little $$ return

C. Trade Bradley or Crowder for little $$ return.

So the question becomes... who's looking and what can they get back.

My ideal trade is AB to the 76ers for Richaun Holmes. Not sure if Philly would bite though. Most likely, it'll be something like Crowder to Sacramento for minimal return. Or one of AB/Crowder to a playoff contender under the cap for a late 1st.

Trading Crowder to a team under the cap makes the most sense for the roster and for cap space.
I think that's right. Because of his contract he has more trade value than Bradley, and I would be shocked if Ainge and Stevens wouldn't keep Smart, who is a gamer.

Smart is also 23 so he always has the possibility of taking another step forward. He's also a better fit with IT4 on the court, although Hayward being able to play the 2 eliminates some of that need. Smart also seems like the piece that would have the most value to a rebuilding team so keeping him as a piece for when a star comes on the market would be nice.

Pretty sure they have no cap space after signing Jrue Holiday, but I guess technically they might not have signed him yet.
they haven't, no signings can actually happen until the 6th. I believe they might have space to absorb a 5-8M contract before they re-sign Holiday.

Can't they trade him for Ajinca and some other filler and a first and save a couple million, in addition to waiving Jackson to get under?

you'd have to think whatever its going to be DA already had lined up and ready to go. If he waited til now teams would hold his feet to the fire even more than before because Gordon has agreed

Assuming Yabusele agrees to go to Europe for the 17-18 season and assuming Theis is signing for the minimum, BOS needs to clear approx. $1.85mm immediately.

Here's my thought: Crowder ($6.8mm) or Smart ($4.5mm) to CHI for Bobby Portis ($1.5mm) and a lotto-protected 1st round pick.

Note: trading Bradley ($8.8mm) would allow BOS to take back almost $7mm in a salaried player (or $7.8mm in two players).

EDIT: updated for maths

Crowder needs to be the one to go. With Tatum and Brown and now Hayward, I don't see the minutes to keep him happy.

I think return for Crowder may be the best, but isn't he going to play a bunch of minutes at the 4, where they are weak? Tatum will get some run there, but can't be counted on defensively yet.

They could keep Jackson if they traded AB for Ajinca. I doubt they will, but they could.
They should do that, then. Add some protections to the pick and it makes sense for both teams, to my mind. Would have to be for a 2018 first rounder/pick swap, though. If the Pelicans can add Bradley and an MLE player, they can probably convince themselves that they will be a playoff team in the West.

I'd like to hold onto Rozier. Definitely a gamble though, he realllyyyyyyyy struggled with consistency.

I think it will be Bradley or Smart. Both coming up for new contracts at the same time as IT, even 2 of them is tough, 3 impossible. Bradley likely commands the most both in trade and in FA coming up so he's the guy sadly i think gets moved.

I think who gets traded depends on 1) who they can sign for the room exception and the vet minimum, and 2) what the return would be on the traded players.

All three of those rumored players, AB, MS, JC, all have positive value

He also has the biggest cap number, so they could take back a player potentially. Smart's contract isn't big enough by itself to create max room for Hayward.

I think it's got to be Crowder on the way out. The only trades that result in Bradley leaving town is a return package that includes a young, rotational player that can help next year. If all that's on table is a first rounder, why make the trade? Bradley is a valuable, flexible player that can help the C's contend with Cavs next year. I'd rather go all in with a year of Thomas-Bradley-Heyward-Horford core and let him walk... then give him up for another first rounder.

Bradley/Jackson for Okafor/Stauskas works and clears $1.3 mil. I know we all hate Okafor, but getting a big would be nice (and it's hard to make cap work for a deal for Holmes)

Assuming Yabusele agrees to go to Europe for the 17-18 season and assuming Theis is signing for the minimum, BOS needs to clear approx. $4.3mm immediately.
If Yabusele stays overseas, they only need to clear about a million.

These ten

Horford
Bradley
Crowder
Thomas
Tatum
Brown
Smart
Rozier
Zizic
D. Jackson

add up to around 69.7

Need to add 800K for an empty roster charge to get to 70.5

Hayward would be the 12th charge at 29.7

Would be 100.2M. Need to be at 99.1

Could get under just by dumping Rozier, possibly Jackson, if they wanted to do the bare minimum.

PHI is still under the cap, right? Very easy to make a deal work for Holmes. But PHI just signed Reddick for big bucks. They wouldnt want Bradley

Okafor is a big, but we don't need "a big" we need someone who can play C competently in the NBA, Jahlil Okafor can't do that, and when it comes to defense and rebounding it's unlikely he ever will.

But BOS needs to clear $4.3mm. It makes no sense to trade one of Bradley, Crowder or Smart and then need a second trade.

I don't think they are under the cap post-Reddick/Amir signings are they?

Stevens is great at finding roles and maximizing potential of players (Jordan Crawford, Evan Turner, Brandon Bass, etc), and Okafor would be another challenge there. He was woeful on defense and literally offers no floor spacing potential.. while not being a player you can rely on in the PNR game.

Another trade that works for cap purposes: Bradley ($8.8mm) to LAL for Julius Randle ($4.15mm, RFA after 17-18).
Randle is worth more than that. I might add in a first (one of the Celts own, or LAC one) but don't think LAL would be interested even then

I am not an Okafor guy, but there have been so many rumors Celts are sniffing around him I think we need to consider possibility they see something. If so, I hope they are right as he seems lost in today's NBA to me, but without full scouting or anything

Bradley and Crowder to Phoenix for Tyson Chandler.

They haven't signed yet.
Right, none of these guys have. But if they add $7 mil in Bradley will they have enough left to still sign those guys to those deals? If not, they aren't going to welsh on the agreement.

Somewhere
Of the trade candidates, I like Crowder the best from an on-court perspective. But he's going to lose some minutes one way or another and he was pretty unhappy when Celtics fans were cheering for Hayward earlier this season. My guess is Ainge does right by him and gets some minor (read: disappointing) compensation in return.

My number is off by $2.45mm (I counted 15 roster spots). So, it's $1.85mm, rather than $4.3mm. Note that Mickey's contract is guaranteed at $1.5mm as of 7/1.

Cutting Jackson doesn't save cap room, because you need an empty roster charge. Trading Rozier doesn't save enough, for the same reason.

Crowder for Portis makes great sense for the Celtics, I doubt you'd get a first as well though. It's going to be obvious that Ainge has little leverage at this point.

The other thing to remember is that if they are within $600k post-Jackson move they may get Hayward to agree to take that much less in year one. I know what the press release says, but easy for him to give them that and the agent won't care.

Asking as a NBA cap novice, is the issue they have to clear enough cap space (to get under $99 million) before they can actually sign Hayword?

Or asked another way, the Warriors, huh?

Perhaps this had something to do with this afternoons delay??

I believe Mickeys' contract doesn't become guaranteed til the 15th. Couldn't find it online but Adam Himmlesbach noted it here.

I'm pretty sure they would've cut him loose by the 1st if that was the opt out date. They knew the cap crunch was coming.
