Love it! I guessed 6/168 last week, glad that Boras came back to reality a little bit here.

Great move by the Yankees. After all the other deals going down, this contract seems sane.

Awesome! The AL East is a tough neighborhood and another quality arm helps.

Glad that Cashman got it done. The reasonable price was a bonus.

Reports were that no one else wanted to go past maybe 4 years for the oft-injured Rodon, so Boras backed down slightly from the 7/200 he has been floating recently.

That seems like a very reasonable deal. If you can get 3 stellar years from that contract, it is a steal. Anything on top would be gravy — and if he sucks / is hurt the last 3 years, it doesn’t feel like $27 aav will hurt too much.

It IS possible to get Boras to blink sometimes. I think when J.D, Martinez became a free agent, Boras was saying he wanted eight years, but once the Yankees traded for Stanton, Dombrowski held firm on five years.

It's gotta be nice to support a team who has holes, and every season spends whatever is necessary to fill them. And if it doesnt work, they just spend and try again the next year. Meanwhile the Sox are exploring the bargain bin.

This is not a dig, truly jealous of the fact your team actually appears committed to trying to win.

Now that they are paying judge, they have to go all in during Judge's productive years.
There were a lot of rumors that Hal promised Judge a big acquisition or two if he agreed to come back.

If nobody else would go past 4 and Boras got 6 plus a no trade, I’ll call that a win.

Just to note that when you're Scott Boras, "blinking" means taking six years when every other team wouldn't go past four. Love him, hate him, he's very good at his job.

ETA this is a good get for the MFY.

He is phenomenal at his job. If I had a baseball-playing son, I would want Boras to be his agent.

God fucking damnit. I really liked Rodon, and now I have to rationalize this as "well, this deal is reasonable so his medicals must have some red flags". This is damn near worst case scenario.

I said this a week ago and I’ll ask it again. Is there a free agent in this market that Boras is NOT representing?
It seriously sounds like he’s on at least half of the big ones.

In hindsight, is this why they traded Monty at the deadline? Picked up the starting center fielder and then replaced Monty with an even better lefty starter.

Great work by Cashman.

Yeah, it didn't have to be hindsight, this is what I was saying then, that Cashman had four rotation spots locked in for 2023 after trading for Montas and thought he could do better in the 5th one. This is also why NY did not offer Taillon a QO (plus they would have only gotten a 4th rounder back) because they did not want to take the chance he would accept and fill that 5th spot.

YES did an edition of Hot Stove today at 6:30 that just missed this news, so they have added another one live at 10 PM to cover it.

I feel like opt-outs were the big rage over the last few years, but I have heard less about them with the big signings this winter. Lots of no-trade though.

Am I missing the opt-out talk? Are these contracts so long and player friendly the agents just stopped making it a sticking point?

Players are giving up opt-outs in return for double-digit years on the deal, I think.

Yeah, agreed.

If you're 30 and taking a 10+ year deal, almost zero chance you are going to opt out at age 33 with 7 years left. Opt outs make a lot more sense when the AAV is higher at the start of the deal.

These guys are essentially underpaid early on in the contract, so it's highly unlikely they will opt out just when they about to start being overpaid.

If it makes you feel better, over the past six seasons, innings pitched:
Carlos Rodon: 543
Chris Sale: 567

I don't know if this is a good move. Rodon's innings total gives me pause. But it's infuriating to see the Yankees making moves while Bloom is "in on" every free agent that signs elsewhere.

Rodon is full of risk, for sure. But I suppose if some Sox fans want to go back six years for something to be hopeful about, Yankee fans can look back at the last two, and everyone can be happy about something.

I think the Rodon deal is totally about the next three years or so. That seems to be the window.

I'm with you. In terms of future expectations, the past two years seem a lot more relevant than the preceding four years.

I tried to find the link before and couldn't, but he reworked his mechanics with help before 2021 and has basically been healthy since, although the big innings jump in 2021 caused him to run out of steam down the stretch.

Rodon press conference at 10 AM EST on YES. One bit of good news is that Matt Blake is on the dais, he hasn't been officially announced as re-signing yet but clearly he isn't going anywhere.

I knew Rodon had been amazing the past two seasons but I'm not sure I realized just how amazing.

310 innings, a WHIP under 1, 2.67 ERA, 2.42 FIP, 422 Ks to just 88 BBs.

If I think about pitchers who have absolutely dominated NY in the past two seasons in a single game, the first to come to mind is Cristian Javier this June:

7 0 0 0 1 13, on 115 pitches, HOU went on to finish the no-hitter.

Maybe even more dominant was Rodon vs NY in May 2021:

6 2 0 0 0 13, on 95 pitches. Rodon left in a 0-0 game and NY got 6 hits and 2 runs in the next 2 innings to win 2-1, showing even more how dominant Rodon was when he was in the game. I'm so excited to watch him in pinstripes every 5 games, please stay healthy.

Rodón is indeed taking Domingo German's number as well as his rotation spot, he has worn 55 for the last 4 seasons. Dunno what that means for the future of Domingo in NY...

Assuming German is on his way out, trimming two DV guys off the roster this offseason feels like another win for the Yankees even if only in terms of clubhouse chemistry and PR. May also make them more likely to re-sign Zack Britton if they want to.

NY doesn't have great rotation depth behind the top 5, but there is a good chance they move German while he still has two years of control, as he should have some real value right now. He was out the bulk of last season injured, had a couple poor games when first coming back, but had a 3.06 ERA over the final two months in 64.2 innings and is still pretty cheap.

Agreed about the DV thing, Cashman didn't want to dump him until he regained some value but he definitely did that down the stretch, so I think there's a good chance he's moved in one of the upcoming trades.

I'm not sure dumping two DV offenders only after they've worn out their usefulness deserves kudos.

Yeah I wasn't giving kudos (nor would I) or suggesting that it's some great moral victory (it's certainly not after years of employing Chapman and German). I am, however, suggesting that it would be addition by subtraction for the Yankees.

Apparently he was just diagnosed with a Chronic Back condition
Carlos Rodon said he has been told his back issue is "chronic." He is tentatively scheduled to have the cortisone injection next week. Asked if a July return is realistic, he said: "I can't put a timeline on anything. I'll get this injection and I want to throw as soon as I can."
