I think We are about a month from when Trade activity could heat up. I believe that around the 10th of Jan some players begin to become eligible for trades (not just our but "theirs").

Regardless at some point in Jan or Feb we may well be looking to add to an already talented roster.
So List what you feel the assets are:
PP
'25 first
Pick Swap
Gallos contract
Davidson
Begarin
(what else)

List who you feel might be some possible Available additions
With the emergence of Kornet as a viable 2.5- 3rd String big man I suggest

Admiral Schofield Orlando.
Cheap. Cant cost much. Wing Depth

Would orlando take PP?

I expect some Poetl suggestions.
I might also suggest
Charles Bassey SAS PF/C

Discuss and add your suggestions.

Mo Bamba?

*edit* On the Poeltl front:

https://www.spurstalk.com/latest-spurs-intel-trade-rumors-possible-signings/
'If the Spurs don’t get their asking price for Poeltl, expect the team to hold onto him instead of selling him to the highest bidder at the trade deadline. While preparing for Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio has come to the conclusion that Poeltl would be a perfect fit next to the young Frenchman.

-Another interesting development is word that Poeltl may prefer to stay with the Spurs. To make sure that happens, he would sign a four-year, $58 million extension. That’s the maximum amount of money the Spurs could give him in an extension during the season.

I would hope the Celtics hold out until further developments to see where they’ll need injury insurance or replacement if the worst occurs.

I don't see who is a big upgrade on Kornet, outside of Poeltl (who, as noted above, may not be available).

Their current roster is so high quality that most of the guys who would be upgrades are costing at least a 1st to get, and those 1sts represent a real opportunity cost.

If Grant leaves, or Jaylen says he's not re-signing, or Rob's knee is done, they're going to need to spend 1-2 picks to bring somebody in. Committing the 2025 or 2026 pick this year (along with the protections you'd put on it) make it really hard to make that move if/when it becomes necessary.

I'm all for spending Wyc's money, but I don't see the move right now, absent a serious injury.

Thanks @mauf

How do we pay for Bamba? What do we give up?
Since I was the one suggesting it, my thought was that because Mo Bamba is signed to two years (this year and next's), giving up Gallinari, Pritchard, and a first round pick might make it palatable. . I think the salary is close enough, although the question is if Orlando really need Pritchard...

Bamba cannot be traded till January 15th, though.

No way I give a 1st for Bamba when the opportunity cost is not adding the next White/Brogdon/whatever in the future. Which it is.

It depends on what 'whatever' really is, since I think you trade the first for someone who lasts MORE than 1 year, which Bamba would. I wouldn't for Poeltl, but Bamba is signed through 2024, which -might- be worth considering.

Certainly wouldn't give it up for Cam Reddish (The Knicks apparently are willing to move him, either separately or with Evan Fournier.)

I'd prefer Wendell Carter Jr., but I can't see Orlando willing to move him.

Fair enough. I believe benhogan's suggestion for wings that could play up as smallball centers were Vanderbilt and PJ Washington (I'd prefer Vanderbilt in that regard.)

Agreed on Vanderbilt. Like Poeltl too, depending on the price. Would love if Brad has something else in his bag.

Agree 100% with acquiring quality players on multi-year deals. I just don't think Bamba is that player, or close to it.

That's fine. You wait until the right guy is available.

+1. This sums it up nicely

After Hauser, Luke has been the biggest eye-opener. Brad was effusive in regard to Luke this summer. I just assumed it was happy talk. Figured they got sidetracked with the IME debacle and would finish off the roster in Jan/Feb. But not much needs to be done unless TL or Al breaks before the trade deadline

I still wouldn't be shocked to see Brad move Gallo + assets for usable depth. Brad is doing everything with an eye toward continuity over the next 3 seasons. As cold-hearted as this sounds there is no reason to have DG on the roster now or next season. Some have raised concerns about moving Gallo, PR hit, but don't think mercenary/ring-chasers care one whit.

Other top teams (GSW, MIL, PHX, NOLA, GRIZZ) with assets, have greater needs than Boston so Poeltl, Bamba, Vanderbilt, Oubre etc will be well bid.

At the end of the day, Brad will probably just be opportunistic in the buyout market.

If I were in Brad's shoes, I would be waiting until I see what the 2023 version of TImeLord looks like. Is he the guy who was arguably the 3rd best player on the Celtics, 2nd-Team All Defense, or is he the guy we saw in the playoffs who was limited in his minutes and in what he could do. Because the answer to that question would be what would drive my mission to add to this team.

Agreed. A lot hinges on PTL. Without Rob, they are probably the best team in the NBA by a hair. A healthy Rob makes this team a force that the NBA media/rest of the league isn't ready for

Signing Horford on the cheap for 2 more seasons hedged out some PTL-risk. They can comfortably pencil in Horford for 24mpg over the next 2 seasons.

Considering how late in the first round Rob was taken, as well as other centers who are playing significant roles being taken late in the first or taken in the second round, you could probably wait to see how the draft shakes out before making a swap for a big man too, if you haven't already grabbed some sort of ready-to-go college big.

Rob is back within 10-12 days, we'd have about... 1 1/2 month to evaluate before the trade deadline on Feb 9th before we know which cavalry we need, and when we'd need to call them.

The challenge is, I think drafting a big man is a real crapshoot. Yes, you can get Nikola Jokic in the 2nd round and you can get Bam Adebayo with the 15th pick in the draft, but so many, many of these guys don't pan out. I mean, all positions are still pretty much a crapshoot, but I feel like the variance in BIGS seems even bigger (yuck, yuck).

This is where I think the team will be as well, and probably where they should be.

If/when healthy, they have a proven 8 man rotation that can play both ends of the floor in the playoffs.

I think they have a 9th in Hauser, that can at least play 4-6 minutes each half just to give Tatum/Brown a tiny bit of rest to not have to play the full 24 in a half.

Having Pritchard, Kornet, Blake and I guess maybe a small chance Gallo can play late this year, should be enough depth to get them through an injury or two.

Ownership has stepped up this season. I don't think they should have to spend more money/assets on this roster. They're complete.

Unless some incredible sweetheart deal comes up, I think they're done outside of a buyout that might provide better emergency depth than Vonleh/Jackson.

I think they're going to need any picks they'd theoretically trade going forward to have guys on cheap rookie deals to fill out their future rosters.

We should keep this open for the good Karma, but maybe we dont need the Cavalry.

Apologies for the digression, but never having heard of Col. Puller, I just read his (lengthy) wikipedia entry. I highly recommend it. His experience is one thing, but this addendum really jumped out:

Puller's son, Lewis Burwell Puller, Jr. (generally known as Lewis Puller), served as a Marine lieutenant in the Vietnam War. While serving with 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines (2/1), Lewis Jr. was severely wounded by a mine explosion, losing both legs and parts of his hands. Lieutenant General Puller broke down sobbing at seeing his son for the first time in the hospital.[30] Lewis Jr. won a 1992 Pulitzer Prize for his autobiography, Fortunate Son: The Healing of a Vietnam Vet. He committed suicide in 1994.[31]
Puller was father-in-law to Colonel William H. Dabney, USMC (retired), a Virginia Military Institute (VMI) graduate, who was the commanding officer (then Captain) of two heavily reinforced rifle companies of the 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines (3/26) from January 21 to April 14, 1968, in Vietnam. During the entire period, Dabney's force stubbornly defended Hill 881 South, a regional outpost vital to the defense of the Khe Sanh Combat Base during the 77-day siege at the Battle of Khe Sanh. Dabney was recommended for the Navy Cross for his actions on Hill 881 South, but his battalion executive officer's helicopter carrying the recommendation papers crashed and the papers were lost. It was not until April 15, 2005 that Colonel Dabney received the Navy Cross during an award ceremony at Virginia Military Institute.
Puller was a distant cousin to U.S. Army General George S. Patton.[32]

I’m a yes on Mo Bamba, who trained with Tatum when he started his NBA career. The entire time he was in Orlando has been a shit show, and I think with the right structure she could be a really good bench big and a good alternative if Robert Williams continues to have injury issues. The culture and structure of the Boston system would really help this guy.

Are you a yes if he costs a 1st? I'd acquire him for dreck if Orlando wanted to just get rid of him, but a 1st can get you a starting-tier guy of White/Brogdon caliber, and Bamba isn't that.

There is a Bamba sulk factor in play with Bol Bol getting starts

Gallo/NV/JJ gets it done $$$ wise...That offers future salary relief to Orlando if it gets toxic with Bamba. I would toss in PP if need be.

Even Moritz Wagner has been getting starts recently. MB minutes are down significantly, so he might be a salary dump candidate. Boston has a recent history of doing salary relief deals with Orlando, and they have worked out well for them. No doubt Bamba has shot-blocking prowess, can shoot, and could be seen as PTL injury insurance.

The fly in the ointment is I'm not sure Bamba profiles as a "Brad guy". Over 4 seasons Bamba has been a large, consistent negative +/- and ON/OFF.
FWIW consistently positive +/- (ON/OFF) over a few seasons seem to be the players' Brad aggressively goes after

I might even pull back on PP and strictly see MB as future salary relief for ORL

I don't get the Bamba idea. A guy who is sulking in ORL because he only gets 20 MPG and wants more to get his next contract is going to be happy coming to BOS to compete with Luke Kornet for scraps when TL is back? Also.... he's not good?
I mean, I don't see him as much if any upgrade to Kornet, they grade out about the same by most metrics (including DARKO) and his age doesn't make a difference because you aren't going to re-sign him likely.
I'd also note, that I don't see why ORL trades him here unless we overpay with a 1st, our only bench guy we'd trade that anyone might possibly want is PP and ORL has roughly 30 young PGs including 3 they spent real assets on who were drafted in the 1st within the last 3 years.

I don't think we trade for a name big. If we do it's probably Poetl, only guy clearly available at a price we can pay who is good enough to clearly upgrade the potential playoff rotation.
If we're adding a Kornet Kompetitor, via trade or buyout, I think someone like Plumlee is more likely.

Bamba, at this stage of his career, is exactly the type of guy you don’t want to add to a contending team. He’s a young, low-IQ player who we don’t even know if he’s actually good at basketball much less good at contributing to winning basketball. Hard pass and I’ve always been a fan of his upside.

How realistic is getting a depth shooter/scorer like Kuzma? I know the math works at 13M but do the Celts have the right assets to make that happen?

Kuzma is probably on the move

https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/269801/Rising-Belief-That-Wizards-Will-Trade-Kyle-Kuzma

Kuzma's consistent negative ON/OFF and +/- over his career isn't what Brad has shopped for recently (Al, Brogdon, White). Parity in the NBA will lead to plenty of buyers for Kuzma. I imagine his 22ppg will make him pricey and get the Wizards a 1st.

My Fake Trade guess, if Brad wants a bench shooter/scorer, is Alec Burks ($10M) who has been trending well over the last few seasons (and is Tatum's buddy).

Kuzma isn’t really a good shooter. He’s a scorer/playmaker who needs the ball in his hands to be effective. He’s never been much of a defender either even when with LeBron which is a red flag. Not a good fit here at all imo.

That is definitely his best role as most second units lack shot creators but we don’t have that issue since we stagger Jayson and Jaylen……and even when we don’t we’ve got plenty with Brogdon, White, etc.

It's going to be hard for PBS to find upgrades while not disturbing team chemistry. Which is a great problem.
Brad will still scour, but only expecting a buy-out BIG in Feb (unless hit by injuries)

While re-rebuilding, it wouldn't shock me if Danny or Pritchard (owns three '23 1sts) added Kuzma with one of their late firsts. A scorer like Kyle will draw plenty of interest. The Nets, Knicks, NOLA, Clipper, Grizz, Suns, and Kings also own a '23 first to pry him.

Expect Brad to remain opportunistic instead of wading into a competitive bidding situation.

He has really found a lane for himself as bench scoring kinda big guy and stopped trying to be a jack of all trades. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but it's a good niche to be in. Normally that guy would be a good add here, since we'd be so desperate for the scoring that we'd deal with the garbage D.

This is where I'm at for a bunch of reasons, first and foremost being the Celtics look like they have their 9 man playoff rotation set.

If they were to trade for someone, they'd have to be a better big than Grant, a better guard than Brogdon, or a better wing than Hauser. That seems really unlikely.

They even have some insurance for injury with Pritchard, and to a lesser extent Kornet.

Even if they wanted to make a trade, they don't have much to trade at the deadline. They wouldn't be able to trade a first until 2025 before this years draft, and I don't think Pritchard or Begarin are needle movers in trade value. Their best asset is probably the 2nd rounder they have coming this year that could be Houstons.

Also would be very hard for Celtics to take on anyone making decent salary. It's tough to make 3 or 4 for 1 deals in season with roster limits, and even if they could I'd imagine they'd need to be dealing for a real impact player for Wyc to add even more to this seasons luxury tax bill.

I'd agree unless they are hit with a season ending injury before the deadline, they'd just be scouring for depth in the buyout or cheap salaried guy market.

I'd probably be more looking for a defense first wing over a big.

Gallo is still the most likely addition. He has chosen to rehab in Boston and travels with the team. His original return estimate was March to June and he is clearly motivated. I have not heard any recent updates though.

It's encouraging to see his occasional updates (and that he's with the team), but I'll be shocked if we see him at all this year. He's 34 with an injury history, and the finals will be approximately 9 months after his ACL tear, an injury that usually takes 12+ months to recover from. If he's somehow available and 90% healthy by the time the playoffs start he's undoubtedly the best addition we could get (and he provides things that Hauser doesn't, even if the latter snaps out of his current funk), I just can't see it happening.

Kyle Kuzma has started every game for the Wizards and has played 200 minutes more than the next guy on the team. Where is this bench scorer moniker coming from?

Um...he'd be a bench scorer if he were here. And probably most places that would consider trading value for him would want him as a bench scorer. It's not like Detroit or San Antonio are ringing the phones off the hook to add a one dimensional guy with a year left on his deal.
