Game 4 (7pm) and Game 6 (9:30) of 2008 Finals

NBA Together presents Games 4 and 6 of the 2008 NBA Finals on ESPN. In this chapter of the NBA's most historic rivalry, the Celtics captured their record 17th championship, led by series MVP Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.

Game 4 was, obviously, one of the great viewing experiences of my life. In checking the pbp, I was pretty surprised to see that the lead was 20 halfway through the 3rd. I remembered that the lead had basically been erased by the end of the quarter, but damn that was an 18 point swing in 6 minutes, and the whole 4th was basically a dogfight within one or two possessions the whole way. How many massive comebacks have we all seen fall just short because a team expends so much energy just trying to get back in the game? It's crazy that they won this game, on the road no less. For all intents and purposes, Ray Allen ended that series when he blew by Sacha.

I distinctly remember even after losing Game 5 feeling supremely confident, especially after they nearly pulled that one out too in what basically amounted to a schedule loss, on the road after the massive comeback win and knowing they'd have two chances to close it out in Boston.

Yeah. I’m always more pessimistic in the moment after playoff losses but even I felt like LA was going to get stomped in Game 6. Kobe got them off to a good start but that 2008 Celtics squad was simply too good. They weren’t going to be denied.

Rough start so far! Two quick ones on KG...

Odom should have been such a better player.

RayRay was the bomb that game. Played the whole game, 9 boards. Good defense 2nd half.

Pierce had such a knack for the dramatic. This game was great, but that Nets comeback will never be topped for me.

Such a treat to be able to watch KG again. I forgot how well Posey fit with that team, but he clearly played a huge part in the series.

Leon Powe! Loved that dude. Caused my favorite Phil Jackson sound bite of all time when he pathetically pretended to not know how it was pronounced

Posey
3 and D before it was cool

And he did so much more, especially on the boards

I forgot what a joy it was to watch this team defensively and pass the ball. Just beautiful.

I was fortunate enough to be in the Garden for Game 6, and aside from the replays/highlights that were on tv in the immediate aftermath, this is the first time I've seen the game on TV since.

On that night, I remember the combination of pregame drinking due to nerves and excitement giving way to celebratory drinking as the lead grew, which combined to leave me remembering almost nothing of the second half besides the fact that I screamed Leon Powe's name a hell of a lot, celebrated in the streets around the Garden, partied in the North End, and eventually stumbled our way drunkenly to a friend's apartment in Allston.

This is a joy to watch, and I'm trying to limit my Covid stress drinking to prevent history from repeating itself.

Celtics were 44-12 after last game KG played in 2009 and at one point were 27-2. That was a really good team. 2010 squad obviously came within a couple of plays from winning it all. 2012 team was a home game away from another NBA Finals. Big 3 definitely should have definitely won another title. My only regret from that era.
