Plenty to keep an eye on tonight as it relates to the Tankathon and C's playoff seeding:

C's Playoff Watch:
CHA@TOR. Hornets sit a 1/2 game behind BOS, need them to lose.
DET@MIA. Same situation as above for MIA.
Tankathon/Playoffs:
PHO@ATL. Can Phoenix pull off a miracle and help both causes? A win would put the C's alone in 3rd and move the Suns a 1/2 game closer to BKL in the standings.
Mavs Pick:
CHI@MEM. Memphis needs to get back on track, sitting just 2 up on DAL after losing 6 in a row.
SAS@UTA. Maybe Pop rests the starters? Need a Utah win to pass Dallas in the standings.
POR@SAC. A Blazers win would put them 2 up on Dallas

BKL, DAL and BOS have the night off.

Suns have been goddamn atrocious in the second half and especially the 4th, but the refs really killed any chance they had.

Harden played like a dog twice against Brooklyn and he's doing it again tonight.

Only a little better than Howard, who I wouldn't take on the Celtics for free.

Harden pukes all over himself down the stretch of another game. You suck, James.

It's hard to believe this Rockets team is in the same league as the Warriors. It doesn't even look like they play the same sport. Every play is Harden and his dead eyes holding the ball for 20 seconds while everyone stands around watching him either hit a contested jumper, draw a foul, or throw it away. And that's actually by far their best chance of scoring. It's stunning how few open shots that team gets because they do everything in slow-motion. Dallas is certainly no great shakes but if they win for one reason and one reason only it's that they move the ball around a ton and get open shots for their marginal talent with some really simple stuff; pick-drive-kick-pass-pass-shoot. Meanwhile Houston is like pick-oopsHardenwaitedtoolongandisnowdoubledwhatdowedo. I mean, fuck.

Somewhere
Lose. Puts them in position to miss playoffs and give the C's a lotto pick from last year's Rondo trade.
If the Mavericks win the lottery, the pick just rolls over to next year. Not the worst thing in the world, but it's not really a major positive. Best possible outcome is the #8.

I don't know. Since this seems to be a weak draft, maybe pushing it to next year is a better option. It's not as if the C's are hurting for picks this year.

Portland is at 43-37 and in the Playoffs (Houston at 38-40). Plays Minnesota and Denver (both home), so should easily move ahead of Memphis (42-36, Dallas, Warriors twice, Clips, OUCH!) into No.5 in the West.

What's annoying is the double punch of the fact that the Suns should be pushing Dallas out of the playoffs, not the Nets out of the third spot in the lottery.

Well, they're 2 games up for the playoffs with 4 to play, so it seems pretty safe that we're going to get the pick this season--somewhere in the 12-16 range.

Weird season in the West. Any other year and Dallas wouldn't even be sniffing a playoff spot. Houston has blown double digit winnable games. Phoenix and New Orleans' seasons were born under a bad sign.

Definitely rooting for Phoenix tonight. I think Dallas could easily lose 2 games but the idea of Houston winning their last 4 under pressure--regardless of opponent--feels preposterous. I'd be shocked if they don't lose to either or both of Minnesota and Sacramento. The chance at that 3 slot going into the lotto is much more important anyway.

Dallas has Memphis, at Utah, at Clippers, and SA. Jazz game will be huge. 1-3 is definitely in play, I'd say 0-4 but we know what will happen with SA in the last game.

The only reason I'd want Howard on my team is if I HAD to have either him or harden. The only good the latter has brought to the entirety of the sport is inspiring my dreams of KG "mentoring" him.

Yeah, what a terrible fate it would be for the C's to have an elite scorer/playmaker.

O to be cursed with a guy who can get any shot he wants, anytime, anywhere.

Actually, Isaiah Thomas keeps climbing closer to elite status in both categories -- but the Celtics still need another creator. I think the Team+Stevens defensive intensity and commitment is strong enough to absorb and improve the defense even of noted slackers Harden and Okafor.

Give us your lazy, your vacant, your no-conscience gunners yearning to shoot free, the wretched refuse of your failed rebuilding plan

Except I don't believe you can hide someone through team defense who simply doesn't care/try at that end. And I don't mean he's bad at it, that you can work with, I mean well below minimal effort.

I'd also argue he's a one man less than the sum of its parts machine at the end he is good at. Granted he is unworldly talented at that end.

I think bad defense in spite of excellent tools can be affected positively by a new team with an emphasis on defense and a good coach who puts. Put another way, Harden's defensive deficiencies may be situation- and team-specific. Is he an uncoachable prima donna? I'd like to see Stevens give a try at showing otherwise.

Also, I think there is something valuable in esprit de corps, and the Celtics have it.

Harden just fouled a guy 90 feet from the basket in the bonus. Two possession game now.

Phoenix has three winnable games after this if LAC rests on the last day. Would be amazing to land the 3 spot in the end.

So should I root for the Celtics to end up 3rd or 6th in the East? The Venn diagrams are getting a little complicated,

3rd, because I think this team deserves a home series.

Looks like DAL got hot at the wrong time for the Celtics, but obviously we'll take that PHX loss. Now for the Nets not to fuck it up with a random win.

Gotta really hope DAL doesn't jump anyone else too, it would be annoying if they won a playoff series and that pick ended in the 20s. Obviously anything can happen, but I don't see them having much chance against GSW or SAS so the 7th or 8th seed is preferred.

Draft pick order is strictly determined by record for non-lottery teams. Even if they make the WCF as a #7 seed it would still be the 16th pick going to Boston.

I'll always remember this quirk of the NBA after the Celtics made the finals and still drafted 19th. In fact I believe that was my first thought because it was better than thinking about the loss. Made a big difference too--landed Bradley instead of, well, pretty much anybody else who was drafted after him.

Thanks for the correction, I often forget which quirk goes into which big 4 draft.

Dammit, I forgot the Grizzlies had no Gasol, no Conley. Fucking Mavs. Real impressive beating Jordan Farmar and Chris Anderson.

Phoenix leads New Orleans by 18 after three quarters. Keep those Suns shining for two more games!
