Checking in from our trailer outside the convention center.

Can somebody go check out the new Sony Walkman and report back how it's worth $1,200 money?

I'm planning on getting some hands-on time with this at some point, so I'll let you know what I think.

I'm at CES this week, as I know other SoShers are. I'll try to report back if I see anything cool.

My buddy is there with Formlabs. I asked him to keep a running count of trilbies and fedoras.

It's for "audiophiles".  These are the same people who will spend thousands on a single speaker.  More power to you if you can discern a difference but some people either really can or claim they can and the extra money is worth it to them.

I'm here. Wearables and connected home as far as the eye can see.

This was my favorite moment of the day. Laser tooth whitening from some random booth with questionable hygiene practices? Why not!

My favorite item I've heard about so far? The internet-connected device that allows you to water your plants via your phone.

There are multiple versions of this must have, life changing innovation.

The receptor analyzes the chemical components of your urine, transmits the results over the internet to the waterer that reconstructs it, then dilutes with water by the proper amount before gently misting your plants.

I think Edyn is pretty cool, actually.  Most people can't afford a horticulturist and don't have the time to do all the research and sampling themselves, and people often plant the wrong things in the wrong place.

If it works as well as the CNET video review I found implies, this would be really cool to have.

At $100 each how much better would the yield from your garden need to be to break even?  It's really cool but it needs to be $25.

I think it's a bit myopic to look at the cost-benefit of a thing like Edyn in that way. A lot of people just enjoy having a nice looking garden, and a one-time fee of 100 bucks might be worth it if they enjoy their hobby a little bit more for years to come. I mean, I appreciate your approach, but I think there's value in a product like this beyond that line of thinking.

Yeah, that's a good point.  I was really focused on a vegetable garden and that is indeed myopic.  People who pay hundreds for plants and spend countless hours on flower beds and such probably look at $100 for that level of knowledge as totally worth it.

as a tech journalist covering this stuff I'm basically always asking myself, "what will my mom think of this?"

Good idea, because your dad is a cynical bastard who will only see the downside.

Actually, CES is far more like a SoSH bash than a Brooklyn hipster party. He'd be better off counting neck beards. Every kid in your high school's AV club is here.

Mostly in line at the Sbarro stand.
