Didn't make sense to me that they would but I am very casual about non-Seminole NCAAF
I mean most coaches in year four who've gone 4-8, 5-7, 3-5 and 3-9 (likely) don't get a fifth year but Nebraska seems to have accepted their role in the football world.

I thought his team played a lot better this year than I have seen in a while. He had good success at UCF and he is a great former player. Seems like he should be given a lot of rope.

BC's starting QB came back from injury and played.
Yup, and face it wasn't VT playing the 4th string QB? the coach may deserve to be fire, if for no other reason they have no depth at the QB position. But that poor kid VT had out there at QB was completely overmatched, and had no chance at this level

nope
would have been 7.5 on 12/5. they split the difference.
almost like there's a reason they wanted to do it now instead of 12/5. hmm. wonder why that could be.
Gotcha. I must have been reading an early report.

Butch Davis is gone from FIU after the season.

FIU Head Coach Butch Davis Will Not Return to Panthers Next Year (actionnetwork.com)

For those that complain about schools treating football as way more important than they should, I give you FIU:

Davis said he was allowed to only offer one-year contracts to assistants, hampering his ability to hire coaches who could get multi-year deals elsewhere.
When Davis arrived in 2017, he found out all the shoulder pads were at least 10 years old. The school wouldn’t provide the money to purchase new shoulder pads, but an assistant coach had a contact at Mississippi State. The Bulldogs’ program had shoulder pads that were five years old, but they were replacing them, so Mississippi State gave FIU its shoulder pads at no cost.

“They were five years old,” Davis said. “But they were new to us.”
In today’s college football world, where some schools get new uniform combos literally every game, FIU is using uniforms that are nine years old, Davis said.
Davis also said his coaching staff was not allowed to go on the road recruiting the past two years because of the school’s financial reasons and COVID-19.

I thought UMass was the worst opening in FBS, but after seeing this FIU is a strong contender.
I wondered why FAU got invited to move up to the AAC and FIU did not, didn't even get a nod for the Sun Belt, which is most likely a better place than CUSA is right now.

VaTech seems to me like an underrated job. A coach won't get the same monster contract that blue bloods like LSU or USC are about to give but you also don't get the ridiculous National Championship or bust expectations. From the early ninties through like 2010-ish VaTech has a lot of success within their conference so there is some recent-ish winning tradition. The stadium is great, passionate fan base, some hunting around ACC atheletic budgets points to their spending being near the top of conference year in/year out and this spring they announced a $30m facilities upgrade. It's a little remote but has access to some fertile recruiting ground in VA and NC (4hr drive from DC or the Tidewater region. 3hr drive from Charlotte). None of the other programs in the ACC Costal division are consistently good year-to-year and there will be years where they could avoid Clemson or a future-rejuvenated Florida State en route to the ACC Championship game.

It's a rebuild for sure, but I would think that a lot of coaches would be lining up for the Va Tech job. It checks a lot of boxes and gives you a path to compete for conference championships.

The chances that someone takes over that program and builds it up to a powerhouse like Dabo did at Clemson is very, very slim. But I'd think Virginia Tech profiles as the type of program that at least gives the right coach some type of chance to accomplish that feat

There was a story recently in The Athletic, where they talked to HS coaches in Virginia, and granted them anonymity, for honest thoughts about the state's programs in regards to recruiting. Many said that Tech (and UVA) had really fallen off recruiting the hotbed area of Hampton Roads. They go try to compete with SEC schools for 3 and 4 star kids in Texas when there's a bevy of them in-state.

Virginia high school coaches sound off: Hokies' recruiting in Texas, UVa's approach, Ricky Rahne on the rise and more – The Athletic

Coach 3: It bothers me. I mean, let’s look at the schools they’ve lost to, last year and this year. How many times did Virginia kids stick it to them? They lost to Wake Forest last year. Nick Andersen had how many picks against Virginia Tech? How about you win the state of Virginia, buddy?

Coach 4: I’ll be honest with you: There’s a lot of good players in Virginia. You’ve got to go all the way to Texas to get a damn three-star? I don’t think so. And players win games, there’s no doubt about that. But still, your job as a coach at any level is to cultivate and develop a culture and develop your players. And I think there’s some damn good players in Virginia.

From Pat Forde:

On his way to unemployment, Davis nuked the administration this week, including a claim that the football program is underfunded. Then sports journalist Alex Kirshner dug up this handy information showing that FIU had a higher total operating expenditure on football than anyone else in Conference USA in 2019-20.

Really thought Mullen was going to lead them back to prominence. Stoops would be great as long as he didn’t touch the defense. How much of a long shot is that though?
Mullen couldn’t make aloof and quirky work, hired a crappy staff, and was getting crushed on the recruiting trail. Oh, and he got caught cheating. He sniffed the NFL hard last year and didn’t get a sniff back. He can avoid recruiting and go work for Urban in JAX.

The Bull Gator chatter is Stoops has been approached about interest recently (before yesterday) and didn’t say no. He knows defense and coached it well as Spurrier‘s DC, but defense became optional in the Big 12.

Hugh Freeze maybe? Knows the southeast
Actually he would be good for VT too but maybe too close for comfort
Hugh Freeze leveraged a cameo in The Blind Side into a major college coaching gig. He promptly imploded in a blizzard of cheating charges and escort services.

Why on earth would anyone hire him?

Totally forgot about the baggage, but I’m not going to mark him down when Bama and LSU is in the same division.

Very excited that Don Brown is coming back to UMass to revive the program. I'm shocked he'd even want the job at this point in his career.

Brown did a phenomenal job at Michigan with one exception - Ryan Day managed to decode and exploit his system for Ohio State and Brown was unable to adjust. It may be the only black mark on his record and he probably looks at the head coaching position at UMass as a way to finish his career on a high note without fear that a similar offensive mastermind will replicate Day's feat.

With the Florida job now open, with LSU/USC and others, the middle tier schools with openings had better jump quickly for guys like Napier. Going to be more decent job openings than coaches who should be there.

Brown recruited New England pretty well for Michigan. Has there been a fall off since he left (only one season, I know, but curious if the pipeline has slowed down).

Given the uniqueness of the last 18 months with Covid, it's hard to say. But I would expect their recruitment efforts to geographically refocus in areas where the current coaching staff has strength.
