How many minutes would have made it OK for him to take another job?

It's easy to just say they're all sociopaths -- although Kelly probably does qualify -- but this is a system problem.

If this is aimed at me, I’d point out that my comment was refuting the defense of Kelly.

I don’t give a shit about “class” and these coaches are free to do whatever they want. However, that freedom comes with the burden of being responsible for their actions. And their actions are pretty definitive proof that they are (and have always been) sociopathic assholes.

Edit: it’s worth noting that until recently, every college coach lined up to create barriers for athletes who wanted to transfer. And their argument was always about “loyalty to the program” or some such bullshit. And now these assholes can’t even be bothered to finish out their seasons before grabbing tens of millions of dollars while leaving their programs in shambles behind them. The idea that anyone would defend this kind of ethical bankruptcy is ridiculous.
Is this is aimed at me, it’s misdirected. I’m not defending, and don’t even particularly like Kelly, just pointing out that singling him out for scorn is ridiculous. The entire system invites this kind of thing, and other coaches have, and will continue to bail on their teams early in this fashion. He’s not unique. And disliking him for other reasons doesn’t change that. Couldn’t agree more about how distasteful the whole business can be, and how fair, and long past due, it is that at least players can now move more freely through the transfer portal.

This is fair. Apologies for misunderstanding your post.

Texts the team at 10:08 last night telling them he's leaving and says he'll explain more at a 7 am meeting today, then is done in 11 minutes.

I don't know. It just seems you could give the students who got you almost $100 million more of your time, but yeah, you're both probably right. It just feels jarring when you see the times.

Many people are predisposed to think Kelly is a dick simply because he coaches (coached) Notre Dame. But seriously, are some of you guys thinking he ought to have a set of PowerPoint slides and drag the meeting out for an hour and a half? I strongly suspect he could say everything that should be said in 11 minutes.

(If like AR you think Kelly is worse than a dick because of the death connected to him, that's different.)

People keep talking about this 7:00 a.m. meeting as if it was solely for this, but reading the statement from Kelly, I feel like the team was meeting at 7:00 a.m. and he was telling them he would be there to talk to them in person, not that he told them they had to be there out of the blue.

FTR, I still don't care about Brian Kelly and think he will be a miserable failure at LSU.

Kelly has one of the most impressive resumes I have ever seen given where he came from. Maybe I’m a sucker for Massholes but I don’t see why he should fail.

You know what's better than a short awkward meeting? A long, drawn-out awkward meeting!

Didn’t see this mentioned upthread, but last week Wake Forest’s outstanding head coach Dave Clawson signed a rich multi-year extension.

Which means he’ll probably be there for one more year, but as the board’s resident Wake fan I’m delighted to have that. Was terrified he’d jump to Duke, knowing Cutcliffe is done.

And the board's BC fans would give up a toe to have this same post apply to Jeff Hafley next November.

The thought was before Kelly left is that Marcus Freeman was going to be the next coach at Duke.

I don't think coaches move in-conference that much, not sure they ever did.

Lifelong Wake fan - and Alum - here too! I never thought he’d go to Duke but have been worried another larger program like Virginia Tech may go after him. Guess they don’t have the patience to allow him to build a program that Wake does?

Money talks....
How much money will it take, though? Notre Dame outbid LSU for Freeman literally last year, so surely there's a buyout in his contract. Is LSU gonna pay the buyout and make him the highest paid coordinator? Will they do the same for Reese? Are they going to be paying Kelly $15 mil, each coordinator, what, $3-4 mil plus buyouts? I know they're rich, but that that's a ton for 3 coaches.

My guess is that S&R was talking about the ability to recruit top athletes without worrying whether the admissions department would allow them to enroll.

In terms of the schedule, you are unquestionably correct.
Yes, this is exactly what I was alluding to. Kelly always had to consider the academic implications of players getting into ND, and at LSU, this obviously won't be an issue.

My favorite part is that the guy sat on that pic for 8 years for fear it would embarrass Kelly and harm the football program.

Kelly met for double the time Riley did. Coaches are opportunist jerks, news at 11.
Rich Rod may have had the shortest, not by his own choice. After spending the week in Ohio interviewing with Michigan before choking away the Pitt game to play for the NC, came into a meeting with the players to give a speech. Before he started, a DL said are you leaving, Rod started hemming and hawing, DL got up and said are you leaving. Rod mumbled yes and the DL said get the f out. End of speech

I knew some guys in that meeting and it was as tense as it gets. Not only did he skip town after the 13-9 game, he was all but gone the year before to Alabama before backing out at the last second.2007 really rocked the college football landscape and we’re still seeing the fallout today.

And different sport but I would pay a lot of money to hear a tape of the conversation in which Bill Frieder told AD Bo Schebmechler that he was leaving for ASU but would definitely coach Michigan for whatever games they might last in the NCAA tournament. Which of course turned out to be six.

Some noise OU will announce its new coach at its basketball game tonight. The airplane followers think it's Rhule but I seriously doubt that's happening.

Not as flashy as Fickell or Campbell but an in-house hire means they should know what they are getting.
Supposed to an outstanding recruiter as well. ND is a daunting place for your first HC job, but I like this a lot. Will live with some growing pains, because I think the guy is going to be a top HC ultimately. Also glad they’ll have as much continuity as possible for whatever their post season game ends up being.

The biggest comedy scenario just became ND winning the Natty w/o BK
