I'm surprised the MAC only has its final on national tv. I thought it was a more prestigious conference than that

Yeah, I'm not sure what's up with that. But their web site doesn't even mention anything about online streaming, which is pretty ridiculous.

Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)
All games at Toyota Center, Houston TX ... All times EDT

As noted upthread, this promises to be the most fucked-up conference tournament in NCAA basketball history. Four of the SWAC's 10 schools were penalized this season for NCAA Academic Progress Rate violations. Southern University (1st place), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (4th), Mississippi Valley State (9th) and Grambling State (10th) were all ruled ineligible for postseason play. However, earlier this month the SWAC applied for and was granted an NCAA exemption that allows all 10 of the conference's teams to participate in the postseason tournament (presumably due to attendance concerns and other jeopardized tournament commitments). However, none of the four penalized teams will be eligible for the conference championship, and they will remain ineligible for further postseason participation, including the NCAA Tournament, NIT, CIT and CBI.

Among the six eligible schools, the team that advances furthest in the SWAC tournament will be awarded the conference championship and the automatic NCAA bid. If two teams are tied for furthest level of advancement (such as both losing in the semifinals to ineligible teams), the championship and automatic NCAA bid will go to the higher seed. So if an eligible team play an ineligible team in the title game, the eligible team will already know it's heading to the NCAA tournament no matter what, meaning their coach can do whatever he wants to rest players, and their fans will be able to trash talk the opposition for hours without any fear of jinxing the outcome. Sure, they might get their asses kicked or be shot in the face, but at least their hoop team will get a trip to Dayton out of the deal.

Should two ineligible teams advance to the championship game, ESPN2 will air a two-hour montage of its network anchors being violently molested by veteran NFL defensive linemen.

It's also worth noting that 6th place Alcorn State was also penalized this season for APR violations. However, because they were deemed Level One offenses, the school remains eligible for all postseason play. So if you're scoring at home, half the conference isn't cutting the mustard in the classroom, even by the NCAA's paltry standards. Yay college!!

Classy UVM coach John Becker tonight after the game. He didn't even want to do a presses after the game and had to be told to go. Then, he decides to go all sour grapes and blame the tourney venue and the officiating for the loss. He ended it with saying that they(or he) isn't even looking forward to playing in the NIT.

What an ass. Maybe he should try coaching in the SWAC.

Can we get a referendum going up there to bring Tom Brennan back?

He was his arrogant, self-serving usual on the radio last week. Was saying there's no way UVM loses until the NCAAs. That guy was the worst coach in America until 2 kids fell in his lap. I can't and have never been able to stand him after the way he treated VT high school coaches.

COLONIAL - #3 William & Mary upset #2 Towson, 75-71, largely behind 11-of-22 shooting on threes. Marcus Thornton scored 21 and made 3 steals, one of them with 5 seconds left while the Tigers were working for the game-tying shot. He was fouled and sank a pair from the line to ice it. Thornton had also scored W&M's previous points, hitting a jumper with 2:24 left to put them up 73-30. Brandon Britt hit 4 of 6 from deep for the Tribe, who get #1 Delaware in the title game.

HORIZON - #5 Milwaukee upset top seed Green Bay, 73-66 in OT. The Panthers led at halftime 28-19, but the favored Phoenix stormed back with an 18-7 run to start the 2nd. Milwaukee trailed by 4 with :57 left, but Aaron Jordan hit a pair from the line, and then scored on a layup to tie it with :15 on the clock. Kyle Kelm blocked a jumper by UWGB's Grey Mays to save the game. In the extra session, Green Bay hit on just 1 of 8 shots (a Mays dunk was the only make). Jordan scored 28 while Matt Tiby and Steve McWhorter each grabbed 10 boards for the Panthers, who meet #3 Wright St for the championship.

MAAC - #1 Iona knocked off #4 Canisius, 75-72, behind Sean Armand's 21 pts and a dozen boards from David Laury. Guards Tre Bowman & Isaiah Williams added 16 pts apiece. The Gaels held Griffs' guard Billy Baron scoreless until the game's 9th minute. Canisius trailed by as many as 12 in the 2nd, but battled back to tie it with less than a minute to play. A Laury put-back and an Armand FT put the Gaels up 3 with :28 left, but the Griffs' Chris Manhertz dunked a Baron alley-oop to get them back within a point. Bowman was fouled and hit both his FTs with :05 on the clock, and Canisius couldn't get a final shot off. Baron ultimately led the Griffs with 23 and made some clutch steals and passes down the stretch, but he was just 2-of-9 on threes including two big misses in the final minutes.

#2 Manhattan broke away from #3 Quinnipiac after a deadlocked 40-40 first half, going up by 8 three minutes into the 2nd half and by a dozen with 12:00 to play. It was cruise control the rest of the way for the Jaspers in an 87-68 final, led by George Beaman's 25 pts & 4 steals, Emmy Andujar's 21 pts & 6 reb, and Rhamel Brown's 16 pts, 9 reb & 4 blocks. The Bobcats were led by Ike Azotam's 18 pts & 10 reb. The top two seeds will meet for the crown, while both QU (20-11) and CC (21-12) are both decent bets for the NIT, CIT and/or CBI.

SOUTHERN - Following #5 Western Carolina's upset of #1 Davidson, #3 Wofford stormed out to a 23-8 lead over #7 Georgia Southern and never looked back in a 71-57 win. All 5 Terrier starters scored in double-figures and shot 54% from the floor, and Wofford won the battles inside (39-33 reb, 5-0 blocks). Lee Skinner led the way with 15 pts, 12 reb & 5 assists. They'll meet the Catamounts for the SoCon title.

SUMMIT - It took some work but #4 Denver finally wriggled free of #5 South Dakota in a 71-55 2nd-round win. It was a 30-30 game with 3:30 left in the 1st half, but the Pioneers went into the break on an 8-2 run. They then held the Coyotes without a FG for the first 4:30 of the 2nd half. SD was still within 5 pts with 9:00 to play, but Brett Olson, who scored a game-high 20, hit a jumper and a pair of threes to lead a decisive 15-5 run. The Pioneers get top seed North Dakota St in a semifinal.

#3 S. Dakota State fared better than their intrastate rivals, dispatching #6 Western Illinois 71-50. It was just a 3-pt Jackrabbit lead at halftime, but tight D limited the Leathernecks to just two FGs (both layups) in the first 9:36 of the 2nd half, by which time SDSU led by 20 on 7-of-11 shooting including 4 of 6 on threes. They'll face #2 IPFW in the semis.

WEST COAST - The top 4 seeds all advanced in the quarters, with #2 BYU ending the dream for #10 Loyola-Marymount, 85-74, behind 23 pts, 16 reb & 3 steals by Kyle Collinsworth. The Cougars were never threatened despite being ice cold from deep (0-for-12 on threes). The'll face #3 San Francisco, 69-60 winners over #6 San Diego.

In the other half of the bracket, top seed Gonzaga escaped #9 Santa Clara by just a pair, 77-75. The Broncs were up 6 at the break, and they continued to lead until Sam Dower hit a pair of FTs to give the Zags a 66-65 edge with 3:24 to play. After the teams traded buckets, Dower forced a turnover, got fouled, and hit 2 more at the line with 1:46 on the clock. Seconds later, Dower grabbed a huge offensive board, was fouled again, and drilled both shots to put Gonzaga up 5. FWIW, Dower was 15-for-15 from the line on the way to a 23-pt night.

Still down a nickel with :33 left, Santa Clara got a huge rebound and put-back by Evan Roquemore, who was fouled on the play (by David Stockton, aka John's kid) and nailed the FT to get the Broncos to within 2. Then a critical Zags turnover by Gary Bell Jr. led to a tying Jared Brownridge jumper with :10 to play. Stockton then redeemed himself as follows:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paTcwliakYM

The Zags move on to the semis against #4 Saint Mary's, 80-69 victors over #5 Pepperdine. The Gaels trailed early 12-8, but led by 13 at the half and were never ahead by fewer than 7 thereafter. Brad Waldow led the charge with 21 pts & 8 boards.

* In the MAAC final, Iona was up 4 but the Jaspers are on an 11-0 run. Time-out Gaels with 3:44 left in the 1st. Manhattan leading 29-22.

EDIT - Iona stems the tide with a 3-pt play and another bucket, down just 3 now in the final minute.

* In the CAA final, W&M has been staying close to Delaware, tied 33-33 until the final minute of the half. The Blue Hens score the final 6 pts to take the lead at the break.

* The MAC and MEAC openers are, predictably, shaping up as blowouts. In Athens, #5 Ohio U demolishing #12 Ball St 36-20 (under 4:00 in the 1st), while MEAC #4 Norfolk St is in their own backyard and crushing #13 MD-Eastern Shore 53-33 (15:00 left in 2nd).

* Manhattan gets a basket and a pair at the line, and they lead Iona at the half 33-27.

* Holy crap, is Summit top seed NDSU laying the wood to Denver. It's 42-15 at the break. The Bison are 17-for-23 from the floor (74%), and they've already got a 16-8 rebounding margin. The Pioneers are just 6-for-20 and 0-for-6 from deep.

* MAC #8 Miami with a 33-31 lead over #9 Kent at halftime.

* MD-Eastern Shore launching quite the comeback. Down 17 at the half, they've outscored 41-28 in the 2nd, and are trailing 71-67 with just under 4:00 to play.

* Iona had forged back ahead 38-35, but Manhattan has answered with 9 unanswered. All this happening with George Beamon on the bench for the Jaspers. Just under 14:00 to play. Gaels' big man David Laury is also sitting with 3 fouls.

MD-ES has just tied Norfolk, 71-71 with 1:45 to play.

EDIT - The Spartans went back ahead on a bucket and a free throw with 6.6 left. The Hawks need to go the length of the floor for a three to keep their upset hopes alive.

EDIT - Norfolk survives, 78-74. The Hawks finish 6-26.

* Delaware grew their lead over W&M to 10 early in the 2nd, but it's down to 64-62 with 5:20 left.

EDIT - W&M takes a 67-66 lead with 4:19 left.

* Miami OH was up 12 on Kent, but it's down to 58-53 inside 6:00 to play. In other MAC games, Ohio still killing Ball St 54-36, E.Mich leads C.Mich 27-24 at the half, and N. IL up on BGU 25-17 nearing halftime.

* NDSU now leading Denver 67-30, on their way to win #24.

* Beamon & Laury both back in, but Beamon's the won getting it done. He just nailed a 3, giving him 14 pts tonight, and Manhattan goes up 64-54 on Iona with 6:14 left.

W&M just took the lead 66-65. This has been quite the second half. If they hold on not only will it be their trip to the dance, but it will be the first time I've ever seen an alma mater of mine in the tourney.

If William & Mary wins this, it'll be the first NCAA tournament appearance in their program's history. They're one of just five original Division I teams dating back to 1948-49 that have never qualified. The others are Army, Northwestern, The Citadel and St. Francis (NY).

The Tribe is up 71-68 with 1:44 left.

Refs let them play, which is good. Delaware scores, W&M timeout with about 10 seconds left.

EDIT: Yeah, it looked like a charge, but I would rather no call to be honest than something that could go either way.

Wow. W&M choked big time under the pressure. First Prewitt at the line on the front end of a one-and one, and Thornton twice. That final shot was hurried.

Iona down 2. Manhattan ball with 18.5 left.

EDIT - Iona gets it back needing a three, and they look like the keystone cops on their final possession. They get it to their power forward who's never made one from beyond the arc, and he bricks it with Manute Bol-esque form. Jaspers advance.

You do indeed recall correctly. I still remember a lot about that tournament, as UMass made the Final Four that year. Hence permanent emblazonment of minutia by the metric fuckton on my brain, and my recollection of WCU-Purdue. But I had to look up what exactly transpired:

The shot was so pure, a silk stroke launched toward history. “A good look” is how Thad Matta remembers it 15 years later. His boss at the time can still see the basketball floating on the game’s final possession. “I thought it was going in,” Phil Hopkins recalled.

Only it didn’t. The open 3-point shot by Joel Flemming ’98 hit the back of the rim and bounced long to teammate Joe Stafford ’04, who tossed up a 15-foot runner that would have forced overtime.

That shot missed, too. Game over. Purdue, a No. 1 seed, had escaped with a 73-71 victory over 16th-seeded Western Carolina in the first round of the 1996 NCAA Tournament. History still awaits someone. A No. 16 seed has never defeated a No. 1 seed.

Florida Gulf Coast is another automatic qualifier for the NIT since they shared the Atlantic Sun regular season title with Mercer.

By the way, I also forgot about Green Bay from the Horizon. So that's 7 bids so far.

You do indeed recall correctly. I still remember a lot about that tournament, as UMass made the Final Four that year. Hence permanent emblazonment of minutia by the metric fuckton on my brain, and my recollection of WCU-Purdue. But I had to look up what exactly transpired:

Yeah, I remember that game because back then I used to be in a four person pool where we'd draft 16 teams each.  With my last pick I got Western Carolina, and was excited because Purdue was widely recognized as the weakest #1 seed and I thought an upset could happen.

(What I neglect to mention is that I had the 4th and 5th picks and got stuck with Purdue).

Now the Catamounts are on a 10-2 run, and have cut Wofford's lead to 46-43 with 4:00 left.

EDIT - This game is a blast. Wofford still up 3 with :35 left. We'll see if they can hang on, as they suck from the line (67% for the season) and they're just 7 of 21 tonight.

EDIT - WCU fouls, and Wofford indeed misses -- but Skinner gets the ORB, and now he shoots. And misses the first. But makes the 2nd. Now a 2-possession game with 28.1 left.

EDIT - WCU got 2 decent looks but missed both, and Skinner grabs another huge board. Back to the line he goes with :14 left.

EDIT - Skinner misses the first, WCU sprints downcourt, and Boggs drains a three. 1-pt game with 6.3 left.

EDIT - Wofford's Karl Cochran hits both FTs, and it's back to a 3-pt lead with 5.3 left. WCU is just 3-for-17 on threes tonight, and they need one right fucking now.

EDIT - Sumler was defended well but got a good look from the right point, and it's off the back of the rim. Terriers advance to the dance for the 3rd time in 5 years.

* All 4 MAC seeds advanced. #5 Ohio's reserves allowed the lead to erode, but they still beat #12 Ball St by a dozen. #8 Miami knocked out #9 Kent, 71-64. And #6 E. Mich pulled away from #11 C. Mich 72-60.

But #7 N. Illinois was taken into OT by #10 Bowling Green after Jehvon Clarke hit a game-tying three with a second left in regulation. Those were Clarke's only points of the half after scoring 10 in the first. He also had BGU's only points in OT (a layup with 2:43 left), but lightning couldn't strike twice and he missed another tying three at the buzzer. The Falcons turned the ball over 4 times in the extra session, and the Huskies win it 54-51.

* Gonzaga about to polish off St. Mary's, up 16 in the final seconds. And that'll do it.

BYU & San Francisco are now tied 64-64 with under a minute to go. USF ball.

EDIT - A long three from the left side is no good. Two Dons go after the ball but knock it out of bounds. It'll be Cougars ball with :33.5 left after a time-out.

EDIT - Outstanding D by the Dons, preventing penetration and forcing a bad shot. USF will have the ball with somewhere between 1 and 1.5 secs left once the officials re-set the clock after the time-out call. They'll be inbounding from the sideline at about 3/4 court, so it'll have to be a Laettner-esque catch-and-shoot play.

EDIT - Well, I was way off. They'll have 0.4 seconds. And they don't even get a shot off. On to OT.

EDIT - BYU on an 8-2 run halfway through OT, but USF just added a bucket. Cougars lead 72-68, and Dons' coach Rex Walters (former Kansas sniper) calls his lone timeout.

EDIT - Glover hits a pair from the line with 1:10 left. BYU still ahead, but only by 2.

EDIT - Carlito drills one for the Cougars, but Glover answers for USF. 75-74 Cougars, 25 secs left. Kyle Colinsworth to the line for BYU.

EDIT - He sinks both. Holmes takes it straight to the hoop for a lay-in and USF sets up their press, but they have to foul.

EDIT - BYU is now perfect from the line after another pair -- 14 for 14. 15 secs left.

EDIT - Holmes scores again. Another foul, more BYU FTs coming with 8.4 secs left. And Glover fouls out for the Dons.

EDIT - Winder misses the 1st, sinks the 2nd. BYU up 2 with 8.4 left. Cougars call time-out to set up their D.

EDIT - Holmes loses his dribble on the penetration drive, but recovers to shoot a desperation three from the right corner. The tip attempt is no good, and that's it. #2 Brigham Young will meet #1 Gonzaga for the WCC title. Great game.

In the Summit, the Mastodons of Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne led #3 South Dakota State by as many as 10 in the first half, but the Jackrabbits battled back to tie it 44-44 midway through the 2nd half. #2 IPFW then went on an 8-1 run and never trailed again. A Jordan Dykstra 3 with :29 left brought SDSU to within 3, but a Pierre Bland FT with 6 secs left sealed the win for IPFW. They'll face #1 North Dakota State for the title and the NCAA bid.
