Id be shocked if he was getting any meaningful guaranteed money. He was an abject disaster last year in Philly. Just seemed like a situation where the coaching staff had seen enough the player to know it wasnt going to work, so surprised he's back.
I figure this is just a hedge against Adrian Wilson's ability to come back from injury & not suck

Fine with it as long as the numbers are low. He has familiarity with the system, is still only 26, and won't have as many coverage responsibilities with DMC/Revis around so he can focus on being a physical presence near the line.

In a vacuum, re-adding Chung makes sense. Neither Wilson is a lock to make the team next year, and neither McCourty nor Harmon is a traditional box safety. Chung is still just 26, has experience in the system, and has special teams value.
On a holistic scale, I don't get what they're doing with the safety position. Gregory was starting at the end of 2012 with Chung stapled to the bench. Now they cut Gregory and pick Chung back up? What are they doing here?

I literally thought they hired Eugene Chung as an OL assistant coach. Never could have imagined it'd be Patrick Chung. Whoa.
Pretty obvious, yesterday we brought in young QB's and the Chung move is to make sure they gain confidence in practice once we draft them.

That's what Mike Reiss opines. As I said, if he's not counted on to play a big role on defense and is just playing special teams it's not a terrible move. Reiss projects Chung to make the minimum $730,000 which would be less than Wilson.Ed Hillel said:

Actuallly still dont think Wilson gets cut given he plays so much on special teams and McCourty/Harmon/A Wilson/Chung/T Wilson/Ebner/Kanoris Davis is the is the safety depth chart.

WIlson stays as a core special teams guy. I think he stays.
You've got to assume BB got Chung very cheap, maybe Chung fills a role if he's healthy and you never know on April 3 who's going to be healthy on September 3 so why not give him a shot? Assuming the cost is minimal or zero there's virtually no opportunity cost.

The thing that always killed me about the fake punt was that it was a great call. If he had fielded the ball cleanly, he'd still be running.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. He has some serious issues in deep coverage (I'm pretty sure he got beat badly in the playoffs this season to lose the game vs the Saints) but was always pretty effective playing in the box. With Revis they should be able to play a lot more cover-1 and he'll be able to play a position to hide his weaknesses and take advantage of his strengths.
And everything I've said about him is relative to his status as a minimum salary player, there is nothing to lose here
I am sure he will be a fine special teamer, but I just associate him with two critical failures in the playoffs; the fake punt and he was a second late on the Manningham catch. What a huge play that was, from 1st down at the 12 to the 50 yard line in one pass with 3+ minutes left in the game. He is always a step too slow.
