Akron goes younger and local hiring Tom Arth as Terry Bowden's replacement. Arth was the head coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga and is from NE Ohio (Westlake native, played and coached at John Carroll).

That's a strange move going from one school in a conference to another especially when the two schools had the same record last year. Cignetti's half as far from where he grew up as he was; but still 200+ miles away.

Lots of noise that Houston is going to fire Major Applewhite and hire Dana Holgorsen. Seems odd he’d leave a P5 for Houston, but current AD didn’t hire him so you never know what’s going on inside the building. His buyout goes down after Jan 1, so if its happening, its probably soon after the New Year.

This was rumored two years ago as well when Herman left Houston for UT. It would be an odd move to go from a P5 to a G5 job, but I can see why he would go. He has a house in Houston, easier to recruit in Texas, and he missed his best shot to win big in Morgantown. Next year is looking like a 2-4 win type of year for WVU (Losing Grier, Sills, Jennings, Cajuste, and now our best defensive player David Long has declared for the draft). The fan base is down on him for the collapse at the end of the year and his stock will only fall next year.

If he decides to leave I'm fine with it and if he wants to stay I'm cool with that as well. Dana is decent coach and he has had success here but the feel around the program is starting to get stale. He hasn't improved on his shortcomings over the past eight years. He has failed to improve the defense, lots of mental mistakes on the sideline and field, and late season collapses have been the norm for most of his teams.

Not sure who WVU would hire if he does depart. There are lots of names being thrown out there but it is mostly message board fodder.

Richt must have been reading the SoCal vs SoBe comments in the other thread.

As a Nole, I would love Rex to Miami.

Houston has notified West Virginia & received permission to speak with Dana Holgorsen about UH job, source told @WatchStadium

I guess we'll know soon enough if this is real, or a leverage play for more money and an extension. I'm guessing its real given the fact that they granted permission. Buyout of his contract goes from $2.5M to $1M at midnight. Dominoes.

WVU will be terrrrrible next year and they already don’t like him. Might as well bolt before you’re fired.
Yea, there appears to be some stress there. He wanted an extension prior to this season, they haven't done that. Buyout goes down tonight. Current AD didn't hire him. If this is just one of those worst kept secrets, then I bet the AD has someone waiting in the wings.

I wouldn't say the whole fan base dislikes or even wanted him to leave. Dana has always been somewhat aloof and there has always been a distant feeling between him and the fanbase. Most of us would've been fine with him staying, but you won't see to many people crying that he is leaving. Dana wasn't happy when the AD didn't extend him until the end of the 2016 season and he was using Houston as leverage even then. From what I've been told he was playing the contract game again and Shane Lyons called his bluff and it looks like he is going to be out the door. As you stated, next year WVU is going to be rebuilding and the seat was going to get hotter. He also blew his best chance to win big this year and there isn't a Will Grier walking through the door to save him.

Even if the deal with Houston were to fall apart I think he'd have a hard time coming back. His name was floated by "sources" about the Texas Tech job a few weeks ago and the feeling in Morgantown is that people close to him were responsible for that. If he was trying to leverage a bigger contract here it didn't work and now he'll be leaving.

That’s my take as well. Fan base is mixed on him, I’ve always like him and felt the high flying offense gave us a chance in the Big 12, but most people I know closer to the situation haven’t been fans. So the stuff that is talked about closer to Morgantown seems to be negative. Looks like its time for a new ear, we’ll see how it goes.

Disagree with this. The one year Dana exceeded expectations West Virginia was a running team with a very limited quarterback. To me, the last two years proved that having a very good quarterback will help run up the score against bad teams but struggle over the course of the year against good teams.

When they hired Dana, I was super excited but he just can’t put it all together. Good for him that he rode his slightly above average time at WVU into one more good pay day. I bet Houston will end up disappointed over the course of the deal.

As for West Virginia, I think they need to find a coach who will take utilize a quarterback who makes plays with his feet. I thought Lowe looked like he had some talent and they have a handful of decent running backs next season. With the right hire, i believe they will be OK next season.

Looks like WVU is focused on Neal Brown from Troy. He's got a good track record at Troy, has Air Raid experience from prior stops, and has modified that attack with more power and running at Troy. Has big P5 wins the last few years, LSU and Nebraska, and nearly beat Clemson in '16 early in the season the year they won the natty. I was at that game and they were physical.

So if this is the new guy, sign me up.

Appears to be official now, without contract specifics released. I think this is a great move on the surface, but would like to know more about his recruiting chops.

Alabama has lost pretty much the entire offensive staff in the last few days. Offensive Coordinator, O Line coach, WR coach, and QB coach have all left. Maryland, GaTech, Michigan, and Miami in that order.

Interesting part is Dan Enos, QB coach and Jalen Hurts whisperer, left to take the OC job at Miami. So that looks like a possible landing spot for Jalen, if not a dead solid lock at this point.
