We're closing in on the start of the season and polls have been posted:

Hockey East:
Coaches poll: BC, BU, Providence, Lowell, Northeastern, UNH, Notre Dame, Vermont, Connecticut, Maine, Merrimack, UMass
Media poll: BC, BU, Lowell, Providence, Notre Dame, Vermont, Northeastern, UNH, Connecticut, Merrimack, Maine, UMass (this is how I'd rank them, maybe with Connecticut a bit lower)

USCHO: BC #1, BU #3, Providence #7, Harvard #8, UML #14; Notre Dame, Northeastern, Vermont, and UNH all receiving votes.

I'm surprised BC's ranked #1 in the country. I would pick them in Hockey East mostly because of their advantage in net with Demko back, but they've got some holes on the blue line that guys like Santini and the freshmen will have to fill.

Northeastern at #5 strikes me as too high since the defense hasn't been a strength and now goaltending is a question mark with Clay Witt gone. Kevin Roy's Hobey Baker campaign should be a lot of fun though. Can't wait to get going here soon.

Demko had offseason hip surgery and might miss the start of the season.
Was going to mention that, skipped my mind. Grzelcyk over at BU is dealing with the same thing but with ACL recovery.

Got my Half-Season for BU delivered on Sunday.   Totally looking forward to this year.  It won't be last year, but I'm hoping.  Also, I know he didn't even play last year, but I'm psyched Garrett Noonan isn't going to take a dumb penalty once a game this year.

Vermont with their most aggressive non-conference schedule in years.  At Minnesota for the HOF game, hosting North Dakota and Nebraska-Omaha, and their annual games with Penn State in Philly, Union, and St. Lawrence.

Between home and road, the Catamounts play 9 of the top 20 in the preseason USCHO poll.

Re upped for Quinnipiac season tix.   Preseason ranked 18th overall, picked 2-4 in ECAC.   Looking forward to the home game vs. BU - got a bunch of tix for BU alum friends and their kids, will be fun.

A season with similar results as last year would be a good one.

I expect another good season. They have everyone back except Peca and Federico and they got a 5th yr NCAA waiver for Alex Barron. The blueline is deep and they have Garteig back. Up front I think they will be able to replace Peca through multiple players and guys taking leaps.

Peca and Federico are losses, but that's not too much.   Garteig should be solid.   Curious to see the frosh.  I think the Trail, BC pipeline yielded another 3-4 players this year.   They play AZ state on 10/15, a team which could compete for west coast or western Canada players in the future.

A couple of the freshman Dman should contribute in Priskie, Shiplo and Fritz. Thomas Aldworth brings scoring that can help replace Peca.

Northeastern's got something similar and it's all in the first half. Colgate, Bentley, Minnesota in Minnesota, Vermont, bu, Notre Dame at Notre Dame, Providence, Lowell in Belfast, BC, and Michigan State. All before the break. And then when they get back they start at St. Lawrence and home vs. Quinnipiac.

Between that and the travel I don't know how they're going to do it. If they survive, I'll be optimistic down the stretch.

Doubleheader at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Sunday 11/1: UConn/Notre Dame and Army/Bentley.

I'm only a casual college hockey fan, but grew up in CT and follow UConn generally, so I might go to that game.  Also want to see firsthand the atrocity that is Barclays for hockey before I drop major coin on Islanders tix - I would be primed to root for an NHL team again, if it 1) weren't the Islanders, who are meh, and 2) the arena really sounds like an abortion for hockey- overheard a couple of guys talking about it on the subway who were coming from a game.

I went to the Islanders-Sharks game Saturday. Pluses are that for 37 dollars I sat in row 5 behind the home goal. Minuses are sorta everything else. If you're not in the lower bowl, I think it would be atrocious.

In its relative infancy, I am happy to see that Penn State at least received some votes.  Give the program a few years and I think people will be talking about the house that Terry Pegula built.

UNO Ranked number 1 in the USA Today poll, won all 4 games so far (against ranked opponents on the road). First game in their new arena this weekend.

Northeastern somehow got swept by Bentley despite out shooting them significantly on the weekend. Friday was 51-11 and Saturday was 41-17 I believe. Probably the most Northeastern weekend ever.

Been reading a little on Uconn's Max Letunov, Coyotes prospect, traded from the Blues. Anyone know any specifics on the admissions snafu that nixed him going to BU?

UConn tied for 1st in the Hockey East (have to say it while I have the chance) after a 5-2 win over BU last night.

Cavanaugh is quickly putting together a nice program on the fly. 8 games against top 10 teams since he took over and UConn is 4-3-1 against them. And unlike last year, this team seems to have some good young offense to go along with good goaltending.

QU swept #9 St. Cloud State at the Bank in impressive fashion over the weekend.   Offense looks good, and young players are contributing.  Hockey East looks like strongest conference so far, but ECAC has 5 in top 20.  It is early, though.

BU at QU Dec. 12 will be a good matchup.  I bought a bunch of tix for a couple BU grads and our collective kids - hopefully they'll behave (parents, not kids).

I was surprised by the public vitriol towards Bracco from media, coaches, and ex-players. Usually people keep their opinions on the DL out of respect for the kid, but people were openly shitting on him. I think the college/juniors battle is as antagonistic as its ever been.

I was too, but at the same time, can you blame them? The kid played 5 games and spent 8 weeks in class before bailing. I know he's just a kid but he really should've decommitted in the summer if he wanted to go to juniors.

(Unless of course something changed that we don't know about)

Quinnipiac went through the same thing 2 years ago with one of our top recruits that year. Played 5 games and then bolted for the WHL. Now he is playing in the ECHL when he could have been a junior in college on a very good team building up his body to make it pro ready. You can't do that with the major junior schedule.

Bracco is one of the best recruits in the nation however.  He broke a lot of records with the US Development program. He should turn out alright in terms of his NHL future.

“My grades were good,” Bracco said. “But I wanted to really zero in on hockey. It’s nothing against the program; it was great to be there for the month and a half I spent there.”

So why did he jump to the Rangers?
“You look at their record, the players in the room and the coaching staff,” Bracco told me, “there’s the potential to win a championship and play for a Memorial Cup.”

Yeah, and his former team has the potential to win a NCAA Championship.

At least Sonny Milano didn't play a few games before doing this.  Sounds like a Chris Bourque situation where he didn't want to go to college to play school.  At least Bracco's smart enough to not outwardly say that.

BU up 4-2 over Denver after 2. 3 of BU's goals have been dirty, in-front of the goal mucking. Denver is the cleaner/more precise team, but BU is winning with scrappy pkay

BU played really well for about the first 10 minutes of the 1st and 3rd period, and like absolute shit in the 2nd (4 goals on 5 shots against at one point). They were lucky to get a win.

The officiating was really bad. The threshold for calls varied all night.

Any news on Grzelyck's face/neck/whatever? He went down with 9 seconds left and was down for a few minutes. I didn't see, but my wife said she saw the puck go up and hit him somewhere high off a deflection.

Yea there was one holding call in the 3rd in particular that was pretty bad. Quinn wouldn't say it but he was pissed.

He also said that Grzelcyk's fine, so he'll be back out there tomorrow night I'd imagine.

Grzelcyk is on the ice tonight in the other half of the home/home.

Also, I have a half season package to BU, so I'll report what I can, especially about Grz/JFK, since they're bruins prospects.

Quinnipiac remains the only undefeated team in the country at 8-0 after the comeback win last night ag Cornell. Providence, Harvard and Yale all are unbeaten but have a tie as well.

Anyone going to the Michigan-BU games this weekend?
Am there now. I have never seen a dirtier team than Michican. Multiple times tonight they've drawn penalties on retaliation to cross checks/punches to BU player's heads. JFK just got 2 after he got punched and retaliated.

BU alum and season ticket holder. Total bias.

Also, in 4 years of going to games, I've never seen a team operate with more extracurricular physicality.

Michigan has been the better hockey team, and they're rightfully up 2-0 after 2.

They're also dirty as shit.

Your bias is showing. I've followed Michigan hockey for 15 years, and the ratio of finesse/skater type to goon is like 100:1. Most of the team is from the US development program (where I believe Quinn coached actually).

Michigan isn't that good anymore bc Red needs to retire, but the players they recruit are not goons.

In my 4 years of watching college hockey, I've never seen a player resolve an in-play scrum along the boards by grabbing an opposing player by the shoulders with your hands and dragging him backwards. I've also never seen the goalie take off his mask in the middle of play (the 2nd mask removal of the evening, his teammate was going behind his net with the puck). There were also multiple moments of Michigan players falling ON BU players and making it really hard for them to get up. Not tussle-for-a-second-or-two and then separate making it hard. Bear hugging them on the ice and preventing them from getting up making it hard. Teams have bad games, and I'll take your word that that was incredibly flukish behavior for your team. They play tomorrow at 4, lets see if Michigan plays a different game than the one they did today.

Edit, despite the loss, and outside of the shenanigans, Michigan was the better hockey team for the first 50 minutes. BU got 2 in 12 seconds with 9:30 left, blocked a Penalty Shot, then scored the winner with 3:00 left. Outside of those 10 minutes, they looked poor/tired all night. Michigan was getting runs of 3-4 good passes in a row, BU could barely manage 1-2.

You sound like you are one of the BU players' moms. That game was a normal college hockey game.

The goalie's mask had a broken snap. They discussed it on the broadcast.

Until Red retires, Michigan will be one of the more talented teams in the nation, yet they won't make the tournament.

Over on St. Botolph, Northeastern has somehow managed to one up last year's piss poor start. 1-9-2 and with Providence, Lowell in Belfast, and BC left this year, it'll probably be 2016 before the Huskies win a conference game. Ridiculous for a team with this kind of talent.

QU finally has a blemish, tieing 20th ranked Clarkson. Clarkson thrives on being complete d bags when it comes to late hits, high hits etc. the ref let a lot of it go by, despite looking right at a bunch of questionable plays. Game got rough, whistles swallowed late. Result - very entertaining game. Clarkson did play well, QU missed some good chances, but didn't play badly. 11-0-1 on season now. Good game v st Lawrence tonight.

Oh, in honor of MBD: FUCK CLARKSON!

Schools send kids off to JRs pasture for up to 3 years to get bigger and stronger (also to be able to space out their classes and manipulate scholarships)...as someone said perfectly on twitter "you shouldn't have to be 21 or Jack Eichel to play college hockey."

I hate adding restrictions, and it benefits the big programs (who get the best 18 y.o. players), but having 24-25 year olds playing college sports should be the exception not a common practice.
