Covid and MLB

Current Nats count is 4 positives and 5 players in quarantine as close contacts. The last day the team was together was Monday 3/29, so if there are no additional positives, it would be 7 days from contact as of Monday. Under MLB rules, that would allow the close contacts to be released from quarantine, so potentially the Braves at Nats series could go forward with 4 replacement players from the alternative site (all players there tested negative). However, DC rules require close contacts to quarantine 10 days, so the mayor would likely have to waive that for the series to not be postponed. Last year, she did not waive quarantine for Soto at the start of the year even when he tested negative every test after his initial positive. https://www.masnsports.com/nationals-pastime/2021/04/full-mets-series-postponed-as-nats-await-more-results.html

Is beating cancer a comorbidity? (Lester)

Praying for him, again.
He had that, and thyroid surgery this spring. Past cancer qualifies you for the high risk group for shots even if you aren't under active treatment. That said, Rizzo reports that only one of the positives is symptomatic with a fever; the others are asymptomatic.

Is there a point where, when the seniors, comorbid, and essentials have been vaxxed, we should consider getting pro athletes to the front of the line given the amount they interact, the amount they travel, and the financial and mental health impact (to society) of events being cancelled?

Just throwing it out there (and not saying we are there yet)...

This seems good for the Yankees not getting games cancelled.

Which players are considered within the Tier 1? Is it the whole 40man? I ask because I wonder whether teams are manipulating rosters with that consideration in mind? ("pitcher x said no way no how is he getting a vax, is on the bubble anyway, and has options; lets send him to AAA to bump up the numerator.") Can a team drop below 85% if they later call up the unvaxxed, or is the 85% MLB blessing permanent?

Great question, I don’t know.

Another question I have is will vaccinated players that have been exposed to COVID have to abide by the same rules as unvaccinated players.

For NY specifically, Boone seemed to imply last night that they would be well above 85 percent shortly, so it wouldn't be close.

Covid restrictions for the players/team?
As far as I understand, yes. Affects quarantine rules, as well.
quick and dirty search:
https://www.ketk.com/sports/mlb-to-relax-virus-protocols-when-85-on-field-vaccinated-2/

NEW YORK (AP) — Card games, car pools and eating at restaurants may be back in the major leagues later this season. Trips to church and sponsor events may return, too.

Mask use would be dropped from dugouts and bullpens, and electronic tracing devices would be eliminated when 85% of major league players and primary field staff are vaccinated against the coronavirus. Communal clubhouse video would return before and after games. Pool tables would be restored, along with team saunas.

A three-page memorandum from Major League Baseball and the players’ association sent to players and staff on Monday and obtained by The Associated Press also stated “all players and staff are strongly encouraged to receive one of the approved COVID-19 vaccines when eligible.”

I hope he doesn't end up experiencing anything serious, but imagine how much less he might experience if he had a different attitude about vaccination.

"I’ve received some questions and some requests regarding the vaccine. And for personal reasons and past experience I will not be taking it or advocating for it. I hope I don’t have to explain myself. And hope you all make the best decision for you and your family’s health."

Ninja Edit: You should really make it clear that was what Simmons said about the vaccine. Because my original reply was a very different comment.

It goes without saying, but these teams will mirror the country in general.

As the Delta wave hits us, lots of teams likely to be affected.

Reasonable to assume that if they're testing positive today (or yesterday), this is unlikely the result of where these guys might have spent their All Star break? That they contracted the virus sometime last weekend wherever the team was for their last series?

So.uh. It appears that judge is unvaccinated.
View: https://twitter.com/lindseyadler/status/1420589433905156099

Aaron Judge said he was only mildly symptomatic while out with COVID-19 and he was able to continue to take swings and stay ready while on the Covid-IL. He was also asked if he was vaccinated, and said "I am not getting into that."
also. This makes the decision to have him walk Hank Aaron’s widow (who is 84) all the more insane.

Yeah, we pretty much knew that when he tested positive recently, it was either him or Higgy who was unvaccinated, and it not leaking which made it pretty obvious.

Dave Martinez said he thought only one was unvaccinated.
“Thought?”

I read elsewhere that he said eleven if twelve were vaccinated. Hopefully he’s wrong (in that if eleven vaccinated people in a small sample can get infected, we’re in for some serious bullshit).

That aside, this is the second major COVID outbreak on the Nationalists this year.

There have been reported clusters of breakthrough infections among vaccinated individuals, and I have to believe a locker room is as good as place of any for such breakthroughs to occur. The efficacy numbers in the trials generally don't take into account locker rooms. Big difference is that the vaccinated are much more likely to experience no to mild symptoms and avoid serious complications, as well as be less contagious.

One tidbit I caught (on Chin Music, I think); most players who are vaccinated opted for the single J&J shot.
Makes sense given the time frame in which the majority of them have been vaccinated, which is during the season. J&J means only one chance to be hit with potential side effects, and therefore fewer missed games (especially if they planned the shot around an off-day).
