deep inside Guido territory
Craig Carton is expected to sign a contract shortly that will bring him back to WFAN in afternoon drive time, The Post has learned.
At the moment, Evan Roberts is the leading candidate to be Carton’s partner, according to sources. He is the only internal candidate FAN is considering. Carton and WFAN’s hope is to begin his new program next month, according to sources.
The Carton move will result in the retirement of Joe Benigno as a full-time host. Benigno has talked about retiring for years, so it is not being forced upon him.

Bummer about Beningo. He and Evan are the best sports talk show going. Carton certainly is entertaining...just wondering how he'll mesh with Evan.

If you haven't seen it, the Carton fall from grace documentary "WILD CARD' is excellent. It is on HBO MAX.
It was tremendous, what a story.

Sorry to see Joe go; awesome that he went from a famous caller to a famous host, it's a great story honestly, a true fan.

Wow - the comeback for Carton begins.

Here's hoping he never 'effs up like that again.

His family needs him.

They have a real nice chemistry-2 mostly normal NY guys who love sports, and wear their loyalties on their arm. Beningo reminds me of guys I know grabbing a beer or two after work, and bullshitting and busting balls.

Yep. I've expressed my appreciation for these two on many occasions here. I love when the Jets lose and Evan and Joe are lamenting. They are great at analyzing sports, talking about the issues, and you can tell they're fans as well. They're great together.

Fuck, I LOVE Joe. Knew this was coming in the short term, but I will miss his takes. His genuine enthusiasm was infectious....in sharp contrast to, say, a Tony Mazz. His regular off-season interviews with Belichick were also a treat.

I may be on an island on this, but to me, this is how sports talk show hosts should be; fans of the teams they talk about. When your team loses a big game, the last thing you want is two jackasses rubbing it in or being contrarian to get a rise out of people...............sports talk radio should be fun and a stress reliever, it should not tork you off or cause you to shut it off.

But hey, that's me, I doubt most people feel the same way.

Joe was great, I tune in after every Jets loss and he is always entertaining and never sugar coats things. I'm sure he'll enjoy retirement but he will be missed.

I purposely put Joe on when he was on the overnight show after the Pats won their first Super Bowl. As an old AFL fan, he was in his glory that night. "This is for Gino and Babe and Bo Nance and Larry Eisenhower and Houston Antoine and even Nick Buoniconti who won three with the Dolphins. God, I'm even happy for Billy Sullivan's ghost tonight!" Already beaming, I was almost in tears as he recited all the old Pats' players from his memory bank as an AFL fan. It was great.

That's exactly how I feel. Except...I loved Mad Dog in NYC being an anti-Yankee guy. That was awesome.

One of the best bits of sports radio ever. Even the way Francesa handled it was epic.
Mad Dog's line "Hey Mike, you were right, the Yankees cannot lose game 7 on Mantle's birthday, the game ended at 12:01 October 21st" or words to that effect was classic...................

Which was Whitey Ford’s birthday, a fact that Dog pointed out complete with a trademark cackle

I actually got excited about my commute the following day after Jets losses. Joe and Evan were a perfect pair.

Color me skeptical that Evan and Carton mesh well. Boomer was a perfect foil to Carton’s ego because he always had was-a-pro-athlete and financial success over Craig.

I'm actually happy about this and it makes no sense.

Carton is a type A loudmouth NYC personality who is basically a complete opposite of me. Hell, i went to the same communications school in the same university as him and hated the guys like him.

And he is a criminal who stole money.

Yet...I like him.

When did you graduate from Newhouse, bsj? I was class of ‘91. I actually worked with Carton at the radio station.

I was later, '99. I was in the Schein class.
Nice. I miss SU. I get there every year (though with COVID, maybe not this year). Love checking out campus, hitting M-street, etc. A lot is the same, but a lot is different. I want to see the Dome since it's been renovated.

Anyway, on Carton: dude has had serious issues, but he is one talented guy, that's for sure.

Same. We go at least once for football every year, this year being maybe the 2nd I have missed since 1999. Heck even had season tickets a couple years in that stretch. Honestly though I love it as an excuse to be back on campus. Just love being there

That's really cool; do you still work in radio?
No. I’ve called a number of college basketball and football games here and there but it’s totally a side gig that I get to do once in a blue moon. It’s super fun.

Honestly, SU is a great place, and I even like the city of Syracuse. The winters are rough, to be sure, but I lived there for five years after graduating and it was just a really good place to be.

That's great, good for you, best of luck in the future with that.

You never know where things can lead; I've been self employed for about 23 years and I had zero expectations that what I'm currently doing would lead to a full time situation, yet here I am happily.

When you do something you love, you never work a day in your life.
