If we lose the 1st play in game but win the 2nd, are we the 15th pick or 16th pick assuming a 1st round exit?

Also Assuming the Kings aren't in the playoffs.
I assume you mean Spurs?
Basically the options for the Celtics pick is as follows:
Lose both and Spurs don't make playoffs: 13th
Lose both as Spurs make playoffs: 12th
Any outcome where the Spurs don't make the playoffs and we make the playoffs up to and including winning in the finals: 15th

Edit- if we make the playoffs and the Spurs make the playoffs we pick 16th
Basically if we make the playoffs it then goes by record (but Spurs making the playoffs bumps a team with a better record than us into the lottery).

Yeah, Spurs. If Spurs make the playoffs and lose in the 1st round, they don't pick ahead of the C's?

So basically the Wizard draft after the C's with a win despite the worst record because they have a higher playoff seed? The Spurs would end up with the 8 seed if they made the playoffs.

Never mind, you are saying draft order is locked in after the play in games.

If C's win tonight don't we get 16? I'd think the winner of the next EC play in game gets 15.

14 teams in the lottery

It is possible, I suppose, that the Celtics are doomed to the purgatory of finishing around .500 each year and drafting in the middle of the pack each year. That way, then never pick up the talent to excel, but are never bad enough to tank. My memory is that Milwaukee was in that position for many years. Having drafted @ 14 in two consecutive years and looking at possible 15 this year, it's not a pretty picture.

Of course we only drafted at 14 the last 2 years because we traded for those picks. The C's actual picks were 26 and 22.

Plenty of good to all star players picked 11-16. Bam, Herro, Sabonis, MJP Jr., Donovan Mitchell Some picked at the end of the first round, like Butler and Gobert. Some come in the second round, like Jokic, Nurkic, Brogdon.

The 14th pick from two years ago not being a solid seventh man, at least, was a fail. He might come around, but Romeo just can’t stay on the court. Nesmith looks like he could be a solid seventh man next season, at a minimum.

Or, you know, their two young really good players could get better, as often happens with young really good players. There's no realistic path to title contention that doesn't involve further improvement from Tatum and Brown, but that's also reasonable to expect.

Not sold on "Romeo can't stay on the court." He has only had one injury since he started playing midway through his rookie year--the wrist surgery. His covid timing was really bad luck, but it doesn't make him injury prone.

Obviously it was not great that that combination of circumstances caused him to miss a lot of developmental games, but guys of his profile improve in their 3rd and 4th seasons all the time.

Or as I noted, the picks actually belonged to Memphis and Sacramento and he's just building a narrative.

Remember when the C's had a #3 and #1 pick in back to back years before they had those 2 #14 picks? Boy did we suck.

Danny nailing the two picks at 3 set up the franchise for at least a decade of success. It would have been nice if he could have crushed the two 14 picks.

Well two, as he had an abductor strain that put him out of the playoffs last year.

And he had a sprained ankle last year before he started getting minutes.

But this year since COVID, he's been great. Knock on wood!

Far harder to do and Nesmith is at least looking like a lottery pick of late. Missing on both is awful, missing one is expected. If one turns into a 30 minute rotational player, it would still be a success.

Plus it's far too early to judge either one, although in normal cases it would be ok to judge Langford. I'm not high on him but I know he's not a normal case with all the missed playing time.

I'm honestly not even sure what "nailing" the two #14 picks looks like...
2019- Of the guys taken after Romeo the best players are:
Clarke and Thybulle... Clarke is a solid but low ceiling guy who was ready right away, Thybulle is an all defense guy.
Okeke and Claxton started to show something this year... Romeo probably is still higher upside right now than all of them... we didn't really miss on a star, or even a starter.

2020- Best picks after Nesmith have been Quickley, Pritchard, Bey, Bane... none has been THAT much better than what we've seen late season out of Nesmith.

You'd be happy with 1 real rotation player out of back to back #14 picks, it looks like the Celtics have that, with upside for more.

Edit- also... 2019 has not been a good class so far. Now, how much of that is COVID etc.... who knows, but there have not been many late 1st breakouts.

Jordan Poole, Keldon Johnson in 2019.

The guy drafted right after Nesmith has been pretty good too and wildly ignored for some reason in Cole Anthony. RJ Hampton has come on strong since being traded to Orlando as well. But again, none are considerably better than Nesmith. And none of the players are considerably better than Langford. Or no one that you seriously miss passing on.

I mean... maybe?
Jordan Poole was Horrific as a rookie and not particularly good this year.
Johnson was decent in 300 minutes as a rookie and is bad this year.

Neither of those guys is a top 8 rotation player, which is kind of the point. Yes they've been better than the limited amount we've seen from Romeo, but if that is nailing a pick it doesn't matter if you nail it, those guys aren't any better than say... Semi? If you like either it's on the hope they get a lot better, and you could argue that with Romeo too. 2019 just hasn't produced a lot of impact players 2 years in.

Johnson averaged 28.5 mpg. And generally, young players aren't good. All 3 are roughly the same age, though Poole is a few months older. One would imagine Johnson and Poole will continue to improve. Going forward, I'd rather have either of them than Langford but I don't think it's a big deal nor would I be shocked if Langford ends up better than either of them.

We mostly agree though. Even if Langford washes out, they didn't miss out on a game changer.

Nesmith actually looked good tonight, especially on defense. They’re going to need him to provide them some quality minutes next round if they hope to steal a win from Brooklyn. (I would a thousand times rather have seen them lose to Doc and Philly, but oh well.)

This may not be a proper thread for this: but is it really worse facing Bkn than Philly?

With TL out (or seriously hobbled), no Theis, and JB out -- would you rather face a big and strong team like Philly, or a super skilled finesse team like Bkn? And although it is a strained comparision: considering the Celtics success against the last super skilled team (GSW), the Celts might be better off against Bkn

And I never want to lose to the 76ers, Doc or no Doc.

Noticed that too. I think he was confused for a good 3 minute stretch
I think he only got Nesmiths name right twice and they were both during breaks and not live play.
He called him Smart a bunch and then randomly called him Langford once

I am pretty sure he is saying they are going to lose to either team regardless and hed rather lose to Doc and Philly than Kyrie and Brooklyn. I agree with him 100000%

They're getting swept either way, I would a thousand times prefer not to have to hear the national press lapping Kyrie for his "overcoming his old team". But here we are. Because I like Doc and loathe Kyrie. Now, if Marcus would knock Kyrie out for the playoffs in game one, it might be worth while. Alas it won't happen.

Well they gave up 129 to PDX so I wouldn't be surprised if BRK hit 150 in a game.

I'd rather watch BRK beat BOS because honestly, watching Embiid go to the FT line 100 times in a four game series is probably worse for my blood pressure than a Popeye's chicken sandwich.

After a commercial break he talked about Nesmith correctly, sounded like he was reading a press release someone handed him during the timeout. College career at Vanderbilt, injury history, etc.

During live play, it was right back to "Smart brings it up, passes to Smart on the wing, Smart for 3". You'd think even if he didn't know the players, he would at least know if one player is passing the ball, he can't be passing it to himself.

Yea I have been commenting on Mike messing up alot this year. Thought maybe the fastball was slipping.

But JEEEZUS after listening to Albert repeated screw up Marcus (36) and Nesmith (26) I had a whole (re)new(ed) appreciation for Mike.

Did his producers not get into his ear and say "Hey dude thats Nesmith". Or Couldnt Mark Jacks just do the speak over "NE-Smith Bodying up on defense."

This. Embiid has lapped Harden in that aspect of the game, and that's saying something

Yeah, everytime Embiid gets touched, he has figured out how to flail every part of his body. It's pretty impressive. He basically looks like he just got shot.

Kind of wish someone would put us out of our misery and just shoot him for real. Well, maybe not for real. Maybe just tazed.

It is impressive, and like both he and Harden the last few years, effective. It just sucks to watch. It's one thing to get to the line because guys are hanging off you, but if I wanted to watch a soccer game, I'd do that.

He's a relic so he can go out and screw everything up. Dude is almost 80, getting in his ear aint going to help. He and Gorman should both be replaced.

Here’s the full package from Polish Power, TIMI. Aaron quick triggered most of his threes, and added a couple off the dribble. He drove at close outs, and either got to the rim, or dished for easy buckets. AN also made two sweet baseline pullup jumpers. A performance worthy of his mentor, Kris Middleton

He seems to often land off-balance, but he never jumps off-balance: to my very untrained eye he's very good at quickly getting his feet under him and going straight up into the shot, which I think bodes really well for him being able to shoot off the dribble. I'm very excited for him this year.

Really nice to see and in a perfect world, he'd be starting alongside the Jays. He's got a much higher 3 point ceiling than anyone else outside of Pritchard and as much as any of the young guys he seems poised to make a leap, so fingers crossed. Likely a conversation for 12 months from now given that some if not all of the guys in front of him (Smart/Richardson/Schroder) could be gone after the season.

Would it surprise anyone if Carsen became Eddie House in 6 years after 5 teams? House was Carsen at every stop until he landed in the perfect situation for himself.

He’d be Eddie House already if he could rediscover his shot. He’s been such a brutally bad shooter (for that role)for reasons unknown

That’s kinda my point. Shooters need for the game to slow down for them and that sometimes takes years. House shot below 35% on 3’s in each of his first three years in the league.

I think his shot is there but as HRB notes, he's still trying to figure when to shoot, when to drive, and when to pull-up (although he hasn't hit any pull-up jumpers in SL to my memory).

He still looks like he's thinking too much but maybe that's just me.
