Cutting The Cord on Cable/Satellite TV Service?

With more and more content companies announcing streaming options and streaming services like Netflix and Hulu greatly expanding their original content offerings, it seems like it's a matter of time before we go back to cutting the cord. In October we had Univision join HBO and CBS in announcing stand alone streaming services. I'm sure a big part of that is just creating leverage against cable companies, but it's a good sign, IMO, that we are headed toward a world in which the current cable model is extinct. I don't think we'll ever get to a place where everything is consumed a la carte, as that would have a serious negative input on new content creation, but seeing cable companies evolve from huge bundles to offering bundle packages for streamed content that people can build on their own makes a lot of sense.

In the short term, I expect the cable industry to fight tooth and nail for victories like they had over Aereo, but eventually they are going to lose that war. As for our household, what it comes down to is a handful of shows that we watch not being available through streaming services in a timely manner, forcing us to pay for them by the episode. If those shows were to pop up on Hulu, I'd cut the cord immediately. It's that a la carte spending that closes the gap between cable and just internet.

OTA antennas are very cheap and grab better than satellite quality video, from what I'm told.
I helped my 8th grader make an  OTA antenna out of a used aluminum pan from a frozen pizza and an old piece of coax.  Once we got it oriented correctly, I was blown away by the number of stations and the pic quality. (We're 8-10 miles NNW of the GWB)

Am getting ready to do this.  Grabbed a Roku 3 for $65 off Woot this AM.  Going to sign up for HBO Stream, MLB Package and already have NetFlix.  Add a Mohu Leaf indoor antenna and the ability to stream BBC World News through the Roku and I'll have plenty of TV for less than half the $125 per month I'm spending now.

Here are a could of sites that people considering this move might find interesting.

What's the difference between WatchESPN on Roku/Xbox/etc and watching regular ESPN on TV?

It is different. WatchESPN is basically all of ESPN but ESPN. You can see events from all over. Auburn v. Florida women's softball at 330 on a Wednesday? It's on WatchESPN. WatchESPN when I last had it didn't have sportscenter. It had highlights but it was all of their ESPN.com videos put together. Maybe that has changed.

WatchESPN now has live feeds of all the channels, but you have to verify it with a cable subscription.  So, not purely useful to cord cutters unless you can "borrow" a friend/relative's credentials.

For this reason, I've registered for a Sling.com account. No word on when I'll get one. https://www.sling.com/

I love college football. And damn it stung not being able to watch any of the final 3 bowl games.

I live in Quincy. I have a 140 buck bundle, I am using XBMC and Kodi now, which has been somewhat unwieldy but I am figuring it out.

I need the best internet available in the area, and also need the ability to stream ESPN without issue (I know everything is on KODI but if I want to watch a game, I want to flat out know that I can use ESPN and not be stressed out about finding the right stream, even though I am going to pay the $10  month for sportsaccess.se because I've heard good things.

Anyways, any other options but comcast? And what is the minimum cable I need to be able to access the ESPN app?

Thanks for helping.

I read it, and it says I should find someone with an account and give their info - what I meant to ask, and asked poorly, is if I do not want to rely on anyone else, is there an option in the south shore besides comcast who provides good internet, and how much cable do I need to buy to make sure the watchespn app will work? Can I buy just basic basic (which wouldn't even have ESPN) or do I need a package that has ESPN?

I apologize for my poor question asking skills

Everywhere
You need a package, that you pay for, that includes ESPN. For instance I only pay for basic cable, so I cannot utilize the WatchESPN app.

Wife and I just cut Comcast.  Got a Century Link account for $30/month for the wireless and Netflix on the Xbox plus an antenna.

I like ESPN and other channels (and we'll get HBO Go at some point), but not for the additional $90/month.

Traut, have you been using Sling?  If so, how do you like it?

I just signed up yesterday, mainly because I was thinking of buying a Roku stick, then found a Sling offer that sends a free Roku stick when you prepay three months of Sling ($20 a month).  I only needed something for 6 or 7 months, so this seemed like a great option for me (especially because this gives me live feeds of almost all the networks I watch... ESPN, ESPN2, TBS, TNT, IFC, AMC, Food, Travel, CNN).  I've been watching on my laptop and I love it so far, and it should be even better once I get my Roku stick in the mail.

I want to do this, but Comcast is the only viable Internet provider in my area, so I fear getting reamed by having Internet and voice only (yes, I still want a landline for now -- elderly mother cannot hear me well when I talk to her on the cell). A company called Frontier took over the AT&T Internet, and in this town, it supposedly sucks. Does anyone use the cable company only for Internet, and if so, is it under $100/month?

Also, there are already complaints here about what will we do during NFL season, etc. Wouldn't it be cool if the NFL sold the Sunday Ticket as a streaming service.

I've been trying out sling and it's pretty good.
One of the negatives is the ESPN channels don't allow you to use any of the DVR type controls - you can only watch live. You can't watch past programming.
Most other channels you can use DVR controls and you can watch past programming at any time, which is nice.

The only other issue is they only allow 1 login at a time, so if I'm watching something, my wife can't also use the service on another device at the same time.

I have internet only with Comcast in MA and I'm currently paying $59.99 per month. That's on the 1 year introductory price...I have no idea what it will go up to after my first year is up, but as best I can tell it'll be about $75-$80. This is for the 105mbit down/10 up plan.

I just had Comcast internet and phone installed today.  Price starts at $60/month for a year, then goes up to $80 or 85.  This is for the 25mbps internet plan.  If I went with the 105mbps plan, it would be $12 more (both in the first and second year.)  I bought my own telephony modem so I don't need to pay an additional $10/month to rent one.

Thanks for the insights. If nothing else, I have to buy my own modem soon. Ten bucks a month for rental is annoying. Now if I can just get everyone on board with listening to the Red Sox on the radio. Husband is a Yankees fan, though, so he has more of a challenge.

If he's on board with listening on the radio, you can get the MLB audio subscription for $19.99 for the season.

You can get a decent cable modem for $60 these days so after only 8 months, it'll pay for itself plus the MLB audio.

Just be sure you buy the right type of modem.  To get internet and phone thru Comcast, you need an Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter (EMTA), not just a modem.  I got this one, Arris Telephony Modem but have not had it long enough to recommend or not.

I appreciate that guidance -- I certainly would have bought the wrong type.

Two things to be aware of.

1) This is a refurb.  I have a refurb and have had zero problems with it.
2) There is a newer version of the Roku 3 out that adds voice search to the remote.  This is the previous version.

If you don't want the voice search then this is a decent deal.  Refurbs are usually in the mid $60's.  Woot shipping costs puts you right there.

I still haven't followed through on this recommendation. I was thinking about doing it today, but one of the commenters said that Comcast isn't supporting the device anymore (see link below). Have you had any trouble with the modem, specifically voice? It needs to be stated again how much Comcast sucks.

We have not had issues with the modem, voice or Internet, although we don't use voice often. YMMV, of course. Somewhere along in my research, I think I learned that the the entire thing about only the ones with "retail" checked on that list was likely to be BS. I also think at least one CS rep told me the modem was fine, and the tech hooked it up fine. Good luck.

I cut the cord on cable last month.  I do miss flipping on the Sox, but really, given this craptastic season, I think this is even saving me a lot of stress.

I watch TV online using the Watch ESPN app, the TNT app, the ABC app, the NBC Sports app, and Netflix.  I can't watch everything I want live, but I do get to watch a lot of good things as I desire.  I also have NFL Game Rewind, which is totally awesome.

I'm trying to stick it to Comcast.

I've got streaming Netflix which has some pretty cool content but doesnt have all the new shows I watch like Hannibal, Always Sunny, Brooklyn 99, and of course I cant ever take Real Housewives of (fill in the blank) from my wife.  I think I can pretty much get all my shows through HULU plus.

But I still need to figure out a way to watch and record all the Patriots games and Celtics games which seems to be my big stumbling block.  I'd also like to be able to watch the ESPN NFL games.  I can get all the Patriots games with a digital antenna but then need to find a way to record them.  I think I'm SOL on the Celtics games but I think I can stream ESPN.  Has anyone found a solution to receive and record the local channels?

Alternatively, I also just heard about the AT&T $200 Cellphone & TV deal but I havent been able to find the 'regular' price are the 1 year introductory rate yet.

Plug in an antenna and see what you can receive. 10 years ago, DirecTV did not provide local stations in HD, so I had to use an antenna. I could bring in everything but Fox, and I stuck an antenna on the roof trying to get it. (There is an antenna farm between the Fox affiliate's tower and my house.) So I get my local stations from DirecTV now, but I can tell you that watching SEC football without having DirecTV step on the signal is something you never forget.

If you like what you see, do a search for OTA DVR.

I rigged a hard drive to it and purchased the USB Wi-Fi Adapter accessory that they sell (to ensure the on-screen guide is updated with current information).  The on-screen guide works well for my needs and there are no ongoing fees.

I think the answer is yes, but the guide updates automatically right?  So basically the 'service' that you get from TIVO you get for free with the Channel Master.

I could hook it up directly to my router so I'd just need the $250 version and an external drive, so its probably $350 total which is pretty reasonable.

I've got to go through my DVR series with a fine tooth comb to make sure Hulu has them and test out an antenna but I think I'm really close to finally make that call to Comcast that I have dreamed about.

Ok, this will really be my final question.  I was just looking at Xfinity internet and all of the options 'required' Xfinity TV which I think is BS but unfortunately for me Xfinity is the only show in town.  My moronic city wouldnt allow Verizon to come in with fiber and I work from home so the painfully slow upload speed of DSL wont work and the thieves that are Comcast obviously know they are my one and only non-DSL option.  Has anyone got just internet service from Comcast and if so are there any tricks on dealing with this cartel??

Any suggestions for a family living in Denmark? We are only interested in American and Japanese TV/movies. But I am not sure which service would be the best living in Europe and not caring too much about local programming.
Full disclosure, I have generally missed the last 10 years of TV/entertainment innovations. I am paying about $150 a month for a bundle, but could reduce cost to about $100 if I cut cable.

I was thinking Chromecast, as it's cheap and I like Google stuff. But honestly I have no idea

I am getting ready to do this. My plans:

1) Call Fios and Comcast, figure out who is going to give the better internet only deal. I plan to buy a modem (have a router) as well
2) I already have a strong antenna up at the peak of the attic and coax snaked to all TVs.
3. Will use Roku (though lots of deals out for either TIVO Roamio or Apple TV) and have Netflix and Hulu. Possibly Sling instead of Hulu (haven't decided). Am also intrigued by the new DirectTV streaming.

Realized I am just a tick over 5 years since I cut the cord. I actually cut the Comcast cord 5 months ago (and yet they still haven't sent me the service credit that is on my final bill--go figure). To anyone in Boston who owns and doesn't want to pay Comcast money anymore, I use Netblazr, which is $40 a month for 15Mbps which is more than I've needed for streaming. There's a $200 fee for the setup and equipment (it's a small roof-mounted dish), but no modem is required. Saving about $25 a month after the first year, but most importantly I'm not feeding into Comcast's internet monopoly in every neighborhood in the city I've lived in.

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
If anyone needs a current gen Roku (premiere, premiere +, ultra): JC Penney is offering 25-30% off with 44BUYNOW, plus another 15% off if you click thru Ebates portal, plus another 5% off if you use a chase freedom or comparable card.

EDIT: looks like a rookie mistake in their IT dept. The coupon also worked on a PS4 bundle, and other items (electronics) that are historically excluded. They fixed it in a little over three hours (roughly 6pm-9pm Eastern)
