Cutting The Cord on Cable/Satellite TV Service?

The devices you will use to stream content. Assuming they’re somewhat modern, they are likely fine. But yes, your modem and your router are your major chokepoints. I just upgraded my modem the other week to a Motorola DOCSIS 3.1. So long as your router can provide gigabit speeds and you’re not suffering any dead zones where you want to stream content, you should be good to go.

FYI, the Motorola MB8600 does not work with RCN. I switched to RCN a couple of years ago when Verizon wouldn't negotiate, and bought that. It worked for a couple of months. RCN made a network change for DOCSIS 3.1, and it stopped working. RCN still doesn't have the right configuration for that modem. I ended up having to return that modem right before the deadline.

No kidding? Yeah I suppose I forgot to mention to verify with the ISP a list of approved 3.1 modems.

Thanks for pointing that out!

I just found a way to game Xfinity; used this trick a few years ago and forgot about it.

My intro price for the Choice Double Play (100mbps internet and TV channels I don't use) expired a month ago and went from 75/month to 104/month. Best available plans for existing customers were pricing out at $125 once you added all fees and taxes.

Xfinity currently in GF's name. I set up new service (once you put the address you select that you are moving there) for Blast internet (300mbps) and that's it for 59.99 before taxes ($10 discount for auto pay). Upgraded my modem (current modem won't handle 300mbps) for $60 and we'll be saving about $40 a month.

I would imagine this trick should still work between spouses?

Might look at switching 2 phones that are on Net10 to XFinity Mobile (unlimited is 45/line on VZW's network and both existing phones are compatible)

I'd imagine same last name, same service address, same (possibly?) billing info...probably not with your wife, unless she kept her maiden name. My wife and I did this for years before we got married, but we dropped Comcast before we got hitched. It was a pain in the butt to have to schedule a service call every time, but it was worth it.

I have done this even though my wife did not keep her maiden name. They don't care. Regarding calls, I still call (try to avoid it and use the chat instead) using her name. The reps don't care if it sounds like a guy using a woman's name. In a lot of cases, it's outsourced so they don't know if it's a woman's name or a guy's.

you shouldn't even have to schedule a service call; they are sending me a self install kit, although I'm not sure what is in it since I'm using my own modem.
if this is Comcast, there still was a service call. The technician met me at the house and he did some outside work. We chatted a bit with masks on.

I did not need a service call. Service on the 'old' account was cut off around 6 AM yesterday morning (internet in the house stopped working), when I got home I set up the new modem and within 15 minutes I was live. No house visit, no phone call.

Self install kit came with a free 'Flex' box, which looks like Comcast's version of the Roku. I'll put it on the TV in the basement.

One good thing about the "Flex" box even if you don't use it is that it entitles you to NBC Peacock Premium service for free.

Has anyone been able to get YouTube TV to work with a VPN? I'm in PA but use a Boston address to get NESN and NBC Sports Boston as my local sports networks. Problem is, I need to be logged in from the Boston area every 30 days to keep viewing them and the person I've had signing in for me isn't always in the area now. I'm using the Location Guard extension with Chrome to place me in Boston but YTTV sees my VPN and won't let me log in. Suggestions?

I thought it was every 90 days. Could you use a Boston-based VPN like this one:
https://www.personalvpn.com/network/usa-vpn-server-gateways/boston/
Another option if this person has a PC that's always on at their house and use TeamViewer to login to it.

Or find another person in the Boston area to login for you.

Thanks for the tip about personalVPN - SoSH to the rescue again! It seems to be working, YTTV didn't detect it - when it's disconnected I see my local PA networks and Boston networks when it's connected. YouTube TV requires a login every 90 days in general but every 30 days for NESN and NBC Sports Boston to watch pro teams. In a strange quirk when I watch on an iPad, iPhone or computer it always show my local PA networks, but when I watch on AppleTV or Roku it shows Boston local networks,

I suspect Google/YouTube is intentionally lax on this, but with devices that are pinpointing location they can't let it slide. I got YTTV basically entirely for this purpose but a couple months ago paused it when sports were mostly in doubt and when it was demanding I update my home location and just resubscribed to MLB.tv for the Sox instead.

First time I've taken time to listen to Brian Neylon (Dish group president) on the discussion v. Apollo for why Fox (and CW) isn;t shown on Dish. I'm inclined to agree. Is there something hes not saying that might make someone agree with Apollo instead? What's the whole truth in this battle.

Oh wow. Huge.

Edit: if I add Red Zone, I'll be up to $130/month for internet + YTTV, plus another $7 for Disney+ puts me at $137. I also get Prime Video through my Prime account, not sure much to value just that piece of it. And then I bum Netflix from my brother and his wife. So I'm creeping back closer to where I was before, somewhere in the $200 range. Not ideal.

I'm really hoping that 5G will offer real competition for home internet. That's the one part of the equation that the price is fixed based on where you live.

I pay $55/month for Fios, I don't really have a problem with that number. I think it was maybe $50 a month when I first joined but it hasn't gone up 60% like YTTV over the past two years. With the sports package YTTV is $76 a month, it was $40 when I first joined. That's cable company level screwage.

It is, but I don’t know if it’s really fair to expect YTTV to be offering close to the same channel lineup as cable (minus the numerous worthless channels that cable companies offer) and not charge close to the same amount.

My view is that even if I end up paying close to the same amount for YTTV as I did for cable, it’s still a good trade given the various benefits of YTTV, including unlimited DVR/ease of recording shows, ability to watch on any device anywhere in the country, much more transparent pricing, not having to own or “rent” a physical cable box, being able to cancel instantly without haggling with a rep for 30 minutes or more, etc.

Yeah I agree the price isn't unreasonable. When I wrote the screwage line, I was more referring to how when you first sign up for cable you get a nice bundle for whatever $80 a month and then it jumps to some ungodly number after 1-2 years. Felt like YTTV pulled a similar move. But it does seem to be more content driven.

I think it’s partially content driven and also the result of an intentional strategy to undercut cable companies initially by offering unsustainable pricing to attract subscribers (and to be competitive with older services that are now defunct, like PSVue, or offer significantly less content than the current version of YTTV, like Sling).

This is where I sit. Even with the recent price increase, I'm still paying ~$70 less per month for internet & YTTV than I was paying for internet & FiOS TV. But if the costs were identical, I'd still take YTTV, and it would be an easy decision as there are so many more benefits with a streaming broadcast service.

But NFL and Red Zone are for a short time. That goes back down after the SB. Don’t add up all your streaming stuff, you’d still have that, on top of your normal bill. Prime is easily covered by the free shipping if you buy even a decent amount of stuff on Amazon. I’m still strong with att including hbo at $60. I have no earthly use for NFL channel or Red Zone, so I don’t care about that; the one downfall is no NESN but frankly even last year, I just listened to it on radio while I did other stuff so  don’t miss it much.

Honestly my biggest annoyance is having my parents or friends repeatedly ask if I’ve seen a certain commercial. We don’t watch live TV, basically at all, outside golf or Pats games, the news a couple times a week and record some stuff like Daily Show or Atlanta that aren’t even on right now. I’d drop but I’d lose my intro pricing.

Does anyone know if you can access Sunday Ticket through ATT NOW? I'm having trouble online and via chat getting a straight answer. Basically, my dad prepaid for Sunday Ticket so he could watch Brady, but took a test run on my ATT NOW account on his Roku and would like to combine the two and dump DirecTV so he can lower his bill substantially, if possible.

Not sure about Now, but depending on where you live, you can do it completely ala carte.

edit - hmm, but I get that might not help if already prepaid for Directv. But theoretically he should be able to cancel Directv and just do it through the app.

By the way, your post reminded me to finalize my subscription. And I discovered (after purchase) that you need the MAX version of the sub for it to work on Roku. Now I have to dig my PlayStation out of the closet and see if it works on that...

But worse case, I’ll be able view on iPad, and maybe cast to the TV.

Fubo has ESPN and NFL Network now, plus Red Zone in the Sports add-on package. Their pricing and lineup is almost identical to YouTube TV. Check it out if you’re comparing services. I’m starting a Fubo trial tonight. They don’t have ABC in my region but YouTube TV does, so I’ll probably switch back to YTTV for the remainder of the Patriots season (however long that is).

Here's my referral link for Fubo if anyone is interested in signing up: https://refer.fubo.tv/x/r3KsRb

I've been using Fubo for a couple weeks now ($20 off per month for 3 months on an Amex deal). The downsides compared to Youtube TV:

1) no ABC
2) no TNT
3) no DVR capability on ESPN

Aside from those issues it has worked great. I will likely switch back to Youtube TV once the Amex offer runs out.

I was out of town for the summer so I cut YTTV at the end of June. Now that I'm back, I'm on the fence about whether I even need any live streaming. Hockey and baseball are over. The Celts might be done tomorrow night. The only thing I'd even watch live is the NFL at this point. Are there even any shows this fall that I'd need network TV for? For the NFL, I can figure other ways around it (like Game Pass for $100 for the entire season - I rarely watch the Pats live any more anyway).

Can you get the Directtv Sunday Ticket free preview Sunday online?
I don't think so.

I may re-sign up for YTTV with the free one week preview, see how the Pats look, see if I'm into it or not, and make a decision from there. While I watched some of the Bs and Cs this summer, it really didn't have the same feeling for me. But part of that may have been due to the bubbles. The NFL may feel a bit more real with games at home stadiums and some fans in some stadiums.

Yeah it could be. Or a it could be like a bad school play.
Sorry, just frustrated. It is great that you'll be able to watch the debates and if you decide to, still save some money.

Locast.org has ABC and is free (assuming it's available in your region). It won't have a slick DVR interface or anything, but it's the full channel.

I just read through this thread and don't think I see an answer to this question:

I would like to watch tomorrow night's Celtics-Raptors Game 7 on my TV. The issue is that friends would like to come over and watch as well, and my wife and I aren't willing to entertain them inside (they have kids who may not be as careful as they should be, leave it at that). I'm happy to have them on my deck or in the garage (depending on rain), but looking at my setup (I have cable and internet through xfinity) it seems doubtful I can find a way to do a direct connection to my TV in either place (deck or garage) without going out and finding at least a 50-ft length of cable so I can move the box into one of those locations.

So, the TV is a smart TV. Is there some obvious way to stream tomorrow's NFL game onto that TV? I might even be talked into subscribing to something if it's not too expensive as I might want to do this for the NBA playoffs and the NFL season.

BTW, I'm already aware that I could do a reddit stream, though I'm not sure how I would do that direct to a smart TV but I know I could do it through a laptop and then connect that into the input of the TV. I'd just like something simpler.

Appreciate any thoughts

The NFL game is tonight, and it’s on NBC.

But also, there‘s probably a TNT app you can download to your smart tv and access with your cable info.

It's a little pricey for a one-off, but with that setup you might want the flexibility going forward: consider an HDMI transmitter, so you can just beam whatever's on the TV to one of the outdoor locations. View: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Extender-Pass-Back-Transmitter-Projector/dp/B07H7FJ2TF/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=hdmi+transmitter&qid=1599768120&sr=8-6

If you want to use the indoor TV and transmit at the same time, you'll also need an HDMI splitter such as https://www.amazon.com/Updated-2020-Version-HDMI-Splitter/dp/B0822HWM4L/

Yeah, it started at $39.99 a month and is now up to $64.99 a month. 62.5% increase in 2 years. It's kind of ridiculous, but still probably a better deal than cable.

Edit: keep in mind that if you are doing this in your garage or on your deck, you need to be sure there is sufficient internet signal!

EDIT: Ouch! Looks like YTTV sub now costs $64/month--is that right?
Sling is 1/2 that price. If you haven't had it before there's a 3 day trial.
