Hockey has lost another great player today with the death of Dale Hawerchuk at the age of 57 from cancer. Dale scored over 500 goals and almost 1500 points in a career saw him play for Winnipeg, Buffalo and Philadelphia.

I never really got to see Winnipeg much as a kid, so he was largely a name and some very impressive stats. 87 Canada cup was probably the first time I realized just how good he was.

I’ve always heard he’s one of those guys that everyone liked. Sucks to see a guy like that go.

Ha I came here to post exactly this. I would play with Buffalo as my team in NHL 94. Mogilny - Lafontaine - Hawerchuk were basically unstoppable.

Super underrated player.

Same here. Although i switched to Pens (Mario was like Tecmo Bo) and Bruins on occasion. Hawerchuck had a unique ability to play with both finesse and also to do the dirty things (giving Pat and Alex the ability to do what they do best).

F Cancer.

I miss NHL 94

Same here. I remember reading all those stats and wondering who is this guy. Back then my exposure to NHL games was through whatever Whalers games were televised, and they played each other maybe twice a year and games between them were not necessarily televised.

@RobTheHockeyGuy - Rick Bowness emotional seeing images of Dale Hawerchuk on the video board. Bowness coached Hawerchuk with the Winnipeg Jets in the 1980s.
