Do you mean because that's supposedly (or actually, don't know if it was confirmed) how long the CPR was? That's actually the whole point of CPR is you press on the chest and basically squish the heart so that it pumps blood throughout the body, for really the sole purpose of getting oxygen to all the organs. So while it definitely wasn't ideal levels of oxygenation, his brain was definitely getting something during that time. (And if I misunderstood you or there's information I don't have, my apologies!)
Certainly not the same situation but ~7 years ago my FIL had a massive heart attack with my wife and MIL present and from that very very long night I remember how important those minutes are. MIL administered CPR and, very luckily and somewhat coincidentally, they happened to be in a neighborhood very close to an ambulance station.

He was intubated and Doc gave us what sounded like a very bad prognosis (plans to induce hypothermia) based on not being certain how long he may have been oxygen-deprived for, but by night’s end he was showing clear signs of brain function and he was in the clear to be moved for bypass surgery the next day.

Eh, regarding all the Schefter talk here tonight he is who we think he is. He's a breaking news guy who doesn't deal in detailed follow ups and doesn't seem to be the most empathetic guy. But he is part of the Monday night crew and was worth having on set at least due to his contacts and if anything "newsy" came up. It's the same when the NBA news-breaker Woj is on the ESPN studio team, I believe he may have been around the night of the Bucks walking out of their game in the bubble, but he didn't have too much to add to that broadcast for obvious reasons.

Clark was definitely the right empathetic guy to have on tonight however. Am not sure if he was even scheduled for this evening, but teaming him with SVP was perfect.
Schefter’s on now. He’s kinda an idiot with no feelings, but he’s talking about the toy drive and the need to not play the game until everyone is cleared.

He's on now. He's ok. He's talking about the league office etc. It's his beat. He's not a font of empathy and his face looks like the pad of an orbital belt sander but it's not offensive.

If I'm the Bills organization and the league is asking us to play the game tomorrow, I'd probably just forfeit and focus on Sunday. It'd be a shame to lose out on a bye, but I'd think you'd rather get your team's mental health sorted out. Having your team play tomorrow is just asking for more injuries.

The fact they left means they aren't playing tomorrow IMO. The PA would get involved. Thus isn't a baseball rain delay

I think focusing on Sunday is hard at this point.

Likely impossible to get hotels for the entire org this late
Right there’s a very practical problem of securing a 100 or so hotel rooms in a small city on a moment’s notice.

Also a practical problem of having a 100 people cram into a hospital.

And a charter flight from Cincinnati to Buffalo has to be about a 45 minute flight. They could come back tomorrow morning if need be to play or visit him.

that shot of Diggs walking to the medical center alone in the dark was heartbreaking.

Harvey fighting back his own tears on ESPN. Start the day as a sports reporter end it as something entirely different.

SVP - maybe let the guy go and not toss follow up questions.

Man, if there was a chance of going to see their teammate in the next day or so, you’d think they’d stay.

I’m sure I’m reading too much into it, but, ugh this sucks.
I'd have thought they'd want to be in Cincy in case they could visit Hamlin in the hospital.
From everything that we know (and we don't know everything) Hamlin's condition is likely to allow him extremely limited visitation. Add to this that we have learned as to hospital policies having undergone many changes in the past couple of years.

Good point. Even if the news from here forward is unexpectedly positive, and there’s a chance to finish this game tomorrow or Wednesday, shuttling the players home on a short charter flight from Cincinnati to Buffalo is probably the most practicable option. There’s certainly no scenario where 50+ Bills players are visiting Hamlin in the ICU, so there’s little downside to leaving.

With respect to my other doc friends chiming in, the 9 minutes of CPR (presumably high quality, and fairly immediate), is a very-good case scenario, IMHO - less than 3 rounds of ACLS. I don’t see therapeutic hypothermia or anything as likely to be indicated with that short of down time, in an incredibly healthy young patient.

There is a reason why the highest rate of (neurologically intact) survival in cardiac arrest is in casinos - because there is an immediate response of people trained to give high quality CPR and early access to defibs. In-hospital cardiac arrests even do worse than casinos!

Yep. One of the most bizarre dynamics of sports fandom is how so many people don’t recognize that athletes are actual human beings. These players must be racked with worry right now. Stephon comes across as a genuine person and a real leader. Not at all surprised he took an Uber to the hospital.

I'm going to guess that's not a conversation that's being had.

That’s a pretty amazing fact about casinos. Never would have guessed.

ESPN is covering this quite well. People hate them, I get it, but they are the preeminent sports news organization. SVP, Ryan Clark and everyone involved with the current live telecast are reporting with grace and competence. The news nets are doing mostly speculation and meta commentary from what I see. I find that much worse.

Honestly it might push back everything a week or more. Super Bowl included.
That's not likely. The host city can't handle moving everything out a week. The hotels are all likely booked already. Not to mention everyone with tickets having to rearrange travel and their lives in general. They'll figure something out, but I highly doubt it's this.

SVP really killing the NFL for being seemingly willing to resume the game. I haven’t watched sports center in forever, but I wasn’t expecting this level of… autonomy?

Last bit of commentary, before I go to sleep:

In cardiac arrest, we used to proceed as: check if shockable rhythm, if so, shock ->3 min CPR -> check if shockable rhythm, if so, shock ->check pulse -> if no repeat CPR.

now what we try to do is: 3min CPR -> check if shockable rhythm, if so, shock ->2-3 min CPR -> check pulse

seems similar but the point is that it is almost impossible to get less than 6 minutes of CPR now if people are following protocol, even in best case scenario.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is inherently less efficient at delivering blood and oxygen to the brain than a beating heart. Even when CPR is performed according to guidelines, it can only deliver approximately 20 percent of normal blood flow to the brain.

Likely discussing game reschedule plans, no?
That’s a very optimistic take. Hope you’re right.

(My guess is there’s no rescheduling talk until there’s clarity on Hamlin’s condition, which isn’t expected until morning at the soonest.)

I'm giving the NFL a pass on this. It was a fluid situation. Maybe it is SOP in these cases to take a 5 minute break after serious injuries. When it became apparent the seriousness of the situation the game was never close to restarting.

yes. It is much better to be alive than dead and getting CPR. :)

but honestly, the 20% is very important, not just for the brain, but for the chance of restarting your heart.

your chance of getting g your heart to restart is very dependent on your”coronary perfusion pressure”, CPP… which simplified is basically your diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number on your blood pressure). For most of us, that number is going to be 60-90 mmHg.

many studies show that if we can hit a CPP of 15-20mmHg during chest compressions (CPR), our rate of ROSC (return of spontaneous circulation, AKA, heart starts beating enough to generate a pulse/blood pressure) increases dramatically.
