I'm not usually one to pity other AL East teams but holy hell that would suck for the Orioles. Finally find some success and promptly have your GM stolen away by a divisional opponent, as you look on helplessly because it's technically a promotion? This President-with-GM structure might be getting out of hand.

The Jays are really going for that Expos Deux feel, eh? What's next, Felipe Alou as manager?

It makes some sense for Duke, the Jays have a lot more resources than the Orioles have and there's no being upstaged by the field manager. Working for corporate ownership probably isn't ideal but it's a lot better than working for Peter Angelos.

I dunno, he seems to have done fine working for Angelos so far.

Quite a meteoric resurrection for the Duke. From a baseball pariah for ten years to possib,y being president of the Jays. Somewhere Mike Gimbel is taking all the credit.

Couldn't the Orioles just promote him and give him more money if they really wanted him to stay?

If he's replacing Paul Beeston, this is a totally legit promotion.

“@Ken_Rosenthal: Sources: Duquette wants to leave #Orioles, become #BlueJays’ prez/CEO. Some with club not opposed to his departure. Angelos standing in way.”

Reiterating what he said in Dec, #Orioles Peter Angelos is NOT going to deal Dan Duquette to #BlueJays. "It's not going to happen" he said

Not that Angelos would care but executive movement between teams is generally viewed as OK as long as there is a promotion involved. Which is why Theo is "president" of the Cubs. On the other hand I think this will actually be a real promotion. Toronto already has a pretty good GM in Anthopolous and he (DD) will be replacing Beeston. So I think this is going through and Angelos is just pontificating to drive up the price.

Once execs start going down the very public path of wanting to move on it almost always happens.

Never underestimate Angelos stubbornness. Duquette going nowhere after Jays wouldn't meet Angelos price. Jays should have tampering fine.

I don't get it.  Is Dan Duquette really worth all this?

He *has* been pretty successful everywhere he's gone.  You could argue about the extent of his success -- NO RINGS!!!!!), but his time in Montreal, Boston and Baltimore is a pretty good track record.

Why should they have a tampering fine?

Meh.  Almost all of the Baltimore pieces were in place when he got there.  He hit big with Cruz last offseason but also gave Jiminez a big deal that they'll be paying for another three years.  And he traded Eduardo Rodrgiuez for two months of Andrew Miller.  This offseason, they've gotten worse (replaced Cruz & Markakis with Travis Snider) while Toronto and Boston have gotten much better.  Keith Law has the farm system ranked 22nd.  ZIPS has them projected for 79 wins this year, last in the division.

As for Montreal/Boston, it's a completely different landscape now.  I don't think he's incompetent, just not so awesome that he's worth all this trouble.

Contact was made by Ed Rogers, who is remarkably inept, with both Kenny Williams of White Sox and with Duquette without prior permission from either owner. And it was done the week before the winter meetings by a division rival and could have thrown a major wrench in offseason. But MLB and Manfed hate Angelos due to the MASN dispute with Nationals and tried to force this through by taking All Star Game away from Camden Yards.

Yeah, that Keith Law is usually right on the money. And when he was a Baltimore writer, he and Angelos had significant disputes which has biased Law against Os for years. And ZIPS had us in last place last year and in 2012. Snider and Steve Pearce in right will outproduce an aging Markakis who also just had neck surgery. Last year saw a 12 game edge without Wieters, Machado, and awful season by Chris Davis. Wieters and Machado and any type of walk year improvement by Davis will make up for the lost
production. Rodriguez is a good prospect, but Buck and Duquette were looking at playoff matchups and Miller was huge against Tigers in sweep of ALDS.

Well...lets see. Since the Orioles were created in 1954, they have 3 World Series championships and 3 other World Series appearances. They have 9 AL East division titles. Plenty of hardware and Nancy knows where the crabcakes are.

I'm not sure "created" is the correct word, Browns fan.

Sure it is.  If you want to include the Browns history with the Orioles, feel free.  I have been an Orioles fan since 1965 but do not consider them to be the St. Louis Browns.   But, if that is the methodology, then we should go back to the original National League Baltimore Orioles franchise that moved to New York, where they were first known as the Highlanders, subsequently becoming the Yankees.  So using that method, inclusive of all the rings, then pass over all those rings from the Orioles/Yankees column  and add them to the Browns/Orioles column.

On the one hand, execs are usually allowed to move on for a clear promotion. On the other hand, Angelos performed career CPR on Duquette, so perhaps he should be expected to stay with the Orioles for more seasons.

1983 was a long time ago. The historic run of ineptitude that ended in 2011 was not.
