Former Major Leaguer and MLB Network analyst Darryl Hamilton was apparently shot to deathby the mother of their child yesterday in a Houston suburb. The woman then turned the gun on herself.

According to a release from the department, police were called to a house at 4:45 p.m. Sunday after someone heard gunshots. When officers arrived, police say, they found found a male body near the front entrance. The 44-year-old Jordan was found in another part of the house. Police also found a 14-month old child in the home, unharmed. Hamilton, 50, and Jordan were the parents of the child who is now in Child Protective Services care.

Oh man, that sucks. He was a decent player that had a nice career, got on base at a nice clip, just had no power.

I know that these events are called murder-suicide, but I hate the judgement-free implications of that phrase.

Darryl Hamilton was murdered.  His murderer took the coward's way out and killed herself.

I think it's phrased that way because there is so often an element of mental illness involved in these cases. It's usually not quite as simple as you are describing it, AR. This is incredibly tragic, as these cases always are. Nothing but bad here, except for the fact the the child was left unharmed.

I understand.  And we will undoubtedly learn more as the days go by.

But when an incident like this is reported as a murder-suicide, it implies either that the person identified in the story was the murderer or that there was some sort of pact between the two.   And in this case, it seems pretty clear that Darryl Hamilton (like Kasandra Perkins in the Jovan Belcher case) had no active part in what happened.  He was murdered.  Then the murderer turned the gun on herself.

So you're saying that it was a murder-then-suicide? We should find something a bit less clunky than that. Any ideas?

Father's Day tragedy for his daughter to have to think about.  She won't remember any of this happening but she will know the story.

Sad news on a great baseball guy.  Enjoyed his MLB.TV appearances.  Prayers for all the families involved.  As mentioned above, I'm sure more details are forthcoming.

I started a thread at simultaneously as this one titled "Darryl Hamilton shot dead in murder-suicide" that was superceded by this thread. I figure that thread was scrapped since more than one was there, but I prefer how active sounding titles can be a bit more clear.

Incredibly sad.

I remember him most from the podcasts with...who was it Alan Swartz? I can't find the info. I'm sure others will remember his athletic ability but I will most remember him for his wonderful voice and what I learned from him about baseball and baseball players.

I was fortunate to meet him when he was playing in Texas. He had an infectious grin and played baseball hard and all-out. His defense was always underrated if I recall, he seemed to not be talked about as one of the best active OFers even though he was.
