“@PeteAbe: #RedSox president Sam Kennedy said the bobbleheads were “inaccurate” and judged to be racially insensitive.”

2009 was his slow start. Never totally recovered from it. His wrist was probably not 100% healthy in 2009.

.
Yeah, I went to game in June against the MFY and he hit his 3rd HR of the season that year. He looked cooked the first 2 months. There was something going on with his Dad as well if I remember correctly, he had some illness and was being treated in Boston. I think that came out after he started hitting again, but I am sure the wrist was a factor as well.

If the slump lasted another month he might have got the Arod treatment. Fortunately, he did not. Who would have predicted his 2011-2016 seasons at age 27-32 (153 OPS+) would actually be better than 2003-2008 (152 OPS+) at age 35-40. That has to be unheard of

Fouled a ball off his shin in a 9-4 game, couldn't walk off under his own power.

Red Sox nation waits with bated breath.

Not here
If the injury is as significant as it appears, one wonders if he decides he doesn't want to go out like that and comes back for another season.

Or, one wonders if he just can't stomach the thought of trying to rehab all the way back and just packs it in now.

I think it's likely a bad bone contusion - out for a week maybe. Worst case scenario would be a nondisplaced tibia fracture, that would basically end his season

Farrell mentioned that the shin was already bruised from a similar foul a few games ago.

X-rays won't always rule out a non- displaced fracture. Didn't Ellsbury have rib fractures missed on X-ray? Sometimes you need to confirm a fracture on CT or Mr imaging. Unfortunately I see fractures missed on X-ray all too often.

Interesting article on the different type of bone bruises that came out when Teixeira was injured on a foul ball. There are different degrees of bone bruises with the worst such bruises taking as much as 4 weeks to heal. In Teixeiras case it turned out he had a fracture which was not diagnosed for several weeks and was missed by earlier x-rays and MRI's which had diagnosed a deep bone bruise..

Hopefully its a lesser bruise and he is back in a week or two

Yeah, maybe I should have said "confirm" a fracture. Like I said, not a doc.

I am in the midst of healing from a periosteal hematoma (the 2nd worse type of bone bruise). This is what Teixeira had and my location is even similar to the players ----- tibia. I got it from falling on a fence, baseball players get it from fouling a pitch off their shin. I can tell you it is 2 weeks now, and I just started to walk normally. The pain was delayed and started about 2-3 days after the fall, but it was excruciating from days 3 - 10 and I limped significantly. It especially hurt any time I changed position or stood for a few minutes and actually felt better when I walked for a while. I can't imagine playing until day 11 (I am a runner, and am planning on starting up again on day 14). Then again I am 15 years older than Papi, and didn't do any therapy, so one can assume, their recovery time may be shorter by a few days.

The wrong side of the bridge....
With 27 HR, Papi is now all alone in 2nd place all-time for home runs by a 40-year-old, passing Dave Winfield and Hank Sauer at 26.

He needs seven more to tie the leader, Darrell Evans. If he can hit at least three more in what's left of August, he's got a pretty good shot at the record.

For batters 40+, Ortiz now holds the single season records for doubles, extra base hits, RBIs, and is tied for first in home runs with Darrell Evans. The only people with a higher OPS are Williams in 1960 and Bonds in 2007. Good lord.

Leaders by age (per BR, not counting tonight): 40 | 41 | 42

Edit: He has 19 more extra base hits than Dave Winfield, the previous record holder. Crazy.

In that 1960 season (where Ted finished a respectable 13th in MVP) he had 15 doubles. Ortiz has 46 with 2+ weeks to go

Did the Rays honor Jeter on his farewell tour? Mo?

If not, perhaps it's just an organizational policy to not take part in these farewell tour farces. If so, then they look petty and, well, Rays like.
