He did miss the highest pressure penalty he's ever taken (in the 2008 Champions League final), although it was a long time ago.
Yeah, I think that history though is part of why you pick him now several years later. He missed a very big penalty and since has won the European Championship four times.

No, he’s won the European Championship once, he’s won the Champions League 4 times. :)

Oops -- yeah, of course. And the one he won was perhaps the most forgettable European final I can remember. (He's actually won five champions leagues, right? -- four after the 2008 miss for United though.)

That's the last time Ronaldo is giving up the ball on the counterattack this tournament.

The principle with VAR is that it's truly an assistant ref in the sense that it's just to be used as information by the head ref. If he saw the Costa play, he is free to say he doesn't care what the VAR says unless they give him information he didn't already have. At least I think that's the way it's supposed to go.

Unlike the goal-line technology which he regards as dispositive.

Just amazing how much better this game is than all the others.
There was a moment where Guedes was one on one early with a backpeddaling Ramos where I thought those 10 seconds alone were better than anything in the 270 minutes of World Cup that had come before combined.

Couldnt watch earlier, why did Uruguay struggle with Egypt? Is Saleh even fit?
Mo was on the bench, never warmed up. Hard to say if he's fit or not (I would guess not). Egypt was super disciplined at the back and Suarez missed three chances where he probably should have scored. Uruguay looked a bit unorganized.

Edit: Apparently Egypt's manager said Salah would be fine for the next match. For whatever that's worth.

If I'm coaching Egypt and Salah is iffy, I hold him out of this game too. They're most likely to lose the Uruguay game anyway - hold him out for Saudi and Russia if he's not yet ready to go.

How can you dislike Ronaldo? Especially in the World Cup. He's basically Lebron trying to pull a mediocre team through except the player pool for soccer is like 1000x larger than the player pool for basketball.

Similar to LeBron, imo if he continues his run on the Guedes chance, he’s there for the deflected shot instead of pouting

Yeah, that's a perfectly cromulent strategy. The in-game announcers made a good point as well, that maybe if they were down 1-0, they'd throw him on for the last 10-15 minutes to try and nick an equalizer. But because it was 0-0, they'd be more likely to give him some extra rest and simply try to hold on for the draw. Almost had it.

My thoughts are probably influenced as a Liverpool fan who is scared that he's rushing back to play too soon and possibly increasing his risk of re-injuring himself. Hopefully he's healthy and plays without any complications. He's a delight to watch out when he's out there.

I’m biased as a Portuguese but this Portugal team is too talented for the Lebron comparisons. He is the most talented by far but this is a solid team
