I like the officiating so far during the tournament. The players looking for the penalty instead of trying to score are not getting calls, it's a nice change.

A couple of the penalties were not the worst penalties I've ever seen but they were penalties IMO

Neymar is a pain in the ass. But watching teams kick him all over the field really is no good either.

That game was too physical to me.

I thought "will this be where Nemar stakes his claim to the Alfa in yellow" was a stupid statement until I saw him play that freekick in instead of shooting.

You want to be considered one of the best in the world you shoot that like Ronaldo and Messi both did.

Loved the physicality of the match and really all of the matches so far.

Edit: Probably because I played D growing up
The best matches of the tournament so far were Spain Portugal and Mexico Germany. This was a CONCACAFY rock fight that was boring to watch. What the Swiss did was effective but yuck. I actually found myself rooting for Neymar at the end which I would not have thought possible.

Hooray neat result but Yuck.

Brazil seem like they have a lot of work to do. Firmino is probably the better choice for them right now but it wasn’t striker play that let them down. That midfield just didn’t work and they were hopelessly one sided to Neymar’s side in the 1st half. Coutinho was nominally a b2b CM but had his legs on the touch line half the time while Paulinho dragged himself over as well.

It’s late in the game to mess with formation but I’d probably just double pivot Fernandinho and casemiro or Paulinho instead of Fernandinho. Frees up Coutinho behind a striker or even Neymar could play there. They probably tried this and it didn’t work but they will need to improve a lot to win this tournament

Lalas losing his shit that Neymar was getting fouled too much/too hard and the refs didn't protect him.

I only caught the last 20 minutes and it looked like a lot of flopping to me. How legit is this take? DDB agrees with Lalas. What say you all?

Brazil didn’t look great but what a cynical game from the Swiss. Their play was worthy of Concacaf. No interest in anything but mugging anyone in a yellow shirt. No chance for a pretty game when one team plays like that. Can’t wait for another 16 teams running the same strategy in 2026.

Neymar goes down to all contact. They were running into him but imo most players in world football ride many of those challenges. He plays for every free kick which would make more sense if he didn’t take ones like the lousy one go took in this match

I don’t like the idea of “protecting” him like he deserves to be treated differently but man, those plays where they just get to kick him two seconds after he releases the ball seem like they should be yellows.

Agreed but not sure who will look good against such a strategy. Up to the ref to take control and he failed. Utterly.

He gave out several cards but the Swiss were just undeterred and were prepared to take the cards and substitute as needed. Nothing they did was worthy of a red. Not sure what you do. Maybe start pulling yellows on everything. That doesn’t make a good game either. It’s too bad the Swiss came out like this.

Even though it was advantage played, the shirt pull in the first couple of minutes should have been a yellow I thought. Set the tone.

What a gutless performance from Brazil. Tite reverted back to "empaTite" (empate meaning tie in portuguese), there was no reason to stop pressing and basically concede the midfield to Switzerland so soon after going up 1-0. Then came a series of blunders after the tie, including taking Paulinho off the pitch (a guy whose only worth is being a physical presence in the box in a game where you clearly lack the ability to build up chances), subbing on Renato Augusto (who has absolutely no close up dribbling skills or the capacity to be a goal scoring threat, rendering him meaningless against a well positioned, physical defense). You just can't finish a game like that with Douglas Costa on the bench, especially when Neymar was clearly a shadow of himself. They took their foot off the gas way too soon and then looked completely befuddled after the tie.

Also, Neymar was hunted from minute one and a good ref would let the Swiss players know he wouldn't tolerate them taking turns hacking at him in pretty much every single run he made.

The Swiss were chippy but if you can’t overcome that strategy you aren’t much of a top side. Brazil failed to generate much offense because they couldn’t control the match in midfield, not because they got fouled a lot.

He had opportunities to give a second yellow that he chose not to take. He was scared to give a "soft" red but when a team's entire strategy is to commit as many fouls as possible because they know you don't want to give a red sometimes you have to bite the bullet and do it.

This is exactly right. This is the World Cup, every team will give Brazil their best and do whatever it takes to win. Be conscious of that and try to come up with alternatives, whining is silly. The team has the players to break down that sort of defense, they just couldn't execute and looked completely out of sorts when attempting to build up play. That's on the Tite. Odds are Brazil won't face many wide open sides this World Cup, gotta create chances against tight defenses.

I agree with the bolded part. Brazil needed to keep up the pressure and would have benefited from keeping the game in Switzerland's half. Yes, the Swiss played an ugly match, in part aided by the lenient calls, but that doesn't excuse Brazil from playing a more passive strategy.

Rookie move if bosoxen didn't take tomorrow off
If he hadn’t ahead of time do you pull the old cough cough not feeling well routine or say fuck it and own it
Oh, ye of little faith! Obviously I didn't anticipate today's result so I didn't take tomorrow off but I was planning on saving that bullet for the Sweden game anyway. Since that game will be in the middle of the work day, I will be working on arrangements with my boss so my coworkers and I can take a couple hours to watch that game off site.

The nice thing about the early game is that I'm already on the upswing so I should be good to go for work tomorrow.
