Don't listen to the Rays broadcast. Bitchfest about the doubleheader.

What's their theoretical problem with it?

That the players get a say in whether or not makeup games are played as a double header, except in cases involving the Red Sox at Fenway or the Cubs at Wrigley.  Those teams get veto power over player desires, and guess who exercised that veto power to get this game played now instead of September?

Ahh.  Why do the Wrigley/Fenway exceptions exist?  Are they grandfathered in from an old rule?

What I wondered is why they didn't want to play it today, not why they ended up having to play it. They came here to play 3 games, so they had the starting pitchers ready to play 3 games, they have an extra roster spot for the night game and plenty of time to get someone here in time to use it for whatever they want, the original game today was already a night game so they're not stuck here any longer than they would have been, they only have to travel to NY for a night game tomorrow, and they're off on Monday so they won't need an extra SP. It's almost as close as you're ever going to get to a good time for them to make up a rainout.

Because they're playing kinda shitty and their pen is blown and F-U-U-C-K sitting around all day in the Fenway vositor's clubhouse.

I guess, it just seems like most scenarios for making up a game involve worse things, like extra travel, losing a day off, relievers who had to pitch the day before, and needing an extra starting pitcher when you don't have a scheduled day off in 3 days.

Really, REALLY don't want to get swept by the Blue Jays, after getting swept by the Tigers.  Ugh.

I have a "day baseball"-related question.  I was under the impression, until recently, that the Red Sox' annual Patriots Day game is the only A.M. start of the MLB season.  However, I've heard that isn't true this year, but can't quite recall the team or situation in which they played in the morning.  Are there other A.M. starts during the season?  Has this been going on for a while or is it new?  Just kinda curious.

The Nationals had an 11am game on July 4 this year.  My assumption is they were getting the game out of the way early in the day to free up the day and alleviate traffic concerns for the parades and fireworks and whatnot.  No idea if it's something they've done before or not.

From the CBA:

  • (6) Day games shall not be scheduled or (unless necessary to
complete the championship schedule) rescheduled to start before
1 P.M., except as provided in paragraph (7) below, and except that
such games may be scheduled or rescheduled to start between Noon
and 1 P.M., if each Club meets one of the following two conditions:
    (a) if an off-day occurred the previous day; or
    (b) if a game were played in the same city within the previous
    24 hours.
Day games may be scheduled or rescheduled to start between Noon
and 1 P.M. on holidays if each Club meets one of the above conditions
or if an afternoon game starting not later than 5 P.M. or a doubleheader
starting not later than 1:30 P.M. was played in another city
the previous day and the travel time required in-flight is 11/2 hours
    or less.
    (7) With the approval of the Commissioner, not more than 4
games per League per year may be scheduled or rescheduled to start
between 10:30 A.M. and Noon, if, with respect to both Clubs, the
conditions stated in paragraph (6) above with respect to scheduling
and rescheduling of day games between Noon and l P.M. are met.

quick, somebody send out a search party for Tom Ricardo, I think they got to him in the middle of him typing that post. :)

Interesting.  So there's a CBA right to schedule up to 4 A.M. games, so long as they don't create travel / rest problems for the teams.  So, how often do they do this?  A little googling shows that they moved a Rangers game at the end of the season up to 11am last year to avoid expected violent storms, and the Twins occasionally had to do A.M. starts on Saturdays when they were in the metrodome and a Minnesota Gophers football game was in the afternoon.  But nothing pre-scheduled, other than the Patriots' Day game.
