Just call a cab for fuck's sake. Or just go to jail instead, good decision.

Does that NFL service where players can call a car service 24/7 still operate during the offseason?

Just no excuse, and really shitty timing too.

On a more serious note:  what does this mean for his parole?

Solid half season as a starter for a seventh round pick.  Not bad.

He probably will be cut by the end of the day.

This is the end of the Patriots taking questionable character guys going forward. With Hernandez and Dennard time to get back to the no a-holes on this roster mentality.

More power to them if they can be the first team in the league to field a roster without a questionable character guy.

Dennard hasnt ruined his life yet.  He'll get another chance in the league.  Hopefully he takes the upcoming release as a wake up call.

What a fool. After everything with Hernandez you would think Dennard realizes he needed to keep his nose clean. So dumb not to take a cab.

We can take another ride on the Will Allen or Antwaun Molden train.

Most likely we'll need Dowling or Logan Ryan to step up.

They could also move McCourty back to corner.

This sucks, but I think they have enough on the roster to cover this without outside help.

This was his lawyer after his sentencing in April:

“What he has to do now is abide by the terms of the probation, and the reason I asked the question about whether we can go back in March and ask her to consider an additional suspension of the sentence and perhaps not ever actually have him serve the 30 days was to let the judge know that I think he’s going to do fine and she ought to take that into consideration.”

Yeah, good luck with that.

So for us non-lawyers out there: he'll be arraigned for his DUI arrest, during which time the fact that he was on probation will come up and lead to, what exactly?  Is he looking at being thrown behind bars before the summer's end?

I realize that emotions are running high right about now, but the "time to cut him" stuff seems a but premature, no?  Or is it pretty much a given he will be behind bars (or suspended by Roger) this season?

Sucks too because I dont think Talib is getting a long-term deal here given his character issues, so the team already was going to have to replace a starting corner next offseason.

I think Id move McCourty back to corner permanently at this point.

Personally, I hope they give Dennard the death penalty to get him off the streets.

He's facing a suspension and prison, but even if he wasn't he'd be gone.  He's a useful but ultimately replaceable entity who essentially just took a big dump on the desk of the man who writes the checks.  If he's on the team by sundown I'll be surprised, if he's here when the season starts I'll be floored.

Actually, one of the pearl clutchers in this thread wouldn't care if Talib were cut along with Dennard...get some good God-firren men on this football squad.

I disagree.  I say that they should go the other way here.

Go for the full heel turn.  I'm talking '90s Cowboys, The U in it's heydey, Jail-Blazers, those types of situations.  Just go for it.

He's going to jail because this is undoubtedly going to be a parole violation. He's not good enough to put up with this shit.

Well yea, Hernandez and Dennard are gone.  But they can complete the heel turn by bringing in other criminals.  Duhhhhhh.

That would obviously be a gross overreaction, but they won't give him long-term money and they probably shouldnt.

Off topic but I believe the Pats offered Talib more years, but he opted for the 1 year deal so he could try and cash in again.

Not the point I'm making. I'll try another question.

If Aaron Hernandez doesn't turn out to be a Tony Montana wannabe, how many people would want Dennard cut right now?

It's silly.

I think that's where the Hernandez stuff is going to change how the Pats do business a little bit.  I think its unlikely guys like Talib are going to get long-term deals here unless they come way, way below market.

He'd be getting cut even if the Hernandez stuff didnt happen.  That stuff just makes it close to a mortal lock.

Im not advocating fielding a team of choir boys.  In this case though, given the totality of the circumstances, its an easy cut.  If the reports are true, the player is not going to be available to the team for most or all of the season and didnt have enough discipline to keep his nose clean after being put on probation.  Thats not even mentioning the Hernandez stuff and what Bob Kraft said three days ago.

I hope they don't cut him. There are enough question marks on this team right now. He made an unbelievably idiotic decision, but it's not worth booting him off the team.

Context matters.  Assuming he was over the limit:

1.  He'll probably be sent to jail by the judge who sentenced him on the assault conviction.  How long?  Three months is my guess.

2.  Dodge that bullet and he may well go to jail if found guilty on this charge.  Prior conviction is an aggravating factor.

3.  We're looking at a suspension by Goodell.  Four games would be my guess, maybe more, and that would take effect after he is out of the can, if he is sent to the can.

All in all, busted season for him.  Why keep him around?  Cause a corner may go down in December?

And this is wholly apart from any messages that Kraft or BB may want to send.

They drafted him after hitting a cop, they aren't going to cut him with a DUI. And he hasn't been arraigned yet so the "reports" from an arrest that happened 7 hours ago are pure conjecture.

Ordinarily, Damond Smith of South Alabama could be an interesting candidate for a supplemental draft pick...but for his getting in fights with his teammates and getting booted off South Alabama...

http://www.nepatriotsdraft.com/2013/07/scouting-report-cb-damond-smith-south-alabama.html#more-25628

Has ideal size for the outside in the NFL. Athletically, also stands out for his speed, agility, and acceleration; looks very fluid and explosive in man coverage, holding his own against the FBS competition at Western Michigan as a freshman and sophomore.

However...

Transferred to South Alabama from Western Michigan after the 2010 season; got into a fight with a teammate, which led to the loss of his starting role. Played in just four games for South Alabama in 2011 before being suspended for “a violation of team and departmental rules.”

Yeah, that's what I was getting at.  If he winds up in prison for the season then I can see cutting ties.  But I don't see the value in "trying to get ahead" of this by releasing him now.  He's not suspected of murder here.

But maybe I'm slightly biased

Hitting the cop was one incident where there was some confusion about what actually happened and where Dennard could somewhat credibly say he learned from his mistake.

Now there may have been a second incident, while on probation, and one that is going to make him unavailable to the team (if he was driving under the influence)

The situation has changed.

Prepare to be disappointed, he's getting cut.
