#DFG: Canceling the Noise

Is there any level of suspension that you would advise Tom to accept?

Very reasonable ESPN panel addressing the Brady statement, including Yates and a very good Brian Dawkins.

I like to wear my Pats t-shirt because it now serves two purposes. First, and most importantly, it lets the world know I'm a Pat fan. But now, on top of that it is an excellent idiot/cry baby detector. When someone makes a "deflate gate" comment I just smile.

Thumbs up to Stacey James for making TB available on ordinary QB's day with little advance notice, in front of his locker. And to TB for handlig the questions beautifully.

Now just tell NBC that Al Michaels is fine, but Florio needs to be swapped in for Collinsworth.

Got 2. I feel like the most irrational fans about this are Steeler fans. I love how they talk about "karma" and it will come back to get him... and when I ask about their QB's, they shut up quite quickly.

Look, the Patriots are like the Yankees of the NFL. Everyone who's not a fan wants to take them down. Just be thankful we don't have a SIAS and that parity exists. It's enough. Who gives a shit what others think, particularly sports writers who masquerade as journalists.

The only vendetta I'm interested in is the one that takes down New England writers who jumped on the bandwagon based on absolutely no accurate information, but only to increase their profiles. If I still lived there, I'd find a way to boycott their employers or some other means of showing displeasure that could impact the employer's bottom line. It's one thing to hire hacks, it's another to publish their hackdom and make money off of us.

“Just felt like the league had done something without … I guess it was just more of a feeling, an inkling, of knowing that the commissioner jumped to a pretty harsh punishment,” Roethlisberger told New England reporters on a conference call Sunday morning.
“I still have a ton of respect for Tom. I think he’s the best in the business. If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best,” he said. “Of course, one part of you doesn’t want him out there, because he is the best in the world. A bigger part of you as a competitor wants him out there because he is the best.”

“It’s going to be electric. Especially having Tom out here, and just everything that’s going to happen, it’s going to be awesome,” he said.
“It’s the way that NFL football should start, and that’s maybe one of the reasons I knew that Tom would be out there, because I knew the NFL doesn’t want to start a game without him out there. Nerves will be running, jitters will be running for everybody. For young guys, I think it’s fun that they get to experience this, and even old guys like myself, I’m sure I’ll be nervous.”

Big Ben just said he figured TB would be there Thursday, because the League wants him on the field. Huh?
Reading the link E5 just posted, it doesn't sound nearly as bad as this, to be honest.

What i can't wrap my head around, though, is how so many people in this country don't understand that Berman overturning the suspension does not equal the NFL putting Brady back on the field.

How dare he! Wait, what?

We really should be careful, in this thread of all places, about misquoting someone.

Looks to me like Ben was about to go somewhere with regards to Goodell and caught himself at the last moment. Smartest thing he's ever done, not that we're dealing with a high bar...

There are a couple of Steeler sites that I checked on time and again as this foolishness unfolded. Somewhat amazingly, they consistently advised fans to expect to see TB week 1. And they expressed the view that this whole thing is stupid and overdone.

considering the mess with Roethlisberger, lieutenant Kearney, etc. the Steelers are in a tenuous position.

I hear you both. Personally, it's just much easier to laugh and brush it off when friends and acquaintances are trolling than when national/local types are trolling. For the latter, 75% of the readers thinks it's serious journalism and believes most every word. For many, it might be one of the only writers they ever get their news from or one of the few articles they ever read on the subject. Yeah, it's still a waste of time and energy to get ticked off about it but nothing about the entire experience of being a sports fan is rational to begin with.

This is fair.

That said, this whole overblown story was concocted and pushed along not only because the trolling media got clicks and views from the frothing non-Patriots and Patriots fans alike but also because the NFL benefitted from having a silly scandal eclipse the real hard issues (CTE, off-field player misconduct) that the league would prefer be swept under the rug.  Regardless of your slant, if you are all caught up in #DFG, you are simply playing the league and the media's game.

Along the way, many have asked how happy the owners  are given what Goodell has spent on this whole mess.  I would argue that it was probably the most effective PR campaign that five million dollars can buy.

Yeah, I retract my previous sarcastic joke. That's one of the more respectable answers I've seen from an active player.

Literally just did the experiment for my Steeler fan friends to shut them up. I have an official football, measured it in my house, temperature 74 degrees (12.85 PSI), and put it in a fridge (temp set at 40) with some wet paper towels and waited 2 hours. Took it out with them there. PSI? Down to 10.75 PSI. They were shocked. I still can't believe people (these are allegedly smart people, doctors) that still didn't believe this and actually started to wonder at that point why the NFL would keep pursuing this.

Why haven't the Patriots done this and put it on their website? Seems easy enough.

If I'm Brady, when I do give my sit-down interview, I am demanding this is part of it. I'd also want JJ and McNally to get their say, as well.

I mean it's not rocket science by any means. It's amazing how many NFL fans just say "whatever, they cheat" instead of looking into the facts of the case.

Because only Pat fans go to the Pat's website.

The Pats should have the AEI guys run the Fridge experiment, tape it, and then run a 30-60 second public service announcement, PHYSICS ALWAYZ WORKZ, before every NFL national game.

Pats fans go there regularly, but if they had put it on their site and had Reiss/Florio/Wetzel/King etc. report it, plenty of people would have looked. Not everyone, but probably a decent amount. Kraft's PR on this has been a disaster, quite frankly. I would have had a neutral scientist tape an experiment and had it up on Patriots.com within a few days.

Just ordered a football and a gauge on amazon. Totally plan to do this for my Facebook mouth breathing friends.

“@TomPelissero: Jonathan Kraft said on radio last week #Patriots would talk to NFL about reinstating Jastremski/McNally. Per league, no request made yet.”

Kraft said it Thursday night FFS. There's been one weekday heading into a long weekend, and there's probably some lawyer work to be done.

Does the NFL have the right to approve all hires by teams?

These guys were iced for reasons unknown, and longer than the Browns GM who actually broke NFL rules, why shouldn't they be allowed back to work?

He couldn't have been more complimentary.
I meant it was the opposite of the league putting Brady back out there because they didn't want to kick off a season without him.

Rothlisberger was being complimentary.  But that part of the statement just doesn't make any sense.  :)

Beat me to it. As much as Berman was shooting for a decision last week, it was not a lock to happen.

I am aware that he testified under oath at the arbitration. I am also aware that the transcript of that testimony was filed as an attachment to the Answer in the confirmation case. But he didn't testify under oath in federal court, no matter how "basically" correct Stephanie Stradley thinks Simmons was.

It strikes me that every opponent the Pats face this season will be asked the Deflategate questions. Rex, Jerrah and Irsay might be the most interesting responders

They trashed the League and RG. Enterprise entirely broken on this front. No credibility. Mocked "integrity" posture. Said "allegedly" with regard to TB's and team's misdeeds and trivialized them. None of this "innocence not proven" nonsense. Treated opinion as if it were vintage Mike Tyson uppercut.

Saunders, Ryan, Lupica and another guy whose name escapes me but was very good.

Obviously, hate blinded Rhoden was absent.
Thanks, DC. The fourth reporter's name escapes me too, and 10 minutes of Googling didn't help. Black guy, bald, not as controversial as Rhoden.

So there is no picture of them talking so they put a picture of Kraft talking to two other guys? And why would Berman be at the party?
