Is there any level of suspension that you would advise Tom to accept?

I'd love to see a sideline reporter try to go for broke in the look at me department and say, "Well, Ian, I didn't talk to any of the coaches because they usually don;t say anything of interest, but I did leave a football that I had inflated to 13 pounds before the game outside during the first half, and at halftime it measured 10.4 pounds. Back to you guys."

It will be Michelle Tafoya, since the game's on NBC ... and I could see her doing that

I think all these posts miss the point. Brushing aside the JJ and McNally stuff, the Pats were busted because the "difference in difference" was greater than the Colts. If all of the balls dropped the same as the Colts balls the Pats wouldn't have been busted. (Yes, I know the reason the difference in difference was greater was due to the time elapsed).

Right that too. The point is that the NFL doesn't dispute that the PSI should have dropped. So showing a football with dropping PSI this weekend would prove nothing as far as the NFL is concerned.

I would love to see them win a title and on the podium, with a billion or so people watching, when Goodell hands Kraft the trophy Kraft looks him in the eye and says "Roger, you stole our draft pick but you couldn't steal this trophy away from our players and our fans"

True.

But it might have an impact on casual fans.

The soundbyte was that the Patriots' balls deflated. A lot. And the Colts' balls were in range.

Most didn't get into the difference of the difference. Which is harder to explain without making people's eyes glaze over.

Casual fans just don't care. They don't want facts, they want their hate to be justified.

That ship has sailed.
This is it in a nutshell. Some of the most opinionated people I've talked to on the subject are people who haven't read 1 word of any of the reports, briefs, etc.

Isn't one of the female sideline reporters suing for wrongful termination because she's getting let go for being older than norm at the end of the year? Am I making this up? If not, can we find her contact info and make this happen?

My dream scenario is they take the trophy from RG and that's it. No handshake. No acknowledgement. No mini interview with Nantz. Take the trophy and leave the podium and go back down on the field with the rest of the team.

That's kinda what I had in mind.

And while SJH is quite possibly right about whether anyone gives a shit, I think the shit-giving needle moves a bit if its the Patriots playing in the playoff game where this happens. And quite possibly there are some announcers (using the term very generally) who feel that the league office abused them and were abetted by media stars like King and Mort. Never undestimate the power of petty jealousies among highly paid TV personalities to manifest themselves.

How highly paid do you think someone like Michelle Tafoya is? She probably makes a couple hundred grand a year, putting her right around the 50th percentile here at SoSH.

Chatted with an ESPN guy that did some work (protecting him for his sake at this point) on the "new" Spygate piece from a couple months ago. Said it was supposed to be anti-Goodell. Pressed him on it some more and, yeah, he and his team had minimal control on how it was presented. Seemed to be a very rational person which just annoys me even more that this is/was a story.

Also asked two smart, rational, "good sports following" friends what Spygate was about. They were shocked to learn it was about taping signals at the wrong spot and that taping signals is still legal. Legitimate shock and surprise.

And plenty of people are still convinced that the Pats won their first three super bowls because they were cheating by stealing signals when in fact there weren't even any rules about the location of cameras during that time frame. The narrative is firmly set in stone. It is what it is.

Well if the report is true.. doesn't this give the CBS a reason to ask for the PSI of the balls that are coming out of the game at half time? If nothing more it should matter to the Seahawks fans if they are using the same balls all game. If Min is thinking about PSI, so should the Seahawks. Unless of course RW likes his balls softer :)

There are two false premises in that planted story:
  1. That extreme temperatures are necessary for footballs to fall under 12 PSI. (In actual fact, the balls inflated to 12.5 PSI should fall under 11 PSI at this temperature.)
  2. The NFL believes that footballs under 12 PSI represents a threat to competitive integrity.
Both premises are designed to subtly reinforce the contention that the Pats cheated.

The NFL really is run by a bunch of unethical fuckers.

I'm waiting to hear about the PSI from yesterday's game, poised to bitch either about them NOT RELEASING THE NUMBERS or RELEASING NUMBERS that are clearly cooked/offered up without context (timing of tests, location of original inflation, etc...)

Come on, 345 Park Ave.! My righteous indignation is champing at the bit.

Moving the needle won't give the Pats the picks back. Only a full-scale usurpation of Goodell and his jackass ex-Jet cronies in the NFL offices might provide some sort of relief.

And we should be hearing about the three judge panel in a couple of weeks. Keep your fingers crossed for some labor friendly judges.

From Florio:
The league has not yet committed to making any of the PSI information public. However, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that the league may be releasing a summary of the data between the conference title games and the Super Bowl.

The thought of cherrypicked summary data being released terrifies me - only way I see it being released is if it has been manipulated to support the NFL/media circus.

So basically if the Pats beat Denver the league will try to distract the Pats (again) leading up to the Super Bowl.

If Denver wins my guess is the league releases the results in the week leading up to the draft to "prove" they were right to take the first round pick

I get a flat the other night. Fancy car has balance light that shows all four tires tire pressure and damn it now if the back rear tire says 1. Others 30 or 31.Long story short eventually tire replaced.

Sunday morning very cold here in NJ and I decide to check pressure to see if they filled the new tire right.

Over-inflated it to 35 PSI but ALAS the other tires were now 28 PSI. Hmmmmm.

I never even knew the car had this gizmo - I'm yelling out the window: IDEAL GAS LAW, assholes!!!!

Took some air out of the back tire. Drove a while / pressure up to 31 PSI. Science is real!!! Tires heated up / air pressure went up.

All my Patriot despising friends are sick of this story so I thought you all might like it. The last 2 days as you imagine they hate the Pats even more. Next week we hope they hate them even more if that's possible.

At this point, if they release some bullshit report during the playoffs and try to control the narrative a second year in a row, I'm betting money on the Patriots.

Great, a summary prepared by Exponent. Looking forward to it.
