So the Dodgers get to spread out the signing bonus over 5 years making his cap numbers approximately $11.35M per year for the first five, then drop to $5.75M that 6th year, right?

Oops, wrong sport.

Didn't they pass on signing Moncada because they wanted to wait until the new International signing period?

I don't think Olivera is subject to the international signing bonus pool rules as he's over 23 (he's 30).  Unlike Moncada, he got a big league deal subject to the luxury tax rules.

Where is he going to play? Will Kendrick sit? Are they moving Olivera to the outfield? That team's bench is already busting at the gills with people who should probably be on the field. This seems odd from both the team's perspective and the player's. I mean, if 62.5 million was the best offer by more than a marginal amount, and Olivera decided that the money was more important than immediate playing time, sure, it makes sense to sign with the Dodgers, It'll be interesting to see what other kinds of offers he got.

And I suppose they can start Olivera in the minors and work to clear some roster space with a trade, or wait for an injury or poor performance to open up a spot. Still, that's a lot of money for a guy who doesn't really have a position to play.

What? Rusney, who?

Not only does he not have a position to play but he is also 30 years old and had major medical issues...not saying he can't perform well, but he is not exactly jose abreu

Not funny if you're a TWC subscriber.

Why? TWC subscribers still get to see the games in the Los Angeles area.

Or are you saying that TWC subscribers got screwed by $5 per month (all year, or just in season?), when the articles mentions that the value is more around $3 per month.

Olivera's contract contains a "John Lackey" clause that adds a seventh year at $1M to the contract if he needs Tommy John surgery during the length of the deal.

The $5 per subscriber is what TWC wants to charge cable companies in LA to carry SportsNet LA, the exclusive carrier of Dodger games in LA. None of those companies want to pay TWC for the privilege of carrying their channel. As a result, about 70% of people in LA don't get to watch the Dodgers.

I live in Western Mass but when my cable provider might potentially lose a billion dollars on just ONE deal I'm fearful that there may be a slight possibility that the incredibly low and stable prices that I've long enjoyed for their services may go up by a few pennies.

Does everybody in greater LA have the Angels on cable/satellite?

Let's be clear that TWC will not be losing one billion dollars, they will be losing one billion dollars of revenue. I assume, based on the fact that they paid nearly $9bn for it, that they will be making a profit on the deal. I'm sure their margins on this deal are greater than 10% or so.
