And people make fun of Belichick's penchant for statements like "we don't comment on players not on our team," but it comes in handy in situations like this. He doesn't burn a lot of bridges.Soxy Brown said:It probably didn't take much to bury the hatchet and move on. I mean, Revis called Belichick a jerk on national TV and they didn't seem to have a problem moving past it. Besides, I always thought Spikes's jabs towards the Pats were more of the tongue-in-cheek variety than anything truly malicious and angry. For all the talk about how Belichick famously holds grudges, he also seems like the kind of guy who can take a joke and correctly parse intent.

Maybe. But I think he thought Welker was reaching his expiration date. (I know I did, as the hits piled up, and the drops increased from "never" to "not-never"). BB has always been "let them go a year too soon, not a year too late" GM.TheoShmeo said:
That said, I'd love to know more about what lead to Welker's departure. It's not clear to me that there wasn't a personal element there.

I also wonder if it's, in part, an effort by BB to manage Brady's habits. Brady can get locked in to certain receivers; the ones that he trusts the most. Usually, that trust is well deserved, but sometimes it can come at the expense of creating a more balanced (and hence, less easily predicted) offense. Of course there's a chicken-and-the-egg thing going on with the talent of the receiver and how much trust Brady gives him, but with Welker, I wonder if BB just thought that his talent no longer supported the amount of attention Brady would give him if he was still on the team, and that Brady needing to struggle a bit with becoming comfortable with new receivers was best for the offense moving forward, even if it meant a slight step back for a few games.
That's one reason I never took those "Brady is mad at BB!" reports/comments too seriously. BB's relationship with Brady is more complicated than "Give him receivers he likes and everything will be ok!"
http://www.myfoxboston.com/story/29259637/car-registered-to-patriots-player-found-on-highway-after-reported-crash?utm_content=news&utm_campaign=Socialflow+Twitter&utm_source=socialflow&utm_medium=twitter(MyFoxBoston.com) -- A car registered to New England Patriots player Brandon Spikes was found abandoned on the highway early Sunday, according to Massachusetts State Police.
At around 3:20 a.m., the in-vehicle system OnStar called state police to request a tow after reporting the car hit a deer on I-495 north near Exit 14, which is around Wrentham and North Attleboro. On the scene, police found an unattended Maybach registered to Spikes. No driver was found.
Additionally, at around the same time in the same area, a 2009 Nissan Murano SUV was reported hit. It is unclear what hit the car, a state police official said, but three people in that car were taken to the hospital.
State police continue to investigate both incidents and on Sunday afternoon were looking into if the incidents were related or not.

What a moron, though fleeing the scene may have helped him out a bit. I would think he's still cut, being a fringe guy and with BB apparently having already had a sit-down meeting with the guy over past issues.
In addition, Procopio said a short time later that police responded to a report of a 2009 Nissan Murano, also on I-495 in the same area as the abandoned car registered to Spikes, whose occupants reported that they had been rear-ended by another vehicle they did not see.
Yeah dude, that's not the accident scene. So probably good that you're not a detective.BoredViewer said:"State police continue to investigate both incidents and on Sunday afternoon were looking into if the incidents were related or not."
Those 2 cars appear to be touching.
Full disclosure - I'm not a detective.
It's even stupider when you consider this...a friend of a friend went home with a Pats player two weeks ago. She has no idea what town they ended up, but knew they had a car drive them there, she assumed it was an uber. The next day, she was like...so I guess I'll call an uber and he says, oh don't worry about it, we have 5 drivers on call 24/7 for stuff like last night and to take you home today.fairlee76 said:Love the thread title change. Nothing else to say about pro athletes who are too stupid to hire a driver on the nights they want to go out and get hammered.
PC Drunken Friar said:She talked to the driver on the way home and they all sign strict NDAs and are used all the time. Most, if not every team (it might even be thru the NFL?) have these services.

Need a ride to the new club on the west side of town?
Just call the 1-800 number on the back of your NFL player I.D. card. The NFL Players Association will provide a chauffeured car to take you wherever and whenever -- that's 24/7/365 -- you need to go.
