I like this a lot.  Spikes knows the system, was often quite effective and had some very good moments, and I like the idea of him as a back-up and as insurance for Hightower and Mayo (coming back from injury and frequently hurt).

I would have liked Fletcher, too.

Like that comparison. He's basically the LB version of Chung, right?

Similar stories in a lot of ways.  Not quite as much of an opportunity for Spikes if everyone is healthy (knock on wood).  Just like he was an asset on his rookie deal for his limited role, he should be an asset for what should be vet minimum type deal

With the shift in focus on the line - primarily Wilfork being gone - they need guys like Spikes who are adept at stuffing the run.

Also, the idea of a Collins/Spikes duo crashing the line and blitzing out of the 3-4 has me shitting my pants, and I'm not playing opposite them. It may only happen 1-2 times a game, but both of these guys are very, very good at timing their blitzes.

Hoo-hoo-hoo hoosier land.
Plus, he hits like a fucking mule kick.

Really like him as a situational player. He may be a flake off the field, but he played his ass off on it, and adds an intimidation factor that is otherwise lacking in this group. Just don't want him trying to cover LeSean McCoy out of the backfield.

I'm not nearly as surprised about this as others are.  Belichick has openly acknowledged the fact that he's a difficult coach to play for and that he demands a lot of his players.  It's not like Spikes was breaking new ground by pointing that out.

As for Spikes, it seems like he realized the grass isn't always greener on the other side.  Being freed from the shackles of Belichick may have been liberating at first, but then you realize that some of the things you despised about your job were also some of the reasons why you won so many games there.

It probably didn't take much to bury the hatchet and move on. I mean, Revis called Belichick a jerk on national TV and they didn't seem to have a problem moving past it.  Besides, I always thought Spikes's jabs towards the Pats were more of the tongue-in-cheek variety than anything truly malicious and angry.  For all the talk about how Belichick famously holds grudges, he also seems like the kind of guy who can take a joke and correctly parse intent.

And people make fun of Belichick's penchant for statements like "we don't comment on players not on our team," but it comes in handy in situations like this. He doesn't burn a lot of bridges.

Really like this signing as it plugs a hole with an LB run-stuffer and gives them some pretty terrific depth. With Hightower and Mayo coming back from surgeries, having Collins and Spikes makes things a lot more comfortable. Goalline run situations have to have gotten better this offseason (unless teams throw on them on 2nd and 1 from the GL which no team is dumb enough to do).

More than 15 years ago Michael Holley was a Boston Globe columnist. When Bob Kraft was seeking to hire BB, Holley wrote at least one hard hitting column urging "no", based on how things had played out in Cleveland and so forth. The column in retrospect could not be more wrong. But it was well written and decently reasoned.

A few years pass and BB grants Holley unprecedented year long access to the team. The result of that was "Patriot Reign."

BB does not suffer fools easily. But he recognizes talent and does not have thin skin.

Similarly, Revis said some unflattering things about BB before he joined the Pats.

Bill is obviously secure enough to let the analysis be about whether the player will help him win rather than anything on the personal side.

That said, I'd love to know more about what lead to Welker's departure.  It's not clear to me that there wasn't a personal element there.

Maybe. But I think he thought Welker was reaching his expiration date. (I know I did, as the hits piled up, and the drops increased from "never" to "not-never"). BB has always been "let them go a year too soon, not a year too late" GM.

I also wonder if it's, in part, an effort by BB to manage Brady's habits.  Brady can get locked in to certain receivers; the ones that he trusts the most.  Usually, that trust is well deserved, but sometimes it can come at the expense of creating a more balanced (and hence, less easily predicted) offense.   Of course there's a chicken-and-the-egg thing going on with the talent of the receiver and how much trust Brady gives him, but with Welker, I wonder if BB just thought that his talent no longer supported the amount of attention Brady would give him if he was still on the team, and that Brady needing to struggle a bit with becoming comfortable with new receivers was best for the offense moving forward, even if it meant a slight step back for a few games.

That's one reason I never took those "Brady is mad at BB!" reports/comments too seriously.  BB's relationship with Brady is more complicated than "Give him receivers he likes and everything will be ok!"

Could be that, too. To bring it back to the thread topic,  BB would be perfectly willing to cut Spikes in training camp if he thinks he can't do whatever job he has in mind for him.

(MyFoxBoston.com) -- A car registered to New England Patriots player Brandon Spikes was found abandoned on the highway early Sunday, according to Massachusetts State Police.

At around 3:20 a.m., the in-vehicle system OnStar called state police to request a tow after reporting the car hit a deer on I-495 north near Exit 14, which is around Wrentham and North Attleboro. On the scene, police found an unattended Maybach registered to Spikes. No driver was found.

Additionally, at around the same time in the same area, a 2009 Nissan Murano SUV was reported hit. It is unclear what hit the car, a state police official said, but three people in that car were taken to the hospital.

State police continue to investigate both incidents and on Sunday afternoon were looking into if the incidents were related or not.

Spikes knew he would be busted for DUI if he stuck around; so he fled.

I'm sure it's all just a coincidence.

What a moron, though fleeing the scene may have helped him out a bit. I would think he's still cut, being a fringe guy and with BB apparently having already had a sit-down meeting with the guy over past issues.

Yea if he was drunk and hurt someone, fleeing the scene is even worse. What a dick nut.

So, when is he cut? Tomorrow?

Those 2 cars appear to be touching.

Well, it's at least possible that the two incidents are unrelated...

In addition, Procopio said a short time later that police responded to a report of a 2009 Nissan Murano, also on I-495 in the same area as the abandoned car registered to Spikes, whose occupants reported that they had been rear-ended by another vehicle they did not see.

...but it's a pretty basic task of forensics to see if any paint from the Murano is on Spikes' car.  If the two cars are close by, then yeah, that lowers the odds of this just being a fine for abandoning the vehicle.  But the picture from Ted Daniel just shows two cars (in addition to Spikes') that I assume are the investigators', rather than being the Murano.  Or it could be at the tow lot, since this incident allegedly occurred on 495, and that damn sure isn't an interstate that they're on.

Yeah dude, that's not the accident scene. So probably good that you're not a detective.

Love the thread title change.  Nothing else to say about pro athletes who are too stupid to hire a driver on the nights they want to go out and get hammered.

It's even stupider when you consider this...a friend of a friend went home with a Pats player two weeks ago. She has no idea what town they ended up, but knew they had a car drive them there, she assumed it was an uber. The next day, she was like...so I guess I'll call an uber and he says, oh don't worry about it, we have 5 drivers on call 24/7 for stuff like last night and to take you home today.

She talked to the driver on the way home and they all sign strict NDAs and are used all the time. Most, if not every team (it might even be thru the NFL?) have these services.

Yep, it's offered through the NFLPA.

It's Friday night. You've got your crew and rolls of cash.

Need a ride to the new club on the west side of town?

Just call the 1-800 number on the back of your NFL player I.D. card. The NFL Players Association will provide a chauffeured car to take you wherever and whenever -- that's 24/7/365 -- you need to go.
