I know it's a case by case basis but all the drafted Meyer Florida kids were pretty much a disaster, I wonder what The Ohio State University Meyer and BB relationship is. We have some friends who are diehard Buckeyes and they love Meyer, I said sooner or later they will need a bigger jail in Columbus and that weaselly prick will hit the road.

I friend of mine was at a bar (I think he said Whiskey Priest, which would seem about on Spikes level of class)  at the same time as Spikes on Friday night and spent at least 5 minutes hectoring him about said Maybach. Somewhat prescient.

You're not kidding. I'm no car expert, but a quick search shows that that year's model goes for about $190K. I can't even imagine plonking down that much for a flippin' car unless you've got a net worth well into the eight figures. Spikes can't have that kind of scratch can he? Seems like the folks who buy something like that either have fuck you money or jackasses who think that having a bauble like somehow makes their dick bigger. The only guy I know who has one is a plaintiff PI lawyer who makes a crapload, but spends it all and is in debt up to his eyeballs.

Luxury car salesmen must laugh their ass off when some newbie pro comes in and drops a significant chunk of his signing bonus on something like this.

I just did a quick and dirty estimate of his salary and got about $5-6 million in gross earnings for his NFL career.

If you are making that kind of money and you want to party, hire a driver.

Cue braindead media commentary about how 'the Pats— increasingly conscious of their public image in the wake of #deflategate— wasted no time cutting Spikes', when in fact that was what they would have done in any off-season under Kraft's tenure. </bitter>

Turns out he doesn't just hit hard on the field...  Wasted physical abilities by bad decision making and a big mouth, too bad was looking forward to watching him, Collins, Hightower and Mayo crash down on the line this year.

Per that link the car service still costs the players money.  The cheapest option is $90 per hour so I can totally see players not wanting to utilize the service due to the cost.

The PTL has two offerings. Though the NFLPA assumes the administrative fees, the prearranged ride costs players $90 (including gratuity) per hour for a black limo sedan. The cost rises if a player chooses other vehicle options, including Escalades (the most popular choice), Hummers, stretch limos or a party bus. Players can pay with a credit card.

If you can drop six figures plus on a car and - like some of these guys do - run up bar bills in the thousands, it should be well worth it to spend a few hundy to keep shit like this from happening.

I know I'm just piling on here, but if what happened here was actually what it smells like, then good riddance to this chucklehead. Gronk gets labeled as a bonehead by some, but the party bus-man's a genius compared to Spikes.

Kidding, right?  I was an idiot and pretty broke in my early 20s (read - not buying a Maybach), but even I would have taken that deal (or found a friend to stay with in town) over driving hammered from downtown Boston to whatever suburb he was headed to.

From Belichick's standpoint, he had to be considering the strength of his own word with the other 89 players on the roster. He can't stand in front of the team, demand personal accountability, speak about the expected standard of what it means to be a Patriot, and then let something that doesn't reflect well on the franchise slide.

I guess the whole point of owning a Maybach is being able to roll up to the club in it.

Not excusing this massive stupidity, just trying to understand it.

Or he could do what the majority of people do and finance at the new car rate of 2.75%. Even with no down payment that is less than $3500/mo. It's not like Spikes had to cut a check for $200k.

Yeah, well, like I said, I'm no car expert. Maybe I just don't care about ostentatious displays of wealth, and if I had Spikes' career/earnings I'd want to live well, but not extravagently, and try to ensure that my family & I were set financially going forward. Whatever he was forking out for insurance, he might want to think about getting something a wee bit more modest when the check comes in. Or not.

42k a year on a car is way too much for a guy in Spike's position.

Based on the way he's behaving, Spikes may not be in it for the long haul... so, why not go for a $190k car?

He might have been speeding with his lights off too, based on the Murano folks never seeing the other car.

I sold Patriots RB John Stephens 2 Mazda 929s one memorable afternoon when I was scraping together post-college funds to move to NYC.  Route 1 in Norwood. Nice guy. He was good for a couple years—better than the 929.

That's too funny. My uncle was his agent and we dropped off my baby stuff to him after he was drafted for his own pending baby.

Not unless he sold him a truck as well:

SHREVEPORT -- John Stephens, the 1988 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year for the NFL's New England Patriots following a record-shattering career as a running back at Northwestern State, died Tuesday night in a one-vehicle accident in a rural area near Shreveport.

Stephens, a 43-year-old native of Springhill, apparently lost control of his truck on state Highway 169 near Pine Orchard about 8:30 Tuesday night, according to the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office.

I'm reminded of one of the best ledes in Patriot beat-writer history, about Irving Fryar's NE denouement, "First there was the knife in the kitchen.  Then the fork in the road."

Which is the equivalent of someone with the median wage paying 90 cents an hour if the NFL player is taking home $5MM.  On Spikes' budget deal, it's about $4/hour.

If Joe Schlub accountant chose to get hammered and drive instead of paying $4/hour for a personal driver, he'd be a goddamned idiot as well.

Yes, a friend of yours gave a 6'2" 255 NFL player shit about his car for five minutes. I believe you.

If I have that correctly, your baby stuff when to Sloane Stephens?

Edit - I think I'm wrong, she was born in 93 and has a few older siblings.
