I can't find another good player who had been negative each of the past 3 years? LaVine is the closest. Odd thing about LaVine is that he's been negative 6 of 8 years (& all 8 years his team has been outscored with him on the court).

Not sure if it means anything per se, but it's an interesting data point (to me).
The new DeRozan.

Heard on a pod today.

With Mitchell now in CLE, Mobley is not able to sign the rookie extension with them (Mitchell and Garland both are on those extensions - forgive me if I have that wrong). So they will have to go to free agency with Mobley unless one of those guys is gone.
Not quite accurate and ultimately not a big deal. Unless the rules change, Mobley will not be able to sign a designated rookie extension. All that means is the Cavs could only sign him to a four year extension, and not a five year extension. Alternatively, they can agree to wait until RESTRICTED free agency, at which point they can offer him a five year designated rookie deal (b/c Mitchell's will have ended by that point).

Over numerous seasons, on very good teams, it's very fair to be concerned about Dono's defense. BUT maybe a change of scenery/scheme makes a difference

Luka has also lagged the rest of the superstars +/- by a wide margin all 4 seasons.

As stated above adv defensive metrics are pretty rough
+/- over a season, especially from gifted offensive players, says something about their defense IMO

Yeah. Will be interesting to see if Luka significantly ups that # without Brunson.

There are definitely lineup effect noise in those things, too. The Mitchell on/Gobert off minutes are concerning, though, but not necessarily predictive.

This isn't really what I was looking for, but according to StatMuse, in 37 games Mitchell has played without Gobert, the Jazz have been outscored by 3 points with Mitchell on the court.

In 34 Gobert games without Mitchell, the Jazz have outscored their opponents by 366 points with Gobert on the court.

This is also not what I was looking for, but I find it pretty hilarious...

They will have to wait until the end of his fourth year, Mobley is going to make All D at least by then and will be eligible to sign a designated rookie extension. And getting him to sign on that dotted line is important to keeping him long term as that’s the 30% max deal.

The Designated Rookie Extension is about longer extensions, not the amount the player gets paid. There are no criteria that have to be hit to get a Designated Rookie extension. A Designated Rookie Extension allows a team to sign a player on a rookie scale contract to a 5 year extension in the final year of their rookie scale contract (instead of the four year max which otherwise applies). The exception exists so that guys on rookie scale deals would not be incentivized to go to free agency just to get the fifth year. Mobley would be eligible to sign his extension in the 2024 offseason. Mitchell and Garland being on the roster will prevent the Cavs from signing Mobley to a five year extension because teams are capped at 2 designated rookies. The Cavs and Mobley could still agree on a 4 year extension. Alternatively, in 2025 the Cavs could sign him to a five year contract as RFA (like the Pels did with Brandon Ingram).

The ability to pay 30% instead of 25% is the Rose Rule - which is separate though related. The Rose Rule does have criteria, which are:
  • The player was named to the All-NBA First, Second or Third team in the most recent season, or both of the two seasons that preceded the most recent season.
  • The player was named the Defensive Player of the Year in the most recent season, or both of the two seasons that preceded the most recent season.
  • The player was named the NBA Most Valuable Player in any of the three most recent seasons.
You can have a Designated Rookie Extension that also includes Rose Rule language - but you can have a shorter extension which also has Rose Rule provisions.
