Makes sense with it being in LA. I just don't see the Mary J angle. Oh wait.
Dre, Snoop + either/or Kendrick or Eminem should be enough. They better cover California Love, that's all I gotta say.
I still would have preferred RHCP, GN'R, and.or Metallica combo. Or frankly, a reunion of Mike Love and Brian Wilson (would never happen), who grew up basically walking distance away, if 105 is cross-able somewhere and you're street smart.

That's an HOF lineup right there. I'd think that any one of those performers would be good enough, especially Kendrick right now

a lot of football fans enjoy it -- much more than the suburban housewife demo that they've been targetting over the last 15 years
I love this lineup and am also just happy they didn't trot out another bullshit act like Black Eyed Peas / Maroon 5.
Should have stacked them in 2004 when they were all in their prime just to get all the controversy out of the way in one year.

I'll start:
Dre, Snoop, and Eminem (don't know about Lamar) have had run-ins with the law, and music that glorifies sexism, misogyny, and gang violence, sends a mixed message when there have been some high profile league incidents in recent years.
I don't have any issues with Mary J. Blige - she's a fine choice and a KILLER performer - and I don't know enough about Lamar to comment, but Dre, Snoop, and Eminem shouldn't be anywhere near a Super Bowl Halftime Show.
Other than Kendrick, it's also like seeing the Beach Boys in the 90s.
I mean, as a music fan it's better then what they normally do, but let's not pretend that it is current to anyone other than us 40 something white dudes.
I mean sure, the 20 somethings didn't grow up with them, but growing up I knew who Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and the Doors were.
Besides catering to the 30-40 something crowd with more disposable income, ya know the ones advertisers like, isn't a bad play.
I fn love this. Amazing lineup. Cant wait for the inevitable long pauses/mutes during Em's part of the performance.

Young people are extremely aware of those performers and are in some ways they are much larger figures than more contemporary acts.

But it's a nice reminder to us folks that even Snoop, etc, are straight up classic rock at this point.
The NFL isn't choosing them for 20 year olds.
I mean, the Rolling Stones performed at Super Bowl XL if you want to see "run-ins with the law". Besides "gang violence" I think you'd see your fair share of the other unsavory messages in much of popular music. Rock music just takes a more artistic approach to the language whereas rap music keeps it a little more raw and doesn't hide behind metaphors. Not that I'm jamming to a bunch of Eminem, but I think you'll find all musical genres have imperfect people.
I'm not worked up about it too hard, really. It'll be fun to see all the pearl-clutching in white America over this, and to see what they're going to get away with, and it's going to be a party, that's for sure. I'm surprised by this lineup more than anything else, and as I've discussed in that other thread, there are a bunch of really big names out there that haven't performed yet.

I’ll add that Snoop probably got away with murder, which the NFL seems to be okay with (Ray Lewis, come on down)!
On a separate note, bundling a bunch of the biggest acts in hip hop history seems like a sop. Honestly the only way it was going to happen I suppose.

The charges against Lewis and Snoop were both dubious. I doubt a similarly situated (i.e., wealthy) white man would have been charged in either case.

I think he’s suggesting that for 20-year-olds, this is their parents’ music and not relevant to them and are going to be a bunch of 50-year-olds performing. As someone in his mid-30s, I agree with this take, even though I’ll enjoy the shit out of it.
When is the Super Bowl halftime show aligned towards 20 year olds? Was it when Cold Play played? Or The Who? Or 70 year old Paul McCartney? Perhaps it was when 60 year old Bruce Springsteen played? And I'm still not sure why Spelunker thinks only 40 something white people have heard of Dre and Snoop and Mary J.

The year with Britney Spears, NSYNC and Nelly. Of course that had Aerosmith too. Think MTV produced that and there were a couple other “hybrids” like that until Timberlake-Jackson (thanks Patriots). Other than that brief period, probably never.
Thank you for reminding me of how I am, anyway this is first time that I can remember actually making a point to watch the halftime show this year since Paul McCartney in 2005.
In my small high school (600ish kids) I see at least 6 Tupac/Biggie/Snoop/Death Row t-shirts a day, if not more. Now, do they listen to the music? I can't say for sure, but the kids definitely know who they are.
