Gentlemen,

As we all know, injuries are random in training camp. We have had a significant number of rounds of drafting in a non-snake position based on our "record" last year. Since injuries are random and free agency in the NFL isn't done by where a team ended last year can we perhaps randomize this part of the process? I think drafting based on where we ended last year should run its course - like I said before even the NFL doesn't have all it's moves based on merit.

The solution? We can do this very quickly in excel on the group spreadsheet.

All we would need to do is appoint a time this weekend where 3 of us could get online at the same time, I make my formulas and bam, we're done and import it into RFP.

I know this is last minute - sorry for that.

Ok... let me try to figure that out...

How do I edit the poll to make it public? I can't find a public voting feature in the poll editor.

Yeah, sorry - I can't figure it out man. I'll need to wait until someone can walk me through it. Sorry - not trying to be lazy but I genuinely have no fucking clue what I'm doing here on SoSH editor.

Maybe SumnerH could help? I don't know how to do it either.

Can't change it now unless you start a new thread.

I'm voting no. Too meaningless and complicated. Need to worry about the IR, not this.

I get complicated but this isn't the trash talk thread. It's definitely not meaningless. I've had injuries too. Why shouldn't I have a fair shot at a decent pick to replace people?

As for complicated.... I'm free all day Sunday to go online and do this. Just need 2 people to be there with me. It's basic formulas man... not hard to do.

as for IR... i agree with you but that comes next in order of what we're actually doing bro. If you want to know how I'd vote on IR? I like the idea of releasing the guys you puck up during the year but you can IR guys if their real teams do it.

Well this is all dumb, but on the dumb scale needing to randomly complicate and vote on the 40th round of a fantasy league takes the cake.

For me it's not wether it's hard to create a new order, it's creating another page on the google document and all the extra clicking we're going to have to do in the off season. This page, that page, oh the other page with the random order. It's too complicated. This needs to be easy or people will lose interest. We can't even spell Joplo Bartu right.

Phragle, it's one additional sheet we'd use to determine draft order. We then switch the other sheets around for this round. We can delete the sheet after we're done switching the orders. We're not on the same page as to how easy this is and while I give deference to you on certain topics functioning like a pro in excel is my area of expertise ;). Hey - it's a swiss army knife - but it's MY swiss army knife. Again, you're looking at an hour at most of my time on a Sunday being used. The rest? 2 people and 5 minutes of their time to see the new draft order.

Just because it is round 40 doesn't mean it is irrelevant - a lot of us have starters to fill 40th pick or 1st, that makes it relevant.

Edit: I don't know if we can build macros in the sheet but if you wanted to randomize draft order for this round every year it could be done via macro very easily... I'm going to see what is possible on the gdoc.

Just an FYI but I put in a Sample draft order sheet in our spreadsheet. It doesn't impact anything - it isn't linked. I just want to show you what it would look like. F9 doesn't work but if you hit F5 it refreshes the page and therefore does the same thing. All you have to do is hit F5, then copy and past the values into the next column. You then set the rankings to be on the pasted values instead of the random number generating cells. I then, if I can, link the remaining pages and move the rows around to where they should be. If not I just move the rows around in the 3 sheets. Once again this would take me an hour tops.

You can also just use random.org/lists.  I'm fine randomizing but I don't think we need to.

I think the IR thing is pointless now that we have larger rosters.  It would have been great last year when we only had 5 subs but now we have 16+2 more after the supplemental draft. If we're going to do it I think it needs to be done prior to the week 1 Thursday game.

I just don't think it's worth any amount of time. I think it's a negative changing things all the time. There are plenty of owners that can't keep up with all the changes. Myt1, Laddie, Merlin, and others. They don't keep up with these threads. Just typing ten paragraphs with all these different scenarios seems crazy to me.

How many votes do we need to change something, 22?

I thought the point of the "comp committee" was to allow us to make decisions like these without a league vote.

EDIT: To clarify:
Since we never get quorum we decided on a group to lead and herd cats when necessary. We got 5 people who could take the input from the league and make the choices so we don't need 10 polls to make little changes.

Public voting allows votes from non-participants to be thrown out and to cut down the list of owners who need reminder PMs from the cat herders.

The sky is blue. Are you going to dispute that too or is just the shit you haven't thought through?

I voted no.  I'm in this camp.  And I owe Eck an apology for not getting back to him on his trade proposals.

No you don't. We haven't approved trades by vote so any proposals were just a waste of your time.

What the hell are you talking about? There were 19 yes votes because the 1 no vote by Dollar was rescinded. "WE" voted that it was a go. The finer points are the only things not worked out.

People don't come into these threads. JoeBlow ain't wasting his time.

This has more to do with you being able to shout "of course you people in the back of the draft feel that way!", which has been a Ripken-esque consistent shout from the same people for several months now.

Again, don't confuse this statement with me giving a shit. I didn't, and won't, vote. I just enjoy watching the same handful of people bully their way into the rules and league that will suit them best.

Carry on.

So to sum up: no one refutes it's not a fair idea but the answer is no because it's too hard to implement and for people to pay attention to the league their in? That and SSF wants to keep his #1 pick? I'm not getting much else. And in all honesty, if/when my team sucks this year and I get a high pick I fully expect we won't be changing to a random order in this round. If we're not doing it now we're not doing it ever. And in the unlikely, but not improbable, event that this comes up again, I'll merely vote based on how it helps me that year because that's in vogue.

Furthermore, and this, gentlemen, will be my last point, if we can't implement something as simple as changing a draft order we have some problems, right?

For me, I voted no because I just don't think it matters that much. If another team ends up picking at the beginning of this short draft that picked towards the end of the real draft are they really getting someone so much better than what else is available? Most of us are going to be picking up preseason MVPs who could end up being nothing more than filler by the end of the real season. This is implemented to round out your team with role players. Some of us will end up getting more than that but I don't think where we're drafting has anything to do with that. Hell, I picked up Danny Trevathan with almost the last pick in last years 5 round draft.

I think the order for both the regular and supplemental draft of a given season should be the same. New draft order should be determined at the conclusion of each season.

Ok, thanks. I appreciate that view point. I'd still like to see a change as I don't think everything should be tied to where we finished last year as injuries are random and the NFL has a nice balance of random (free agency) and fair (the draft) compensation. That system balances rewarding teams for good decision making and helps bad teams recover from their prior poor decision making. I like that it does both and I hope we implement a system that does as well for this league.

I voted that it should be random, because I thought it was already enough of a competitive balance advantage for last year's less successful teams to get the top picks in the stealing draft AND the post-season draft, in addition to neither of them being a snake draft order.

But I'm over it.  The difference between an early and late pick in that first draft (getting a Captain Munnerlyn/Roddy White instead of Eddie Royal/Doug Free, or a Khalil Mack/Jadaveon Clowney instead of Ja'Wuan James/Dee Ford) is much greater than the gap between the players we'll be picking up now.   On behalf of the teams who were successful last year, I'll just say it will make it that much sweeter when we repeat and go deep in the playoffs again this season.
