Posted in the defense thread but new threads are good, right?

Free-agent DT Lawrence Guy and the Patriots are working on finalizing a four-year deal for Guy to remain in New England — pending a physical — per sources.

I said it before but it's really starting to look like they're positioning themselves to trade a bunch of draft picks (presumably to move up in the first round to take a QB).

One of the more underrated players on the team. I didn't even realize he was on the All Decade team until two days ago when Reiss mentioned it. He didn't even come here until 2017. Geez.

This is fascinating. It makes me think that aside from the cap, most NFL teams have decided that money and finance are too tight to really spend this year and after twenty years of full stadiums playoffs shirt sales etc the Krafts are flush enough--and willing to spend enough to just scoop up players in a buyer friendly market.

I agree. On both counts.

I just texted my brother that I thought he was underrated over the last couple years, but his play suffered last year with no help around him. I expect him to be much better in a rotation like it looks like they will have this year.

I love this signing. Guy is an excellent dude and the kind of player I love to root for. He's overcome a lot, I am glad he is sticking around!

Great day today with White and Guy back in the fold!

Not sure I love a 4 year deal for 31 year old. Curious to see terms.
I'm guessing that when we see the details that it's going to be a 2 year deal structured very similarly to Wise's. The 3rd year will function as a high priced option and he'll never see the 4th.

What's the o/u on draft picks they actually use on selecting player?

Add me to the chorus that loves this signing and have been quietly hoping they would find a way to bring him back. Super underrated in my opinion, and from all accounts a great teammate that understands the system.

They are going to be so deep on the front 7 now. I’m old enough to remember when that was a big concern. . . . . .

Can somebody please clarify something for me? I was told "They Hate Their Coach".
I wonder if for some of these guys (e.g., DMC, Guy, White, Edelman) there's an element in their minds of "You know it wasn't all Brady, right?" in regard to both their own talents and BB's too.

Or just trade them all for higher 2022 draft picks. That would be almost funnier.

Would Coach pull a Ditka and trade the whole draft just to move up? If he does, the only advice would be to not do the dreadlock thing. That was in poor taste even back then.

Aside from the structure of the contract, linemen - both offensive and defensive - seem to peak later and are more consistent performers through their careers, as their primary skill (strength and technique) deteriorate slower than other positions that rely on speed.

Without posting all the links (easy enough to find via the google), one interesting quote regarding defensive lineman and age:

There's less volatility in the peak and more volatility in the average, and the production drop-off from year 12 to year 15 is swift and shocking.

After a defensive lineman's seventh year in the NFL, his time is very, very short. Look at the huge drop-off in qualifying starters from year seven to year eight, and from year nine to year 10. The decline flattens for a while, as the best defensive linemen can stick around a very long time, but the quick development, long plateau and quick decline is obvious.
So, your concern isn't unjustified. With defensive linemen, it seems like they're quality starters...until they're not. They kind of just fall off a Peyton Manning like cliff. The upcoming season for Guy will be his 10th. The quoted trend above seems to say, "If you can make it to year 10, you've proven you can rely on more than just talent to make it to year 12 - 15". But...who knows. One way or another, this is very likely Guy's last NFL contract.

I don’t quite understand that double asterisk. Is the $2m guaranteed now? Or is it that $1m becomes guaranteed on 3rd day of 2022 NFL year, and so it’s not guaranteed today?

and what is the cap hit? $1M/4 + $1.075 + some chunk of roster bonuses as they are LTBE?

I read that as the 1m is fully guaranteed. And if he lasts til the 3rd roster day next season his 2m salary for next season is guaranteed.
