Way too many years late, but I'll take it.

Kidding aside, amazing career, Mike.

I reckon the Brad Stevens not coaching this season news and this being leaked today are tied together.

Well, if/when he doesn't take this job, they will have run out of places where Brad Stevens is dying to leave Boston for.

How?

Do you think Stevens accepted a promotion only to leave in a year and coach Duke?

Because all news from other parts of the country MUST be tied to Boston teams. It falls under the "Player X Theorem": Play X (is a free agent)/(wants a trade) ... how can we get him to the Bruins/Celtics/Patriots/Red Sox?

That doesn't have anything to do with my post.

The teams he built at Butler align with how you have to win in college basketball right now - player development, have teams loaded with juniors and seniors, and keep a pipeline of them coming. He's a big name, which I think Duke would like to have, and they can afford to pay him.

So again, you think Stevens took the Boston promotion only to leave in a year to coach Duke? If Duke was where he really wanted to be, he knows Coach K is 74 years old and won't be coaching much longer. He would've just resigned or stayed on as just HC in Boston.

I think he should've retired several years ago, but he has the right to walk whenever he wants. I spent so many hours playing Coach K basketball in the mid 90s this makes me feel weird and old.

I guess I should say that all reports from both Jeff Goodman and Woj are it's going to be Scheyer, so I guess it's probably moot at this point, but yes I could have seen Brad taking a one year job in the Celtics front office to help them transition and then returning to coach at the college level, especially at a job of this prestige.

Fair enough. However Goodman and Woj both mentioned Scheyer in their initial tweets on this, and Duke knew this was coming before today (they also considered Amaker and Dawkins), which means if they had any interest in Stevens then Stevens would have known.

So no, in the end, there's no tying these things together.

So the Duke admin was wanting Amaker. Maybe K is right and he sees something after having Scheyer around for 8 years now, but him asking Amaker to leave Harvard to be an assistant for a year with the other candidate Scheyer sounds kind of shitty for both of them. Very "kiss the ring" of him. Now Scheyer as a first time head coach is going to be looking over his shoulder knowing he doesn't have total buy-in from the bosses.

As someone not a fan of Duke, can't say I feel too badly for them!

I mean, I'd rather have K's approval than the "admin's".

Fair that from a coaching standpoint having K's support is more important. Doesn't help him to keep the job any longer, though. What I'm more interested in is why the admin and K were on different pages. If I'm the AD or even the university president, I say "who do you want to take over for you, coach?"

Well, UNC definitely made the hoopla for Coach K's final home game far less exciting...except maybe the part when Coach K shit all over his current team in front of multiple alumni from Duke's best teams, all the Cameron Crazies, and anyone watching on ESPN.

I thought it was also very on-brand to see various undergraduates crying in the stands before the final whistle.

Amazing career that will never be seen again, but that was a massive thud for an ending.

The pressure on his young team is incredible. I don’t see them getting past the first weekend of the tourney. Especially when they miraculously get placed in the Chicago region. Obviously the farewell tour means more to K than a sixth title.
