Michael Silverman tweet - "Nunez was working on a $4M contract this year. He held an option for next year, also worth $4M, based on plate appearances, with a $2M buyout."

So, did they DFA him to save the $2m because of moves coming later? -edit, the saving is next year #headdesk
Occam's Razor---they DFA'd him because he's not a productive member of the team. In fairness he hit better than I thought with that fork in his back.

Thanks for the World Series jack, good luck and Godspeed.

It was fun while it lasted. He will still probably end up in Pawtucket.

First two steps seem to relate appropriately to performance, the last two (Weber and Travis) not so much.
Well, they need a new position player to replace Núñez, so that's why Travis.

Weber seems like he's probably up for the day and will be sent back down when Cashner is added to the roster tomorrow in advance of his planned start. No need to eat up the roster spot ahead of time and Weber gives them an extra arm for the day.

Our long regional nightmare is over but thanks for the PH 3-run HR and doing more than Kinsler to help the team win a title. World Series hero for life.

Edit: Some team will pick up Núñez for the league minimum when he gets released. No one is trading for him unless there's a really dumb GM out there who thinks he's enough of a "winning" player to bring him on and hope for the rest of the team to get the rub. Or some team that's tanking will need a body when they deal away a better player.

Not really sure I’d classify Sam Travis as a utility man since he’s never played anywhere other than first base and left field.

Cashner is already on the 25; he replaced Wright, who went to the IL.

But our long regional nightmare is indeed over.

Since Travis is on the shuttle, he's likely only around until they figure out a better solution to the RHH reserve situation

Nuñez was a fun player when healthy and he made one of the, I don’t know, top 20 or so most important defensive plays in Sox history, but this move is overdue.

Ah, right, I forgot about that. Weird to add him with no plans to use him immediately instead of getting a spare player as an emergency backup but I guess a day or two doesn't make a huge difference.

Is Nunie in the Lenny DiNardo class of going halfsies or does he warrant a full-size free pizza and Coke?

I think of this not so much as Nunez being a disaster as confirmation of the emergence of Marco Hernandez, who has been just fantastic since he was called up.

Nunez was clearly more popular with his manager and his teammates than he was with SoSH, and that's more important. Probably. See you at the bucket, Eduardo

This is sort of what I'm wondering about - Travis generally hasn't demonstrated that he's capable of much at the MLB level, Chavis has a huge reverse split, and Cora has been managing as though he believes Holt should never face a left-handed pitcher, and Lin and Hernandez are also left-handed. Last I heard, too, Pearce is out for the rest of the month. So I'm wondering if there's another move in the offing to help the bench? Or maybe this is just the first example of DD Cora-proofing things.

Remember also that they are so close to the cap that any veteran-like reserve pickup (a Kinsler type from last year, for instance) would have to be roster finagled

chawson mentioned it. I remember Pearce's stretch at 1st. Nunez was definitely competent at 3rd base for defense, although not really this year anymore.

Brock Holt can breathe a sigh of relief now, but unless he is a worst worst case thinker, he really shouldn’t have had any worries for his job. Actually, earlier this year he might have had some worry.

Somehow Brock doesn't seem like the "worrying" kind. Just the "Caring" kind.

Hernandez is absolutely a better option than Nunez, but replacing Nunez with Sam Travis hardly seems like an upgrade. I hope this doesn't mean Chavis or one of the OFs are hurt. Or maybe Travis is just going to platoon with Benny until he breaks out of his funk?

He can also prevent JDM from getting OF starts and tweaking his bad back any further, if Cora puts the lineup together right.

I was wondering about Travis as well. He's awful. Why not take a flyer on Bryce Brenz. Yeah, they'd have to find room on the 40-man (DFA Travis?) but the guy has legit right handed power.

It was time. Really seems like a good teammate from what I can tell, and was entertaining as hell when playing well, but I don't think he has anything left.

Thanks for bailing out Kimbrell!

Nunez will probably ultimately be replaced by Chavis. Travis is just a placeholder until Moreland is back.

Nunez was big in the playoffs last year, and was a semi-regular on the best Red Sox team of all time.

One of the 25, he should be getting a lot more respect than he is getting in this thread so far.

The play at third to close out the Yankees was immense, and so was his World Series HR. He was also a real lift to the 2016 team when he came over and really helped to win the division that year.

Respect and thanks Eduardo!

Gray Eagle is right of course. What dominates this thread is the built up frustration many of us felt when Cora routinely played Nunez over Holt against rhp. I for one will never forget that play to close out the 2018 alds. It was lovely on both ends. (edited to change the date to reflect reality)

When I saw he was DFA’d I assumed it was for another arm. He’s toast and I don’t see any downside to letting him go but there isn’t an upside at this point either since Travis hasn’t shown any signs of being any good.

Kind of an odd move at this time.

We got a pre-cog here!

Tell me, who do we beat?

That being said, Cora seemed to make the right moves at 2b last year, at least enough to win the ALDS, ALCS, and WS.

Agree on Cora's freshman magic. But why didn't Hernandez bunt JBJ over to third last night? I have a guess. (Or should I take it to the game thread?)

The last time they gave away an out on a bunt, they failed to score, so Cora probably decided to not make the same mistake twice. It would have actually been a shrewd move if JBJ had been paying attention to the path of the ball. He could have still made it to third if he'd taken off as soon as the defender committed to throwing the speedy Marco out at 1B, because he would have had to rush the throw.

That's my best guess.

Sam Travis has been hitting well in Pawtucket (.794 OPS on the season) and very well (.326/.348/.506/.854 per Speier) against LHP.
