Right-hander Nathan Eovaldi and the Texas Rangers are in agreement on a two-year, $34 million contract that includes a third-year vesting player option, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN. Performance bonuses in the contract can take the total value even higher.

I like Eovaldi. Love his competitiveness and he's got great stuff. I've always been surprised at how low his k/9 numbers are though, given that he throws 98 mph and has like two other nasty pitches. But I've always liked him and he will forever be a true Red Sox for what he gave the team in 2018. And I'd like for him to still be on the Red Sox' roster.

HOWEVER...

Innings pitched, 2018-2022 (forget 2020):
2018: 111.0
2019: 67.2
2021: 182.1
2022: 109.1

Going back further....
2012: 119.1
2013: 106.1
2014: 199.2
2015: 154.1
2016: 124.2

So only 3 times in his entire MLB career of 11 seasons has he thrown more than 120 innings. THREE. Only twice has he thrown more than 155 innings.

Yes the Sox still need to replace those innings. But that's an average of 130 innings per season - we aren't talking about a workhorse starter here.

That’s is very reasonable. The QO obviously hurt his market, but I’m surprised that was the top bid. Texas should be interesting this year.

Even at those numbers, I'm perfectly fine moving on from Eovaldi. He's not what this team needs at this time. It's highly unlikely this team will be competitive for a few more seasons, so for the future it's better to see if any young guys are going to be pitching for the next great RS team.

I’d rather have Eovaldi than Jansen.

Not that Eovaldi wasn't a good bet to spend a ton of time on the DL as well but

Hope the AAA guys are prepared to throw like 20 MLB starts a piece

Really, I hope it's Devers last man standing. He is my favorite Red Sox now. If he leaves I will feel hurt. Not going to lie.
I agree, but.... It won't be that long before we fall in love with Bello and Casas and Rafaela and Mayer and Mata and Yorke, and a whole new crop of homegrown players.

Rangers rotation looks solid, and expensive. Could also see it being an absolute disaster.

DeGrom, Eovaldi, Perez, Gray, Heaney, Odorizzi

I also got to see Leiter pitch in person 3 times last year. He wasn't close to ready, and has serious control problems. Obviously something may have clicked over the winter, but the fact he only made it through 6 innings once the entire AA season wouldn't leave me feeling confident as a Rangers fan, at least not for another year. He's still young, so I wouldn't call him a bust, but he is going to have to show some serious improvement this year, in my opinion.
