Things could be going better.

He had the same issue last year. Had surgery March 30th and returned May 30th(per Pete Abe)

God, just brutal. The good vibes from last night lasted like 12 hours. Glad that E-Rod is showing some signs of life...rest of the rotation is really going to have to step up here.

It’s kind of too bad that they extended Sale and Bogaerts. I mean, not really — I’m glad they’re sticking around — but if this season is going to circle the drain, it would have been fun for prospect humpers like me to see what they could have fetched come July.

short term: pretty bad with no day off for 3 weeks. they will have to decide who fills in, and it won't be Velazquez every time.

long term: ...

He’ll almost definitely need a scope and 2-3 months out. They’re not going to dick around with that elbow after signing him for four years

This is the Eovaldi experience. Arm troubles his entire career. Just have to hope they can extract half decent value from the contract going forward. This season is already off to a terrible start so don’t get cute. Give him as much time as he needs.

Any chance we see Darwinson? Walks have been a problem so guessing probably not.

Darwinzon maybe in a swingman role with Velazquez? Sort of an opener? If they want to get creative. Pete Abe mentions Shawaryn as a possible.

Loose bodies sound like fragments to be removed, not an indication that his elbow is structurally unsound. Short term bummer but nothing more?

When I look at his innings output throughout his career it's really hard to envision him all of a sudden going 200 innings and competing for 15 wins. We paid him like he has a decent chance to do that every year. I have a weird feeling we're going to see very little of him over the next four years.

I said it last November and I'll say it now: there has never been a season where Eovaldi was effective and Clay Buchholz wasn't more effective. We could have had Buchholz and Wilson Ramos and Adam Ottavino (or however else you'd spend $68 mil), but instead we paid a premium for three great weeks. Yay.

Yeah I’m sure Buchholz would have soldiered up last fall. Come on.

Rapidly nearing the point where it might be best just to punt on the season. Trade a couple people at the deadline, get a top 10 pick and start rebuilding the farm.

We still would have reaped the benefit of last fall had they let Eovaldi walk in November.

It's not that I think Buchholz would have been a better bet than Eovaldi this year (he would not have been). It's that Buchholz + Ramos + Ottavino would have been better than Eovaldi + Leon + Thornburg. It also would have avoided a long term deal with a guy who has had the same number of Tommy John surgeries as he has seasons where he pitched 150 innings.

When he comes back, make him the closer. Less wear and tear.
Depending on the state of the bullpen (and the rotation) when he's ready to come back, that might be a decent option for the remainder of this year. If only because it would require less rehab to get him up to speed and back on the big league roster. Two months off would probably require 2-3 rehab starts and then a protected (pitch limited) ramp up once he returned. As opposed to 2-3 rehab relief appearances (saving a week) then selective use out of the big league pen. I don't think it needs to be a permanent move, though.

Maybe DRS can chime in, but I don't think loose bodies in the elbow are a result of wear and tear. Seems more like a result of specific trauma. In other words, it's something that can shake loose and be a problem because of one pitch rather than a series of them. I'm not sure relieving would alleviate the chances of it happening again.

Gio Gonzalez is opting out of his Yankees contract, how cheaply could be be gotten?

Ottavino was not coming here without a significant premium.
Maybe, maybe not. If you don’t think they would have gotten him, replace Ottavino with any of the other bullpen options that were available. Point is they put almost all of their budget to add payroll in 2019 on Eovaldi, when there were guys only marginally worse that were way cheaper, and this left big holes in the roster that could have otherwise been filled.

They wouldn’t have. He grew up a yankee fan, his dad said he wanted to play there, and he is. Which other bullpen options? Who would be pitching in Eovaldi’s rotation spot for this season and going forward?

Adam Ottavino was so locked into the Yankees that he reached out to the Red Sox and then waited until January 29 to sign with NY.
Yes, I'd use the Red Sox as a wedge to try to get a few extra bucks as well

Is there any actual evidence that this is what was going on? Because Patrick Corbin was supposedly locked into going home to NY until he signed elsewhere.

The reason they did not engage Ottavino or any other meaningful reliever was not that they were afraid of being used as leverage. It was that they could not afford to, having spent most of their $ on Eovaldi. My position was (and remains) that this was a mistake.

Keuchel would cost around $30 million (with penalties) after tax, and I’d be worried about getting him up to speed.

Any interest in Homer Bailey? He’s had a nice start with the Royals and looks rebuilt, posting very solid K and BB percentages and making league minimum. Added a nice splitter the league hasn’t figured out yet.

How is it possible that Jerry is still a lurker with analysis like that?
Probably because he wasn't joking.

This from Thursday from Jerry;

"I’m ready to count this season as a loss. Start looking forward to 2020 and beyond. We need to find our future at 2B and find a decent MLB caliber catcher."

Everyone knows it wasn’t a joke and no one was really wondering why he was still a lurker.

Hey everyone I’m a new member and have been following the Sox for 43 years now. Nathen is certainly a loss but he has very little to do with our real issues the FO still hasn’t addressed.

I’m glad Leon “our best game caller” by far is back but a non hitting bottom of the order will continue to kill us. JBJ should be nothing more than a defensive specialist coming off the bench or traded. Catcher has also been an issue forever and Vasquez is not the answer. Realmuto was available and now gone so now he will just become another expensive FA at some point. You mean to tell me with three catchers and others we couldn’t engage the Marlins for a trade? Even a guy like Wilson Ramos is better. Forget our SP’s favorite catchers. Get a solid contributor behind the plate and in CF long term.

In my opinion the only safe players in this starting lineup should be: Mookie, JD, Bogy, Beni, maybe Devers but I’m not convinced and Leon until we find a decent game caller who can hit. Pede? I still love the guy out there but age and health may not allow him to ever really regain his form. Our team could be so much better with a little less favoritism on dead weight hitters like Nunez, Vasquez, Leon and two aging first baseman who only contribute in small stretches. Yes we won the WS again and I will certainly take that every four years or so but this present team has too many weaknesses to do it again.

Philly paid a high price to get Realmuto, parting with their top pitching prospect, the 35th rated prospect overall, a Major League catcher in Alfaro, who is probably better than any of the three Boston could have offered, and a LHP that may be a year or two away from being ready for The Show, and international bonus pool money.

Boston's best pitching prospect is Darwinzon Hernandez, who is not at Sanchez's level and their farm system has been stretched so thin that there might not be anyone who fits the basic description of Wilson, plus they didn't have much bonus pool money left.

That wasn't a deal they were going to be able to swing without sweetening the pot.

Who would you replace the other players with?

Wasn't sure if I should read that as "Fans Corner" or "Fan Scorner," but after reading the post I'm going with the latter. :)

I personally think any combination of Vasquez, Swihart “while Blake was hitting in ST” along with Chavis and a minor league pitcher could have gotten Realmuto. To my knowledge no effort was even made

Dombrowski has always backed JBJ and it’s embarrassing he is playing in the majors daily. Nunez, Vasquez, Leon, Holt, Pierce kill this team offensively. We have no real backup OF other than JD and a very weak bullpen which will show its ugly side at some point. The Yankees are holding their own with 13 key injuries and we can’t even round out a starting lineup.
