I can't remember exactly how loans work. But when you have a player on loan don't you get the first option to buy? If so, Arsenal never had the chance to buy Lukaku.

Not exactly. Lukaku's loan finished in June and he was "back" at Chelsea until sold.

Some loans have a future fee, where there is a "first option" to buy. Most loans do not - Christian Atsu of Everton (loaned from Chelsea) or last season Gerard Deulefeu of Everton (on loan from Barcelona) are examples.

The more technical fans of soccer, what grade would you give Ozil's tenure at Arsenal? I watch every game and I really haven't seen him do anything special.

He hasn't been awesome but I also think he suffers from being a poor fit personally for Wenger's system. There is only one ball and Ozil, at his best, is the primary playmaker. But Arsenal has 6 world class chefs on the field at once, so yeah Ozil looks like crap when tending the fry station.

You take that back. Scottish Messi owns.

Didn't watch the match in its entirety yet, but holy cow Lukaku's work on goal 2 and that was with a bad toe.

You think Harry knows how bad a shape QPR are in?

I mean, when you see N. Chadli 2 (12', 37'), I think it's time to re-evaluate your tactics.

Eriksen is a great player.  Really impressed with him.

Is this Spurs best starting 11?  Does Dembele get a chance?  If not...mind sending him to my midtable club?

Since this is a game thread--that Heineken commercial they showed at the half where the dude gets in the cab, seeing the hot redhead get out, finds her, I don't know, business cards in the cab, then proceeds to go to each location INSTEAD OF JUST POPPING RIGHT BACK OUT OF THE CAB AND YELLING "HEY!!" annoys me.

No, I don't think it is. I think Dembele for Bentleb, Davis for Rose, and Walker for Dier would be the best (Dier for Kaboul, maybe?)

Sunderland is pressing Jones and Blackett and literally leaving Smalling alone to bring the ball into the final third.  He looks scared shitless of doing so.  Definitely a weakness in the back 3.  Hopefully Rojo replaces him, Evans comes in to the middle and Jones stays on the right.

Smalling is subbed off early, Jones moves to the center and Michael Keane takes up right center back.  Lets see if they pressure Jones and let Keane have the ball...

I LOVE the tactical cam.

As much as you get the formations, you also get a much better idea who knows WTF they're doing.  Or how if Sterling could have figured out how to let that long ball drop over his right shoulder instead of turning him around, he's in alone on Hart instead of holding the ball up.

That yellow to Toure had better have been for dissent because the foul was nothing and it wasn't even a tackle from behind
Yeah, it looked light, got to think he said something.

City are looking a bit frustrated with the ref, but it looks like Liverpool are getting to the ball just ahead of the City players and drawing fouls.

I won't get to see it until tonight so take this with all of the grains of salt but according to the Flashscore Live Commentary they stated that the foul was a tactical one which I read as "professional".

And falling over dramatically.  But I think i've said it earlier, this match is just too soon for City.  Still not playing the strongest XI and very out of sync.  Yaya needs another 2-3 weeks to be more than just a deep lying midfielder, so City is having to absorb a lot of pressure and play on the counter, but this team is built to have the ball.  It's ugly stuff so far, Liverpool haven't been all that great but they've had the betterof the first 40 minutes.

To be fair, when Yaya Toure puts an arm into Coutinho's back, it's pretty likely it's going to knock him over. Slight size disparity there.

Moreno with a pretty putrid couple minutes.  That missed tackle from behind on Zabaleta in the box was insane, then his waiting for the ball allows Jovetic to steal in and get an easy look at the goal.

I'm still learning the finer details of the game, but seemingly standing around waiting to play the ball inside your own penalty area is not good football.

Pretty solid first half. It just goes to show that a slight hesitation is deadly against an opponent like this.

Liverpool is getting some room on the outsides, but obviously City's height and defensive organization make them difficult to beat on crosses.

Liverpool looked like the better team for most of the first half. City is fortunate to be ahead. I'll take it though.

I thought Liverpool looked pretty good.  I don't see the energy and dynamism of last year but they've been well organized and seemed to be approaching a big away match in just the right way until one bad sequence.

Sterling continues to impress.   I'm still waiting to see something notable from Coutinho.

Gary Neville with some solid punditry on the defensive laspes for the goal. Earlier in the attack when the ball was wide right, Liverpool had three players centrally on the box, with only one City player to mark. Lovren should have closed down the space on the right and there wouldn't have been an easy ball into the box in the first place. Moreno was caught napping, no excuse for not attacking the ball and getting in the clearance.

Nice move for City's second. Can't say much about that.

Not sure why Johnson tried to block that on the line with a high boot instead of his head.
