And the top story of NBA Today is...

Yup you guessed it, the Lakers! They get the first 10 minutes of the show. After the break, Celtics get all of... 5 minutes.
Perk did say the current team is one of the best offensive teams he's ever seen.

I hate to feed the bear, because you guys need to get over this "the C's don't get enough respect from ESPN" whining. (Who gives a shit, really? Just don't watch ESPN. I don't other than for live sports.) But last night I was watching the end of Suns-Lakers, and after the game SportsCenter begins with Linda Cohn announcing what a great night it was for LA sports, and they flashed for a second to a shot of the baseball crew ready to discuss Game 1 of the World Series before throwing it to Kendrick Perkins to get his thoughts on the Lakers big win over the Suns and 2-0 start. If Simmons and Russillo were writing a parody bit about how ESPN is always "Lakers Uber Alles", it could not be more on that point than this.

Briefly watched First Take.. my tv was tuned into the game last night and started with ESPN today... they were arguing (I think) about whether or not Mahomes would be the GOAT if the Chiefs won this year... The commentator making the argument was making the argument that Brady didn't start winning super bowls until he got talent like Randy Moss around him, later in his career.

It's so dumb that they don't know that they don't know he won three in his first few years and didn't win with Moss.. and nobody even argued against the point.

edit: it was just people yelling over one another making dumb point after dumb point..even the ones arguing for Brady. How do people watch this?

Looking forward to learning more. Will Chuck, Kenny and Shaq stivk around?

More interesting is that this shows uncharaceristic, and badly-needed, humility and self-awareness by ESPN wrt their shite NBA coverage. Im an ESPN admirer for most of their sports and sports news coverage, but when it comes to the NBA, woof.

Will ESPN give the show time to breathe or will it be nonstop commercial breaks during halftime and a 10-minute post-game wrap-up before moving onto SVP's Sportscenter?

ESPN will probably put Stephen A on the show and make everything about him.

The show is going to be produced by TNT Sports and licensed to ESPN. So I’d be surprised if ESPN talent are a part of it, since they’re not employed by TNT Sports.

ESPN has been desperately trying to create their own Inside the NBA for years. I don’t think they’re going to mess with the current cast.

Got to have more space for another betting show or ex-athletes yelling about non-sense.

Not that Around the Horn was some beacon of journalism, but they did have some serious journalists on the show in a more casual atmosphere over the years and it's a shame there will be one less outlet. I used to appreciate seeing the Bob Ryans, Jackie MacMullans, etc. jump between this show, the Sports Reporters and Pardon the Interruption from time to time.

It also has been an amazing showcase for diversity for a sports talk show

ESPN brass talks Inside the NBA
“We don’t want to change it. We don’t want to interject new talent into it. We don’t want to really do anything to it.”
So, when and where will we see Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal and Inside the NBA on ESPN/ABC?
“They’ll do the NBA Final,” said Magnus. “They’ll do a Conference Final, which is part of a new rights agreement. They’ll do pretty much the entire playoff run. And then they’ll do primarily during the regular season, the Saturday night and/or Sunday afternoon window on ABC."

I must say, this kind of thing is so, so rare in the modern media environment. Someone *always* wants to tinker and invariably they win out. Obviously they need to follow through, but for once maybe ESPN isn't being pathetic?

ESPN has an early look at potential NBA All Star teams, and lists Embiid amongst its "toughest cuts".

Why is someone who has played 4 games (and hasn't won a single game!), is shooting 37.9% from the field, and averaging a career low in PPG and RPG a "tough cut"?

Queta and Kornet have more of a claim to being an All Star than Embiid.

According to ESPN, the biggest MLB mistake since 2020 was the Angels not trading away Ohtani and letting him walk away and getting nothing back but a draft pick. At the same time, the Red Sox trading away Mookie and getting something in return better than a draft pick, is the fourth biggest mistake of the decade so far.

So which is it, ESPN, should you trade away MVPs or not trade away MVPs?

The Mookie trade was a disaster for two reasons (but only one of which is pertinent here even though I haven't read the story). The most important reason is because the return for Mookie was absolute trash. With the return the Red Sox got, it would have almost been better for them to let Mookie go to free agency and either see if they could sign him or get the draft pick.

Bloom made a drawn out mess of this from the beginning (renegging on prospects and stapling Price to Betts at the last minute) and over the ensuing years Verdugo, Wong and Downs proved to be not worth the effort. Plus Mookie has won two World Series at the time and the Sox have made the playoffs once.

I didn't think that the Angels should've traded Ohtani at the time, but if they absolutely knew for 100% certain that he wasn't coming back, I bet that if the team played their cards right and got a nice bidding war going, they could've made out like bandits on an Ohtani deal. But this is the Angels we're talking about so for them "playing it right" probably wasn't going to happen. So they might as well whiff on a draft pick and treat their fans to another Ohtani year rather than whiff on a prospect package (which can be a reminder of the trade) and rob their fans of an Ohtani season.

I personally wouldn't have put Ohtani at number one, but I'm also not trying to goose my click rate.

Personally I think the Athletics leaving Oakland for LV without a real plan, essentially killing a historic franchise, was the biggest mistake since 2020.

Yeah. That was more stupid than anything the Angels or Red Sox did. Agreed.
