Schilling didn't "go after" another ESPN employee, of course they didn't suspend him.
I would think that the suits had a conversation with Schill to "slow his roll". You can't let this shit to start to get out of control.

ESPN's response: "Keith’s Twitter suspension had absolutely nothing to do with his opinions on the subject."

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/espn-suspends-keith-law-twitter-report-article-1.2019755

Of course that likely means that his suspension is for criticizing another ESPN personality not for the content of the criticism.
Just par for the course with ESPN, hire athletes who are under-educated and/or terrible human beings (Ray Lewis), then let them comment about social issues, never discipline them for saying stupid things that would damage your brand's journalistic integrity if you had any, then go nuts when the actual writers on your payroll point out that they are idiots.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it was a Tremendous secret.

And I'm guessing the hit a monkey comment was what did him in. The rest seemed fairly innocuous.

Something mega-crashed with their NBA scorekeeping tonight. First all the fantasy data froze at about 8:30. An hour later, it's still frozen, but also just checking their regular main page and clicking on NBA scores it says "There are no NBA games today" and other such pages of meltdown.

It's like a meteor hit bristol, but only took out the NBA data.

Nope, I logged on to get that score (UVa fan), and the game was completely missing from the scores page around 10:30.  They didn't even have a blank box with TBD, the whole thing was gone.  Very strange.

Gronk is in the conversation for the greatest TE to ever play the game of football.  Just assuming, based on any measurables and a sample size of 3 plays in a very specific circumstance (goal line), that Watt would be far and away the best to ever play TE is stupid.  Mind numbingly stupid.

SportsCenter just spent 5 minutes on William and Kate attending a Cavs/Nets game.  Why the hell do I care what LeBron and KG think about English royals?  Why do I get the feeling ESPN wouldn't have even covered this if they attended a Bucks/Grizzlies game?  This story was placed ahead of Tim Kurkjian providing us the latest on Jon Lester and the Winter Meetings.

I honestly feel that as an English teacher who lives in Japan and has for a long time, I could handle sports reporting as well or better than almost anyone in the U.S. at this moment, maybe Charles Pierce excluded but he isn't really reporting, is he? Maybe a new calling in life?

Jay Glazer (who broke the Manziel-is-starting story this afternoon):

Haha an all-time low from @ESPN on their constant thievery of other's work. FOX PR guy calls them to call BS on their claim they had Manziel scoop. News desk guy @sportscenter tells him their reporter didn't want to be identified. Huh? What reporter doesn't want credit for hard work paying off? Lying bastards. Haha

Johnny Football's car is now the most famous vehicle since Hernandez'

BEREA, Ohio -- Johnny Manziel called his ugly debut as an NFL starter an "absolutely" humbling experience, and his midweek preparation habits for Sunday's game at Carolina seem to validate those words.
ESPN spotted Manziel's car arriving at the Browns' facility at around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, more than five hours before the team is scheduled to practice at 12:50 p.m. Unless someone else was driving the car, Manziel was likely coming to the facility for prep work on the Panthers. This was the same car Manziel often drives to games and practices.
A 7:30 arrival would be considered early for most NFL standards, unless the Browns were holding team meetings. The team's first QB positional meeting Wednesday was at 8:40 a.m.

So it's 5 hours early, unless they were having early meetings, which they were, so it's not 5 hours early.

So, I don't watch football and am not entirely aware--for Manziel, is there a reason outside his being an arrogant asshole that everyone is obsessed with him? Like, he was a garden variety excellent college player, right? It's just 100% because he's a flashy dickhead?

Yes. ESPN's coverage of him is the full E! conversion to covering celebrity (acquired largely for the wrong reasons to boot) over merit.

He is Kardashian, and ESPN pushing his narrative is sales over journalism. In other words, I don't know that everyone is obsessed with him. ESPN is simply pressing to make it so.

It's the last straw for me w the WWL. I'm out.

Partly flashy dickhead, and partly that the conventional narrative from the high-waisters is that "he doesn't work hard enough / parties too much".  The possibility that he, like Tim Tebow or Gino Torretta or Pat Sullivan, just isn't good enough to be an NFL QB is not part of the story yet.

And don't overlook the possibility that Manziel's agent called a few reporters to point out Johnny's early-tude, knowing that *all* of them would cover it, if for no other reason than fear that *one* of them would.

This isn't quite fair; I think there's a large group of people who simply think he's not good enough. Sure, the media enjoys pushing angles like partying (and he's given them tons of reason to), but I think the general public believes he's just not that good. When you combine it with his arrogance, it makes for a controversial figure that riles people up. Of course ESPN is gonna exploit that.

A big part of this was his embracing the "Johnny Football" nickname (I think he tried to trademark it?).  It was just way too grandiose and easy to cut him down for.

edit: yes, trademarked

and from the article's last sentence,

Something tells us the Johnny Football business will outlast the Johnny Football athletic career by a longshot.

...which is amusing only in that it's an article on nfl.com

To be fair, Skip takes 100 different positions a day since that's his job. Those shows are nothing but pretend arguments and Skip is all too happy to oblige. He probably doesn't remember his name at this point.

You had to love the MNF crew engaging in their usual three-hour ballwashing of Peyton Manning in a game where he threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter and pissed away a much-needed win.

Yesterday ESPN had some video on the front page of their site about LeBron's 10 year old son playing basketball. Fine. Today, they had ANOTHER one, because one video just wasn't enough! When LeBron isn't playing, are they just going to show us videos of his son? The sad thing is, there is some really good stuff on ESPN if you dig hard enough, but it is covered up by so much bullshit like LeBron's kid and what Maziel ate for breakfast this morning.

Brian Windhorst is currently reading an essay he wrote on Lebron turning 30 on SportsCenter, and its pretty funny.

A mixture of both. Haha funny because I laugh at how pathetic Windhorst is as a "reporter" and it is funny to visualize his interactions with LeBron. Sad because this is the WWL and they have an 8 minute segment for one guys uneventful birthday.
