Was going to be an uphill battle for United anyways…that doesn’t help. I mean, you keep the same gameplan and hope you got it right but that one has to sting.

With 7m 56 seconds on the clock the BBC commentator said '...Utd are playing their first football of the match' - not wrong to be fair.

Is Fergie sitting next to a Glazer? Fun match great company.

This neither feels like a Cup Final or a local derby. What Utd would give for a 25 year old Roy Keane in midfield and the armband.

what a joy to be able to listen to either BBC 5 Live with Ian Dennis, TalkSport with Jim Proudfoot/Andy Townsend or SiriusXM TalkSport international feed with Tom Rennie/Paul Parker

That’s one of those coin flip handballs; his arm is definitely outstretched but it was arguably a natural position based on how he was moving.

Agreed. Poor.

Oh and Fergie is smiling now.

Edit: I'm neutral so the game needed something from Utd. Soft pen counts in that regard. feels more like a cup final now.
For sure…the whole league feels like that now- I’ve always had a soft spot for City going way back, and having two Belgian stars certainly made me root for them, but the league needed Arsenal this year or the Klopp teams, or the occasional Chelsea upset to keep this experiment from making footy boring in the English top flight

Not a pen for me. Given how he was jumping it’s a perfectly normal arm position and it was point blank range with no chance to move it away.

Seen the same thing not called a penalty a thousand times. Referees should err on the side of not giving away goals for free, especially in a cup final.

From a neutral’s point of view it’s kind of hard to determine the rooting interest.

It would be good to have United deny City the treble for a multitude of reasons. (Bonus)

But if City are going to win it would be better to embarrass United. (Bonus)

Oh My God. Gundogan. Second First timer. Second goaler. 2:1

I'm rooting for citeh. Fuck Utd.

Mark E and Johnny Marr for the win.

I was just going to say that, after the first goal, KDB hasn't been as sharp as he can be, but then he draws the foul and then gets the free kick right to Gündogan. Say what you will about Haaland or anyone else on this Man City side, but KDB is the engine of this team, and when he's on they're pretty close to unstoppable.

Now KDB off, for Foden? Is he injured, Pep saving him for Inter, or some strategy Pep has in mind?

City bring on Foden for KDB
Utd are bring on Weghorst for Sancho.

Horses for courses i guess.

Jeezo Fergie was pulling some face there. Like he'd licked piss off a nettle.

Back to the PEN … Grealish didn’t have to raise his arm - he was coming down from the jump and it only came up as he twisted in response to the header.
I think the current rule is that anything above the shoulders with the arms is de-facto considered an unnatural position. Now, I'm not saying that should be the rule - so like, if it's coming straight at your face you can't put your arms up, that's "unnatural", you have to do the natural thing and take a hard one off the dome? - but given that it is, the ref can't do anything other than call it there.

I just wish he had discretion to award a direct free kick from the spot of the foul. Or even an unimpeded kick (a la a penalty), but from the spot of the foul. Like, okay, here's your shot. .10 xG. Not worthless but not an outrageous advantage either. God speed.

Gary Lineker casually mentioned during the half time punditry on BBC1 that he had reliable information that the penalty rule was going to change to a more common sense approach next season. He didn't name the source, nor did any of his colleagues (Alan Shearer, Peter Schmeichel or Micah Richards) push him for one.

Bleh. Can’t complain too much about the result. It was a good season for United and if Ten Hag gets backed correctly the progress should continue.
