8 years, $76 million (9.5 AAV) for Stone in Vegas.
Wow they gave up an elite prospect and gave him that deal. The Bruins might’ve dodged a bullet. The probably would’ve had to give them McAvoy and a 1st to beat that. Then who knows if he would’ve signed? Keep in mind Nevada is a no state income tax state.

Penguins traded Tanner Pearson to VAN for Eric Gudbranson. Oof. They guy won 2 cups in a row, but Rutherford has spent a large part of this year undoing earlier mistakes.

As soon as Chiarelli was fired, Haggerty had no one left to tip him off. He's as ill-informed as Murphy these days.
And he’s the laziness guy on the beat. Which sucks because when he was starting out he was one of the hardest workers on the beat. As soon as he got his steady gig he put it on cruise control.

Some random thoughts:

- I wanted Stone (and would’ve signed the contract too). B’s probably could’ve beaten that package by adding pieces, but seems the Sens wanted quality over quantity. B’s don’t have a Brannstrom. Can’t blame Ottawa.

- I can’t believe Ottawa did actually nuke it to the extent they did. I figured they would offer a blank check to Stone or Duchene to save face. Fascinating to follow if Melynk would get out of the way. If Brannstrom is the real deal, a Chabot - Brannstrom top pairing is a great place to start and they’ve got a mountain of draft picks to work with.

- Have to give CBJ credit for going for it, even if they did blow way past being reckless. They don’t have a great farm system and spent a ton of draft capital to load up on pending UFA’s.

I don't know, I think going this gung-ho without an already-stellar team is ill-advised. I can't help but see Jarmo Kekalainen as a 70+ year old federal legislator and future draft picks / assets as climate change. He knows if this goes tits up he likely won't be around for it, so what does he care?

No doubt it is likely ill advised. But it is a franchise that has yet to win a playoff series. I think taking a swing at it has some value in a case like this.

I think the crazy thing for Columbus is they are in the playoffs by 1 point. Their most likely opponents are Washington and Tampa. One slump and they could miss altogether. They are probably going to lose Panarin and Bob and they could sign Duchene but it will cost them another first rounder. They don't have any real gamebreaking prospects and if they don't sign Duchene, that forward corps is PLD, Atkinson and a bunch of meh.

Seems it could end up in another prolonged period of mediocrity. I don't love it.

It will be interesting to see if during the final few games of the season teams in the Met jockey for the 7th seed instead of the 3rd seed in the Met. Have to imagine most teams would rather play the NYI than the defending SC champs.

Now that we are passed the TDL looking towards FA, if ever there was a player that would warrant an offer sheet it is Brayden Point. Great speed, hands, vision and hockey IQ. If he gets a bit stronger he will be a top 10 C in the league for many years. TB is going to be in a significant cap crunch with around 10M in cap space and needing to replace 2-3 D.

I'd offer Point whatever the max of the 1,2,3 tier is for 4-5 yrs and force TB to make some difficult roster decisions both short term and long term. They have a glut of long term 5+M FWD contracts. No better way to beat your competition than to sign away their 2nd line C for a few draft picks.

I think Columbus was going to be pretty bad for a couple years anyway without Bob and Panarin. Might as well go for it and do a proper tanking.

As for Point, I don’t think there’s any chance he would sign a short term offer sheet for $8.1m, you’d be looking at paying him > $10.1m and giving up 4 first round picks.

If Columbus traded Panarin and Bob then they’re stuck in a cycle of perpetual mediocracy anyways. Maybe spending all their draft capital on additional UFA’s isn’t the right way to go, but I do think there is value for them as a franchise trying to win. The Metro is no great shakes this year. I see no reason they can’t reach the conference finals.

The insider types all seem to think offer sheets make a comeback this offseason. I’ll believe it when I see it, but Point, Marner and one of the Winnipeg players seem to be candidates.
