And where was he at that time? Why didn't he take the initiative to investigate this? Anyone who is in the media, then accuses "the media" of not investigating something, is worthless.

Judging by the reaction, looks like you guys gave Felger exactly what he was looking for.

I don't listen to him all that often anymore now that I have moved but it's funny watching everyone get their panties in a wad over something Felger said about a player everyone likes.

Oh, he got a reaction out of me, he also got me to turn off his show for a few days.

This is the perfect place to lament his shock jock behavior.

Actually running these down would inevitably result mainly in dry wells, and he would lose the cudgel of his talking point.

Well, perhaps not, he's had media guests on who have produced meaningful evidence to counter one of his pet propositions. Felger will momentarily concede then let a few days pass and resume his original stance.

Kudos to Felger today for a good discussion of NFL rules emphasis, and offense-boosting agenda.

The ink isn't even dry, and Felger and Mazz are already shoving the 'Castillo is on steroids' story down our throats.  Good grief.

I watched just long enough to hear Felger wonder if Cespedes and Castillo would be enough to land Stanton. Oh and they both have more value than Mookie who is apparently a "third piece" in a deal.

In case you were wondering, Tony Mazz classifies Mankins as "pretty good" at pass protection.

I have a very large bullshit capacitor for this show; I listen well after most others (here) have tuned out.

Mazz had filled the bullshit capacitor in the first 25 minutes of the show. He knows nothing about football. Nothing.

Not only nothing about football, but nothing about business. He basically admitted he had no idea if Mankins was still an elite guard, and then was knocking the trade only because he thought the Patriots should spend more money because they can. Just a really weird take on the trade.

It all comes back to Mazz thinking he can just get by off the seat of his pants without putting any of the work in necessary to really bring informed opinions to the table -- and by extension, spar with Felger because he's mastered the subject matter and has confidence in his convictions. But, the ratings are good, so why change his approach? Not going to happen.

My favorite Mazz-ism of all is when he starts to make a point and then proclaims, "I actually looked this up, Mike!" with the implication being that for him, "looking it up" is only to be done on special occasions, not the norm, and we're all supposed to be impressed that he took the time to do actual research on something.

Spot on BH.

The other Mazz-ism that drove me bananas yesterday is when he tries to anticipate Felger's opinion and then gets audibly disappointed he didn't get it right and has to revise the "you're right Mike!" talking points he scribbled on a napkin at DD ten minutes before the show started.

The first thing Mazz went to on the Mankins trade was "is this revenge for what happened with the contract?" which Felger brushed aside as "irrelevant".
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Well, then it's the contract, right?"
"Sort of..."
"You're EXACTLY RIGHT, Mike! THEY'RE CHEAP!"

After awhile, was clear Felger was ok with the trade, and he ended up saying something along the lines of "I like this trade, on the Patriots side on this one" and Mazz in an almost hurt way, meekly said "I don't".  It's so obvious he can't stand when him and Felger disagree on something.

it was a bad trade only because of the timing and it makes the o-line weaker up the middle   and its way too early to say Jimmy G will pan out   and let say u go to the super bowl  u will reget this move esp if u play SEA or SF

No, it doesn't. Mankins performance against your Broncos in the AFCCG was atrocious, as Knighton owned him all day long - and Knighton ain't that good.

Mankins reputation is better than his play, now.

It's always that way. Reputation lags performance. On the way up. And on the way down.

Applies to radio programming too. That's how you get shifted into a podcast.

Greg Bedard was in studio today. He challenged Felger's assertions on a number of fronts, though when Felger started asking him pointed questions about Michael Sam (specifically, "if he wasn't gay, would he be on an NFL practice squad?"), Bedard hemmed & hawed before giving firm answers. He seemed to want to couch everything in ifs, thens, elses and buts. Yes, the "he's gay" thing is a sensitive topic and you don't want to say the wrong thing, but you can't waffle on stuff like that. The "Hot Takes" sports talk shtick has certainly grown old and lame, but namby-pamby non-committal stuff is at the other end of the spectrum and equally awful radio. Overall though, he was an enjoyable and informative presence with a listenable voice and good rapport.

Apparently he was due to meet with the GM or program director (or both?) after the show regarding a possible regular Tuesday gig. F&M were joking around with him about it during the show, with Felger humorously asking him if he was willing to take a hometown discount. When a smiling Bedard answered "All I want is to be paid a fair wage for my work," Felger busted out laughing and said, "Well OK, then. It was nice knowing you, Greg."

I hope they work something out, because anything that minimizes Mazz's airtime and horrible back & forths when it's just F&M by themselves would be a godsend. And Bedard would be an undisputed improvement over Wiggy by multiple orders of magnitude.

Wiggy is better on radio than Mazz. The Get Up Crew is minimizing his negatives nicely.

Unfortunately, no one is going to offer Mazz a job doing anything other than reviewing Law & Order re-runs.

What a depressing concept.

Even worse - Mazz has been doing it much longer. And Wiggy has had Mazz as part of his "education" in the business.

If this means someone actually challenging Felger's trolling at times with reason and less Mazz this is a good thing. Of course I don't get into my car until after 5 so I probably still won't be listening.

Mazz is on a roll today;

Bedard says "BB got too cute Sunday and in my opinion, he got outcoached."

Mazz agrees and says "By Joe Philbin. When I look at him, I think one word; GENIUS!"

Lots of posters in BBtL agree with him. I don't see it as a particularly controversial or outlandish point, even though I disagree with it.

There's a pretty strong argument to be made that the original suspension (two games) was a result of Ravens Owner Steve Bisciotti lobbying Goodell on Rice's behalf. Ultimately, Goodell's job is to be the frontman for the 32 owners, not think for himself.

Well I was really talking about being tone deaf when discussing a domestic violence case and using bitch as a derogatory word to describe someone involved.

I have to tell you, I think that SOSH has evolved way beyond where most of the rest of the country is when it comes to usage of a word like "bitch", which is thrown around pretty casually in all sorts of different settings.  I'm not defending it or making a judgment about its usage one way or another, but it is completely unsurprising to me that Felger used the word and I doubt that most people listening reacted to it one way or another.

That's a fair point PC - I appreciate your clarification because I totally missed it the first time.

And RalphWiggum made an excellent point in rebuttal. The dictionary definition of "bitch" has one gender-neutral entry; exactly the way Felger used it.

Stumbled across this piece on Pedroia Mazz wrote over a week ago, with still no corrections from Boston.com. Near the end it has this abortion of a sentence:

The message, once again, is that Belichick and Robert Kraft run the Patriots, not necessarily in that order, and there are no scared cows beneath the Hall-of-Fame coach in Foxboro.

Frightened cows can cause all sorts of trouble. Pretty sure Mazz meant to put Kraft & BB in the opposite order too.
