Felger was friends with BB on Nantucket until BB got mad at him over an article about a players contract. Lombardi couldn't have looked worse and repeatedly told Felger that BB would never speak to someone like him and they're beneath King BB. Anyone saying BB or the Patriots didn't know what the media saying is a complete idiot, hence Lombardi.

I can't stand F&M, but Felger was absolutely the winner here, Lombardi was terrible.
Yeah, sure sounds like Lombardi ran himself off the rails if that’s how it unfolded. I wonder if he thought he’d get a softball interview like 99 percent of these radio row interviews (or, really, sports radio interviews generally) are despite the bluster, and he said some dismissive, dumb shit when he got pushed on his heels.

Lombardi is defending a personal friend/former colleague, whereas Felger literally has no connection/dog in the fight except generating controversy and getting off on the interaction.

I don’t really care to listen to almost fifteen (!) minutes of them bickering, but Lombardi getting his hackles up defending BB to Felger of all people is the least surprising thing ever.
Yeah, Lombardi was definitely circling the wagons. I didn't think Felger was being his typically douchey self though, he seemed to have temporarily dusted off his Patriots beat reporter hat.

Lombardi is the Doug Pederson guy right? Why does he keep bringing up the Kennedy assassination?

I don't like Felger at all, but Lombardi is such a lightweight I wonder why people talk to him at all.

Best part of this was Mazz and tough guy Big Jim Murray barely uttering a single word for the whole segment.
That did make me laugh as well, Innocent Bystander Mode activated.

Not a Felger fan, but he did make a good point when Lombardi kept bragging about being an expert because he was 'in the building' but then he couldn't answer any questions about what it was actually like to have a meeting with the Krafts or why the salary cap was the way it was. Anyway, most Radio Row spots are pretty generic but that one was notable.

Lombardi went in prepared, he had already RT'ed someone shitting on Felger on Twitter (which everyone hillariously assumed was actually Patrick Pass and not some rando using his name) earlier in the week. That was an awesome segment, Lombardi was absolutely unhinged, though, especially with the constant Lee Harvey Oswalt stuff. Just loved how his argument went "oh yeahhh, it was allll Brady, right guys, I know" and jumped staright to "look, Mac Jones was trash and you can't win without the QB, none of the other great HCs in NFL history won without the QB". Cool, so which is it, Mike?

My favorite was when he was fighting back with the "when you're in my industry we are putting ourselves out there" I have no idea what he was referring to or "industry" he's in, what his job is ooutside of writing some book that he was talking about? His constant talking down to Felger and "media" people, when that may be he only job is in the "media" since he hasn't been employed in the NFL since 2016. Plus he was apparently wearing his Super Bowl rings while being a jackass. I need to go take a shower after defending F&M, but this was an all time asshole interview. It's not quite at the Jim Gray levels on T&R but close.

Toucher and Hardy spent an hour today on this interview it was so awful.

My best guess is that Lombardi thinks he'll get a pop from the Felger-hating audience (me) by "pwning" Felger no matter what he says. The problem is that all he has is "I'm in the building and you're not"; after that it's just "bladdle-addle-addle Lee Harvey Oswald bladdle-addle". He's just not smart enough to piece together something coherent and Frelger can sense it like a shark senses blood.

When Greg Bedard pulls the appeal to authority card it works because then he actually says what he heard in the building that Felger is wrong about. Greg also only does that when he's at the end of his rope; he doesn't lead with it like Lombardi.

Now that there is no US Weekly/In Style gossip around the Pats between Belichick, Brady, and Mac Jones, Felger has lost his mind; his take on the Pats free agency is ridiculous. "Why won't they spend money on Saquon Barkley/Josh Jacobs!" Seriously? Mr. You-can-find-a-RB-off-the-street? "Jacoby Brissett is like waving the white flag. Why don't they bring in Justin Fields?" Because he's got a 3 year body of work that is in the bottom third of QBs and you want them to trade for him for one season? And have another immature QB in the room? "They re-signed guys to run it back with a 4-13 team instead of bringing in new free agents." You mean the guys whose contracts had expired and were among the top 5 free agents along the OL and TE? And short money on an edge-setter, pass rusher, and WR3?

And, somehow, Mazz is even worse...

It’s really gotten embarrassing the last week or so. Hardy called them out for it this morning. They lived for the drama the last few years, now it’s just bitching about everything the team does, no matter what.

Felger's worried. Patriots are going to be middling now for the next several years and with that comes a lack of interest. Combine that with Audacy/ weei going into bankruptcy and he doesn't have someone to bounce off his next contract negotiation.

This is the key right here. The Pats need a 3-5 year rebuild, and that’s really bad for him and his talk show. Probably good for the organization and the fans, but awful for him. He saw how quickly it turned for Ordway across the street.

And Bedard roasted him yesterday for this specific thing as well - paraphrasing: "You don't care about the football team and how it's being run... you just care about your radio show. That's it. You asked me if I liked what they're doing, and I said 'Yes'. I'm trying to tell you how the Patriots are going about building a foundation and putting pieces together, and you just care about the ratings..."

I run hot and cold on Bedard, but he brazenly called out Felger on his own show and I loved it.

First Hardy, now Bedard.

I did laugh when Felger tried to shut it down by suggesting that listeners don’t want to hear about Ron Wolf and the 90s Packers, then the producer chimed in a few minutes later that the segment spiked the ratings.

If flustering Lombardi a month plus ago was a win, this was definitely a loss.

Right. I mean he's spent what, 10 years, saying that spending a lot of money or draft capital on a running back is insane; specifically pointing out that the NFL is a throw-first league and that running backs have lost their luster. And he's right about that. But then he does a complete 180 and is killing the Pats for not signing Barkley. WTF is going on with Felger?

For years and years Felger wanted Brady out of here. He said Brady would fall off a cliff, he endlessly complained about Alex Guererro. He claimed Brady took steroids. He non-stop called Brady a cheater over Deflategate and still does to this day. As for Belichick, he has portrayed an environment in which Belichick should be immediately fired ever since his show went on the air. For example, with all the bashing about free agency, they've had the exact same complaints every off season since they went on the air, beyond 2021, in which they bashed the team for signing too many free agents.

Well, now Felger has gotten exactly what he has wanted for all these years. Brady is gone. Belichick is gone. It took 15 years, but he finally got what he desired. So he should be happy and accept that Robert Kraft finally did what he's been demanding for.

One comment he made this week that I found particularly funny is him saying all they want is a winning team. they will be happy if they get that. Funny, I remember 10+ years of every single Monday, the show declaring that the Pats' victory on Sunday was meaningless and only happened because the opponent sucked. And that even playoff wins didn't count because they came against "tomato cans". Even seasons that they got to the Super Bowl (ex. 2017) were treated as massive failures. They were happy with the Pats for about 3 total weeks during the entire Brady era, each of the one week periods after they won the Super Bowl.

Yep. He’s a notorious goal post mover. He’s a fun listen though. Gotta give him that.

It's a fun listen if you enjoy seeing how he moves the goalpoasts, but after awhile he got lazy in how he moved them after the Patriots (as an example) were so good for so long. So I even lost interest in that. It also helps moving outside the radio reach so I had to more actively seek it out versus just getting in a car. Can't even remember the last time I listened to any Boston radio.

They’re going to be apoplectic after the Fields trade over the weekend.
And if they made that trade, all of a sudden Fields would suck, and they would be ranting about them getting a “pony” on the cheap in a trade instead of drafting a “horse”.

I'm a fan of Zo & Bertrand as it's more light hearted but sometimes listen to the opening of Felger & Mazz for a bit and it never fails to strike me how ANGRY they are at whatever. I get it's their job and they are crushing it ratings wise, but at the same time there's a voice in the back of my head that just says it's sports dudes.

From a sports discussion standpoint, it was quite possibly their worst week talking about football/the Patriots since they debuted. When Fred Toucher has more reasonable, more informed takes on NFL free agency and the Pats, you know you've jumped the shark. Ratings be damned, they were embarrassing.

Interesting rant during the opening hour by Felger about this article below in which players seek to blame rule changes like the pitch clock for causing injuries as opposed to what Felger firmly believes the blame should be squarely put on analytics.

https://x.com/bglobesports/status/1769886810090422353?s=46&t=xxvZTMezWkaSiYKGpP6ffg
I just heard this on a rebroadcast right now and I have to say he’s right. The pitch clock isn’t ruining arms, it’s max effort all the time.

yeah i dont get felger the pats have 53 mil in space they can still add 2-3 good players
It got funnier later when he was killing the team for targeting a Brissett level “bridge QB contract” and killing them for it instead of getting Wilson instead, only to clearly have someone tell him during a break that Wilson signed for the league minimum. Didn’t even miss a beat.

It should be noted that this week (or maybe it was last week), on a show where Felger and Mazz always call the owner/executives cheap, and that the cap is completely fake and how much the Pats suck for being "29th in cash spending over X years", whatever it is... Mazz bashed the team for "overpaying" Michael Onwenu.

So if they actually spent the money on signing a few big free agents (if there were any) they would bash the team for overpaying them.

If they draft Daniels or Maye or trade down it'll be a disaster in the F&M world no matter what. They have months of narratives lined depending on the outcome.

How is Max effort a function of analytics?
My understanding is that analytics determined that pitchers could get increased speed on pitches by taking a longer time between pitches to gear up to throw as hard as possible, and that such a way of working was a better way to get batters out than working more quickly with perhaps less effort on any given pitch.

Unlistenable. I love Felger saying they went into the draft with three big areas of need and didn't address any of them. And then sort of acquiesced and said, "I guess I'll give you Drake Maye." According to him, they settled or reached for all of their picks.

Why do people expect anything different at this point? To predict Felger's take just stick your finger up into the wind, see where the consensus is going, and Felger will jump to the other side to drive "engagement". It's boring radio, unless you like contrarianism and "i'm so above it all" radio. The other go to is "well they did do X (that I've been ranting about forever) but they didn't do against (someone that matters, didn't do it perfectly, etc) so it doesn't count" or at least that is where he was almost a decade ago when I stopped log into the apps to keep listening to this stuff even though I had moved away.

Most of the stuff out there is just so tired and overused at this point.

Totally in line for the show that says that pre-draft speculation is so useless that they'd rather throw markers at draft magazines to immediately flunk the team the day after the draft is over. It couldn't be more obvious that Felger comes up with the take far in advance, even before the draft happens, then manipulates things as best he can to support his take. "The wide receiver they took blows because he was 6th out of the run of X to Y!" Yeah, well he's also the first of the run of Y to Z. Using his logic every single pick in the draft is the best or the worst.
