What were Felger's talking points?

*MMA isn't the future. It's the present.
*Boxing is dead.
*Standup brawls are awesome, but ground game is boring.

Those are the points he hit on last night on Sports Tonight. Did he get into more specifics about different fighters, styles and weight divisions?

I'm a die hard MMA fan. Have been for about 12 years...my brother trained with the Gracies in Brazil and in SoCal and even beat a couple guys who later appeared on The Ultimate Fighter TV show. He got me into the sport over a decade ago and now I get every PPV and follow the sport religiously. All that said, I cringe when I hear just about any mainstream media person discuss it including Felger (I heard him on ComCast but couldn't listen to 98.5 today). The EEI and 98.5 guys have no idea what they're talking about and have no understanding of the nuances of the sport. I love MMA, but I also realize it is a fringe sport and I would rather have them totally avoid it if they are just going to sound like morons. That goes for ESPN too. The reality is 90% of the audience doesn't know enough to care and 10% know far more than the commentor and only want to smash the radio because they're annoyed at the ignorance. It's lose - lose in my opinion.

I'm in the same boat, with regard to my passion for MMA and opinion of how the mainstream media tends to cover it.

That said, Felger started off a bit snobbish about the whole thing, but he became more reasonable. Based on what he said about Saturday's card, it would be safe to classify him as a "stand and bang" type fan with little-to-no appreciation of the ground game. But, hey, he's only seen one event. That's to be expected. Overall, though, Felger wasn't that harsh and even seemed to somewhat embrace the topic during the last two hours of yesterday's show. He claims to have really enjoyed the Diaz/Davis fight and the energy surrounding the Couture/Toney freak show.

I dont think felger gets that mma is already a huge deal, he was talking about the sport needs to embrace more of the punching style in order to bring in more fans. That may be true, but its not like the sport as it is constituted doesn't already have a huge number of fans and isn't making a ton of money with every ppv they do, sure its not the NFL, but I don't think theres anything they could do that would make it that, its not just enjoyed by cult fans, like he was saying, it does as well if not better than pretty much every other sport.

No, pretty much exactly that. It got a little tedious after the first hour or so. Especially because Mazz once again contributed nothing. I'm telling you, a combination of Bertrand/Adam Jones/other hosts could replace him easily.

But I give Felger credit for trying. I guess today we'll hear ALL about how the Red Sox didn't sign Teixeira and all of that good stuff.

Tony just had one of his rants: the "No-buzz Red Sox." He's comletely misstated Crawford's value as an upcoming FA. Two min's later the DelCarmen trade.

Tony should do one of two things before turning on his mic -- read his own stuff or, if it's not his stuff, find out who is writing under his name at the Globe. Snippets from yesterday's column:

If any of that sounds like a criticism of how the Red Sox do things, it isn’t. Rather, it is a compliment. One of the great strengths of the current Red Sox administration is that team officials generally do not succumb to emotion or public pressure. For as much as we laud someone like Terry Francona for maintaining his poise during times of crisis – deficits in the 2004 and 2007 playoffs come to mind – the same is true of upper management. The Red Sox devised their plan and they stick to it, and it has served them quite well.

On the even of September 2010, here’s the problem: you now see through it. Whether one measures the Red Sox’ Q rating through television ratings, talk-show volume, web hits or that intangible buzz, the Sox took a major hit this year. Broadcast ratings have plummeted. Secondary ticket sales have slowed to a crawl if not stopped altogether. Fenway Park has gone from among the most fashionable places to be seen to just another ballpark, and the timing could not be worse for a Red Sox administration that might have been planning for another lean year.

Seriously, might not that be, above all else, the reason the Sox put in a claim for Johnny Damon? The Sox lack star power. The Sox lack appeal. The problem now is not solely that there are better teams (plural) in the American League East, but that there are more exciting ones, too. The Red Sox are closer to fourth place than they are to second or first, and there appear to be no quick fixes on a relatively thin free agent market that could include Adrian Beltre, Victor Martinez and David Ortiz.

In the grand scheme of things – Epstein said last winter that 90 percent of Sox energy is focused on long-term planning – that is fine. Anyone who lived during all or part of that time from 1918-2004 won’t have a problem waiting four or five years. But for the first time during the Henry ownership, there has been a significant drop in interest coinciding with a long-term plan that seems to call for patience, which could create for an interesting offseason on Yawkey Way.

almost boston
Pedro to call in to mazz's show tonight around 6:20?

During the end of felger & mazz, felger teased a possible baseball reporters guest as someone who once threatened to drill a hall of famer in the ass.

Mazz worried about obvious tease bc this guest doesn't always answer his phone.

FWIW dcmissle, they used Mazz's article as a template and the debate was whether or not Luccino would let another year go without "big stars" here and continue to look "big picture" with Epstein (Mazz's points) even if profits go down. I enjoyed it.

I'm sorry I missed it today. What does Tony think they should do? Did he stand by his "compliment"? Would he have a problem waiting 4 or 5 years "in the grand scheme"? He's not an old guy by any stretch, but he's old enough to have endured a good chunk of thet 1918 to 2004 stretch he referred to in his column.

He's completely misstated Crawford's value as an upcoming FA.
Dumbest thing I heard in a while - "People are making Crawford out to be the next Rickey Henderson. But he only is probably good for 15 HR and 75 RBI a season. He's not one of the elite. He's not a run producer."

I have no gripe with their saying he is a 15 HR 75 RBI guy - that's been his average over the course of his career. Of course, to expect him to have high RBI totals when he's always been the Rays' table-setter is ridiculous and why using RBI as a stat is stupid (it would be much more valuable given Crawford's expectations on that team to look at his runs scored which they totally neglected). The major flaw in the argument and the part that really stuck out to me though was basically saying Crawford couldn't hold Rickey Henderson's jock... I had to check the totals upon getting home, but my hunch was right: Rickey Henderson never, ever, in 24 seasons of playing in the major leagues, had 75 RBIs in a season. He only had over 60 RBIs 3 of those seasons. Henderson also only eclipsed 15 HR 9 of those seasons as well.

So their point was... well, I'll be damned if I know what it was. Henderson is almost a perfect comp for Crawford if you look at the (per season) numbers, and by the way they were talking, they definitely concede that Henderson was a valuable player. Now obviously I don't know if Crawford will have Henderson's longevity, but on a season-by-season basis, the numbers are almost identical. So the whole argument smacked of being contrarian for contrarian's sake, which is what I absolutely despise about this show, especially when talking baseball.

*edit* I also wanted to go on record with this right now - guaranteed that Crawford goes somewhere else and next season Mazz is calling the Red Sox 'cheap' for not pursuing Crawford 'as hard as they could have', even though they were basically tearing Crawford up today.

I'm not sure what you are saying. You are right that the point of Carl Crawford is not his power or RBIs, and that wasn't the point of Rickey either. Those are, as you imply, stupid stats to cite. But it's also true that Rickey was a quantum leap better than Crawford. Crawford's OBP this year is .347, around his career average. When Henderson was 28 his OBP was .423 and he routinely put up years of over .400 in his ( very long) prime; he was a truly elite player in a way that Crawford will never approach.

I guess I'm saying that by the criteria that they were throwing out as the measuring stick (RBI and HR), Crawford and Henderson are similar. Had they expanded their reasoning into other stats, then clearly Henderson is a better player, but they are almost hell-bent on ignoring these other, more meaningful stats. I just think its ironic that they ignore these stats when it is against a player they don't like showing he's a good ballplayer (J.D. Drew) but they also ignore them when it would actually help them in their point as well, as it would have in this case.

I hope I'm being clear, there's a point I'm trying to make and I still don't know if I'm making it the way I'd like. Its late and English is defying me right now

I think their overall point was that they think the Sox would be stupid to pay big money for a "flashy" player like Crawford and I agree. It was also in the context of the Epstien (long term vision) vs. Lucchino (profit vision) moving forward discussion they were having today.

I told you guys, Mazz is right now just getting to around 2002 in terms of baseball philosophy. He hates guys like Ichiro and Crawford (and Ellsbury, though he obv isn't that good). In 6/7 years, if he's still on the radio, he'll be talking about defensive value and how the Red Sox need to sign more plus defenders, meanwhile they'll be onto the next inefficiency and he'll decry them for it because he won't understand it. This will occur possibly after another verbal smackdown from Theo.

Mazz admitted as much himself. He said that he looked back on Ichrio's MVP season and he can't believe that he voted for Ichiro that season, he feels stupid for doing so because he values players completely differently now (i.e. OPS is the be-all end-all). I guess you could say he's learning, but like I said he'll always be two steps behind the industry, but that's more than you could say for most baseball writers. I actually think Felger makes Mazz much worse, because he peer pressures him into putting his default setting at "negative/critical".

To be fair to him, he was (is?) an idiot for voting for Ichiro. Giambi had a 10 WAR season, which should almost always win you the MVP. Ichiro wasn't even close to that good, though he was very good.

You can reply "STEROIDS!!!" but nobody was talking about that yet in 2001, and they'd just voted Giambi the MVP the year before, so even if they knew they didn't care.

Very weak response by Felger yesterday to the caller whose first question was why Felger kept citing Ron Borges (given his track record) as the voice of authority on the state of the Pats. Felger hung up on him. Two can play that game, so I put in a CD.

He should have said:

"Caller ... you're right. As Pats beat writer for the competing paper for about 10 years, I had a front row seat to the Borges' shenanigans. Sad waste of talent. But I was glad he sucked because he made me look better.

But that was then and this is now, and guess what caller -- we are here primarily not to inform, but to entertain. So I bring you our version of Maximus -- Ron Borges."

Few do better at leaving out the facts (while repeatedly saying "Fact. Not opinion.") than Michael Felger!

Felger: "They gave up Richard Seymour for nothing."
Massaroti: "You're right, Mike."

-_-

Although to their credit today they have been quite critical of the Jets which is nice; in the past they have acted like the Jets are the annointed AFC champs.

It is possible, I suppose, that if there is labor armageddon, the NFLPA will decertify and the NFL draft will be declared an illegal restraint of trade. But that is very unlikely, and almost impossible to imagine happening before next April, when the Pats will have the Raiders first-round pick, which will be no lower than 32 overall. That is "something".

If you want to argue that the Pats accepted too much short term pain for too little long term gain in parting with Richard, fine. That's an acceptable argument. But this is nonsense, and should be well beneath someone who was a beat reporter for an NFL team for close to 10 years.

Both of these guys, by the way, labor under the illusion that Seymour could have been re-signed. Given Wilfork's demands and with Brady in the wings, he could not have been.

...and in what should not be a surprise at all, Seymour is a player that Felger has been quite critical of while he was here, at least for the last few years, but the second he's gone, he immediately drops the criticism and praises him excessively while bashing the Pats for trading him.

Can't speak for him, but for myself? I usually like Felger, especially when they're talking basketball or hockey, or some versions of football, but I tuned in yesterday to both of them stating that Kraft's comment of "Brady will be in camp, one way or another" in reference to his extension couldn't be interpereted as anything other than a threat to Tom, and in no way a show of faith by a guy who has said numerous times during the offseason that they will extend him, and the statement that the Red Sox threw in the towel on the season by not making a splash in the trade market. I promptly turned on my baseball america podcast I keep in reserve for days like today.

Here are the exact quotes from Kraft in the Times

CLEARLY a threat.

And it's the opposite story down the dial. I remember some guy calling up back in the day and saying he'd rather have Reggie Wayne than Deion Branch, and of course he was beat down in the three-on-one handicap match. Of course post-2005, if you called up to say that Branch was a #1 receiver and they missed him, same result. Not saying this justifies Felger "balancing the scales" or whatever, just that there's really no such thing as objectivity or intelligent discourse on these shows, it's entertainment pure and simple.

I don't think it's inconsisent to be on Seymour for not being the player he wants to be and simultaneously get on the patriots for not being willing to pay players like Seymour. You just need the word "like". Seymour was more hype than reality toward the end, but Felger has been very consistently against the team nickel and diming and not signing big name players (and i'm sure he'd prefer they have substance, something richard may have lacked by the end) due to terms like 'value' and a cap system that he thinks stopped being relevant years ago. I'm not sure that he's right, but I'm also not sure that it is hypocritical either

Rome is burning, Bob Kraft cheap. Via PFT.com --

Tom Brady's day had a scary start, but it's going to have have a happy ending.

Peter King reported during NBC's halftime show that the Patriots have finalized a four-year contract extension with Tom Brady that runs through 2014. The information comes directly from Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

Kraft and King didn't discuss contract terms, but King says it's "safe to say" Brady is now the league's highest paid play averaging roughly $19 million a year.

The deal will be official on Friday when the Patriots file paperwork with league office in New York.

Not a bad way for Brady -- not to mention the league -- to start the season.
Per the Globe, a League source confirmed 5 minutes ago that the deal is done.

Just got back from a car trip out. Mazz was bitching about how everyone feels a need to put their own stamp on the American anthem and how they should all just sing it like it was meant to be sung. Felger called him a crochety old man, then went on to ogle Colbie Caillat and say some borderline creepy things, like "I'd like to Bathe in the anthem from last night". I love Felger some times.

Felgy is going to destroy Moss tomorrow. Destroy.
I'm sure he will, as Randy did not have the goodamn common courtesy to mention Felgy by name --

I’ve been here for three years and this is my fourth season,” Moss said in his opening statement after making five catches for 59 yards. ”When it comes to football, I take my business seriously. I think there are some people are, I don’t want to say the organization, but I think around here in the New England area, there are some people who don’t want to see me do good.
I'm quite certain Randy Moss and Logan Mankins will exhaust tomorrow's football discussion.

Felger: "It was a nice win by the Pats"
Mazz: "You're right Mike"
Felger: "But the real story is the news that Kraft and his enormous ego blew the Logan Mankins deal"
Mazz: "You're right Mike"

Cue an hour of talk about how the Krafts are cheap and let personal business and emotions hurt the Patriots.

Felger: "Let's move on. It was a nice win by the Pats, but what about that A-Hole Randy Moss? This guy is a bad guy"
Mazz: "You're right Mike"

Cue an hour of talk about how this team will never win with Randy Moss because Randy's not a real football player.

Caller: "Hey guys, how about giving the Patriots some credit on the field?"
Felger: "Another footsie pajama wearing Patriots homer. Randy Moss cried and went off after a win. Bob Kraft coulda signed Mankins but blew it. These are facts, not opinions."
Mazz: "You're right Mike. Jesus, the Sox could have used Teixeira this weekend..."

There is no way Felger doesn't lead off with Moss. As much as he and Mazzbot love burying the Krafts for being "cheap", Felger LIVES for 2 things: Crushing Brett Favre and crushing Randy Moss.

Mazz is second only to Buckley, in this market, when it comes to circling the media wagons. I bet he will be even harsher on Moss than Felger.

Yeah, I did catch it and he actually gave Moss a total pass. Said he didn't think it was a big deal at all. He did rip Pats ownership but if the story is correct (which I didn't believe at first but I'm starting to now) then I think Kraft deserves criticism. Don't let ego get in the way of rings.

Say what you will about Felger, but these past few posts show that he's doing something right.

Granted we're just a couple of obsessive dweebs on a message board, but isn't a good radio host somebody who's opinions you care about?

It's clear that people care about what Felger has to say about things. I'm not saying he's the "greatest sports radio host of all time," but right now he's the best in this market. Is there another host who you even remotely care about what they think, or wonder what they think? I like "Dale and Holley" most days, but I've never spent a second thinking about what Dale or Michael has to say about something. I can't even remember the last time Ordway said something mildly provocative.

A radio host's job is stir conversation and entertain. In my mind, Felger does both of those things better than anybody else in Boston right now.

I'm right with you Phenom. People are mocking whats gonna happen today, and while some of it might be true, Felgers gift is that he's entertaining. His rants are funny and genuine. Now if you want to argue that having a parrot like Mazz next to him takes the show down then I agree. But today is gonna be must listen radio no matter what he has to say about Moss and Mankins. Based on the tv show last night I think he's gonna give Moss a pass and go after Kraft hard for both situations. He's making business decisions based on emotions, he's cheap, ect ect.

Either way I'm looking forward to see what he has to say.

I am a big fan of Felger-Mazz needs to go.

I will be listening-wondering how what Bob Kraft had to say on Dale and Holley this morning will be treated.

Kraft actually came on the radio as a "fan of the New England Patriots" to tell from his POV what happened with that situation. I wish Kraft would do this more often.

Wow, so 98.5 is the flagship station of the New England Patriots, and he runs to EEI to give them the scoop about the Mankins story. They must be pissed.

WEEI has the rights to Patriots Monday's and Friday's so they have access to the players/personnel.

Great point Phenom. I echo Rocco's take. I'm almost embarrassed to say that I'll see/hear something sports related and say, "Oh shit, I wonder what Felger is going to say about that...". I don't always agree with him, but I find him pretty genuine and I like his arguments. I never think of Andy Gresh unless I'm taking a dump.

I didn't hear the show but Dale and Holley usually do their Monday Football shows right at Patriot Place, so Kraft was probably right down the hall.
