Well, they're going to have plenty to talk about tomorrow, especially Mazz.

Since I no longer listen, has he made the comparison to the Japanese ace the Sox signed vs. the one the Yankees signed and how it worked out the way it always works out?

I'd expect the 4 draft picks to be a major topic by comparing this to the Meriweather draft (big gaps b/w picks) and preemptively arguing against the spin that the players they traded picks for count as this draft class (looking at Reiss here). They've already started doing this anyways.

Felger gives Pat's an "F" for draft; trading for players doesn't count, he says. Funny since he talks about how useless draft analysis is all the time, but now the Pat's are engaging in hubris by not making more than 4 picks. "He just wants everyone to know how much smarter he is than the rest of them so he just basically skips the draft and goes home to watch lacrosse!" (paraphrase)

Disclaimer: I am aware I don't have to watch Felger and Mazz and they are trolling. I am aware, but i feel obligated to offer this critique anyway. But thanks for your concern. .

Just like in the Cafardo and Peter King threads I want some people to listen/read and report back so I know what they are saying without listening or giving them clicks.
The downside to that is I may occasionally fall for a joke one of our long time posters makes, but that is a chance I'm willing to take.
You are doing valuable work, keep it up.

I haven't listened to F&M in several months and am currently stuck in a carpool with it on. They are still spewing everything chonce posted about the draft 2 hours ago. He did a fine job, but distilling this verbal waste into text form is impossible.

These guys have been hacks for a while, but this might be the most pathetic excuse for radio I have ever heard. Put me out of my misery.

"Yeah Felgah, maybe Belichick went to the lacrosse game so he could find the next Hogan, eva think of that?" This was actually said by a caller so I thought it was funny that they kept going with it.

They pointed out that they were making fun of Kiper and I forget who else gave the Patriots "A's" for the draft, when they had 4 picks in what was supposed to be a deep defensive draft. Saying that the Patriots deserved an F was overboard but so was saying that they deserved an A.

I agree with this. If the trades they had made resulted in Cooks, Ealy, Allen, and Gillislee being on full rookie contracts, then obviously the draft would be an A+++++++++. But since Cooks has only two years left (one of which will be at like $10M), and the other contracts are both shorter and higher dollar value than rookie contracts, you have to mark it down a bit. I love what they did with the picks they had, and I love the trades they made, but I think overall you have to give it more of a B+ or A-.

Plus most of what they are saying is trolling the "honks" and tongue in cheek to get the honks to call in and say stupid shit like the reason for going to the lacrosse game.

If you're listening to it now I think they're doing a great job discussing the Adam Jones incident, not belittling Jones or saying that he's making it up but not going overboard in that Boston should be ashamed either. It was a couple of fucking idiots.

Took 2 minutes for Felger and Mazz to start the show with IT is not a max guy, not impressed with 53 points in the playoffs, Wizards play no defense.....It is Mazz, for the most part (and JImmy Stewart, which is odd since he is Team Horford)...

Anyway, devoting a show to saying "wow, that was the best playoff performance we have seen in almost a decade," seems to have been in order. But too much to ask.

Disclaimer: I am aware I don't have to watch the show

One of Felger's positives about IT....."In a league where guys want time off for everything, he missed no time at all for his sister's thing. Two separate trips and missed no time."

It wasn't too much to ask since Felger made all of the pro Thomas points that you wanted made.
Yep. People hear what they want to hear. Felger could not have said more nice/positive/supportive things about Thomas's performance. And he replied to this criticism directly when he told a caller, "saying Thomas might not be worth a max contract is NOT disparaging the player or his effort last night."

Via Joey Morona of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the local ESPN Radio affiliate fired Sabrina Parr after she offered this prediction about Peppers on the air: “He’s not going to make it because he’s on the Lean and the Molly.”

The “Lean” is a concoction of cough syrup and soda, also known as “Purple Drank,” among other names. Molly is Ecstasy. Both as illegal, and both are banned by the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

A debate erupted after the allegation was made, with hosts Tony Rizzo and Aaron Goldhammer, with Parr eventually claiming that left tackle Joe Thomas is “on the Lean, too.” (She later claimed she was joking about Thomas.)

The dismissal of Parr came just hours after the comments were made. ESPN Cleveland is an official partner of the Browns.
Cleveland rules ... are not Boston rules.

I hate defending Felger and Mazz, but as far as I know (and I don't listen all that much, but you don't have to listen all the time to get their schtick) they never actually come out and accuse people directly of being on any particular substance like that. It's typically something like "cough cough" or a reference to avocado ice-cream, and then a disclaimer that they don't care or everyone is doing something.

It's shameful and cowardly, but it also insulates them because they never make any specific accusations.

Yeah, but the thinly-veiled codes are just like saying that that athlete is taking something. And while they don't give a shit, they know full well that there is a percentage of their audience that DO care. So, in effect, the audience is doing their dirty work.

If you ask me, it's a whole lot worse than Felger or Mazz putting themselves out there and saying, "I think that Tom Brady (or whomever) takes HGH or steroids or some other PED". Mainly because a. there's a denial of culpability on their part "We didn't say anything like that! You heard what you wanted to hear!" and b. if the opposite is true, Brady (or whomever) is 100% clean, they're technically not wrong. The best part for them? They never have to apologize.

I agree that it's shameful and incredibly cowardly but it doesn't really insulate them. We all know what they're insinuating.

While Felger can't say what he thinks as definitive fact, by coughing he's not doing anything other than a radio bit vs saying "I don't know for certain, but I suspect Pedro took PEDs during his career". There is no legal threat from saying an unfounded opinion. Jerry Callahan has proven this for decades. Felger is excellent at arguing his opinions, even when they are wildely unpopular. And he doesn't lack stamina for arguing with callers. By coughing, instead of speaking, I agree that he's doing a weird code that is way beneath him.

I know that there isn't anything illegal in what he's saying, I don't think that there are many athletes who would bring Felger, or member of the media for that matter, to court for making PED accusations. My point is that we all know exactly the message Felger is getting across when he "coughs" or talks about avocado ice cream.

He's not that clever.

Yeah, so what I said basically. If you actually listened to the Pedro stuff, it was exactly as I described above. Lots of suggestion and supposition with a lot of caveating and couching.

I agree with JMOH that everyone knows what they mean, and I said above that in a lot of ways it is worse than what the person in Cleveland did that got them fired, but it's not the same as accusing an active NFL player of using a specific substance without any proof whatsoever.

The bottom line is that program directors and station managers have mortgages to cover. That explains the existence on the air of these two -- and the even worse two on 'EEI in the early morning.

Serious question - why does Jim Murray even have a job on the top-rated sports show in the 1st or 2nd biggest sports town in the country?

It's not like he was a beat writer first, which you could at least say about Felger or Mazz.

He is absolutely worthless. I'd take Tanguay or Cafardo over him. And his David Price voice act is far from funny. It's like the kid from grade school who discovers that eating his boogers makes a few people laugh, and just holds on to that bit for as long as it gets him a seat at the lunch table.

Allow me to rephrase. Is it too much to ask they don't open the show, and thus paint the entire discussion, based on this question, when (in my view) the far more compelling story was the 50+ points he just put up, setting all sorts of Celtics records, just the night before.

Here is my primary problem with them and their coverage of the Celtics (or the Patriots, frankly): they act as if the vocal minority of Celtics fans who think they can do no wrong -- the blind, uncritical lemmings -- reflect the whole fanbase. And then they very cynically cover even amazing wins by the team, because some idiot says the C's will be CLE. Well, sure some idiot says that and sure they put him on the air to amplify him. But there are plenty of logical, thinking Celtic fans who are aware of their limitations but would like them to not to shroud all their coverage with cynical hatred.

Sure, they throw in compliments. But it is obvious the overall tone is negative. Today they are laughing because Jim Murray is literally lecturing these "green teamers" who say Boston will beat CLE. By 2:30 he went on a visibly angry rant at the Celtics fans delusions. The vast majority of fans expect to lose by a lot. But even the day after they win a game 7 and meet every reasonable expectation they are lecturing the fan base -- by 2:31 pm. I mean putting an asterisk on the Bulls win? That is high trolling. And one can argue "don't take them seriously," but your quote above it telling me they are being reasonable. But they clearly can't stop having arguments with a tiny fraction of the fan base and they keep moving the goal post. They just made the EFC and by 2:31 Murray is laughing at how dumb Celtics fans are. Well I expect them to get swept and still think Jim is being an asshole.

Maybe he will also say "listen all credit to them, BUT....INSERT 3 hours of trolling." But if you are defending this radio show's coverage of the NBA I truly don''t know how or why. Not only are they trolling the fans but they also don't know much about the league to boot.

They just liked this moment where he was covering sports in Atlanta on radio and the Bruins won vs Toronto in game 7 and he went on this huge celebratory rant. It was amusing, but to hire him over Keefe was truly stupid. Murray was never good, but he is getting worse as he adopts the personality of the hosts. Bertrand at least challenged the pair of simpletons on occasion.

Felger & Mazz: Jim Murray Says Celtics Should Consider Firing Brad Stevens If They Get Swept

CBS-Boston
April 20, 2017

Get the Hot Take Police on the line! Jim Murrays says if the Celtics get swept by the Bulls in the first round of the playoffs, they should consider firing head coach Brad Stevens.
(emphasis added).

The question answers itself. See bold above.

And he fits well because his twins reveal no beat writing experience. It's irrelevant to the mission.

Remember, these guys swore solemnly that Rex Ryan and the Jets were on the come, and on the cusp of eclipsing the locals.

He's being an over the top ballbreaker today regarding the Celtics and their fans.

That said, I'd ram a pencil through both eardrums rather than listen to Tanguay five days a week.

Would love to see him eat his words and have the Celtics give the Cadavers a serious push.

Make it happen Theo.

Yeah, I remember them playing that on his first day. So I guess the guy is a Bruins fan, which makes him Felger's binky, and since Felger has so much clout nowadays, they hired him for that reason. Pretty weak.

His Brad Stevens robot routine is unfunny as well. It's like, Dude, you're trying to hard. It's almost like he knows he doesn't belong here.

One does not have to expose a low life. They reveal themselves freely.

This would come under the rubric of fake news. Last I checked, IT wanted to continue playing, and the team shut him down.

These two and their sidekick are just really bad people. Full stop.

It would be pretty interesting to hear an intelligent caller call Tony M on his "quitter" comment in the same vein that Bruce Allen did. The hemming and hawing would be entertaining.

It was nonstop too. Allen was incredulous that someone, anyone, could pick any team other than the Patriots for anything. He was finding boogeymen everywhere too. It got to be too much.

I think that Spygate broke a lot of people's brains around here. Myself included BTW, but I skew opposite, I just don't care about anything that comes from the NFL anymore, aside from the games.

There was another Pats guy that I followed and within literal seconds after the Malcolm Butler interception in Super Bowl 49, he was retweeting negative tweets from the July before. I mean, if you can't enjoy a moment like that without shoving someone's nose in it, then I mean, what's the point of sports? And these tweets were kind of innocuous, like "the Pats line looks a little shaky" or "How much does Tom Brady have left in the tank?".

I don't get it.

This is the clown who said a few weeks ago that the Celtics should consider firing Brad Stevens if they were swept by the Bulls. Meanwhile, in this very basketball savvy city, Stevens gets the nod among knowledgeable people of right now being a top tier coach in the League and certainly projected to get better. And they have talked about him often.

If this kind of stupidity does it for anyone, by all means have had it. It's right up there with giving the Patriots an "F" for their draft -- an assessment that belies 10 years service as football beat writer. But it's ultimately harmless.

Calling IT a quitter in this post-season is not only ignorant, but also loathsome. It ranks right up there with baseless accusations of PED abuse, and feels even worse. One has to be an incredible asshole to tweet something like that in the present circumstances.

F&M are bizarrely obsessed with the "quitter" thing. For them, the worst offense imaginable in professional sports is apparently "quitting", whatever that actually means. The great thing for them about this particularly dumb sportz-take is that they can freely accuse anyone of quitting at any time, and proceed to blather on and on about it for hours, and no one can really dispute their take, since there is no objective measure for what constitutes "quitting". It's a fabulous, trolly sports radio tactic that no doubt helps them fill hours of airtime. It also has the side benefit that it can be used to bolster with one of their other trolly sports angles, which is "not giving the local teams credit when they win". As in, "the Celtics didn't win Game 3 against the Cavs, the Cavs gave the game away by quitting".

All that being said, Mazz is a huge a-hole for accusing IT of being a quitter, given the events that have transpired over the past few weeks.
