Mazz on Boston sports tonight aftee game 4 vs his time on the radio is night and day. On TV he had a good discussion with reasonable takes on the red Sox strengths and weaknesses. He even described previous year's teams as B or B- while this year's team as an A-. He and merloni talked at length about the team and never once did Mazz say anything sucked like he usually does on the radio. Even when they discussed Price in the ALCS it was a more substantive debate with actual data. Neither trusts Price, but it wasn't all hysterics. I watched for quite a while as they ran down the alds and alcs. I can't handle F&M for more than 2 minutes. For some reason that sells. Too bad he feels the needs to stoop so low.

When Mazz was on WEEI many years ago, he was actually very reasonable and basically never resorted to schtick and hot takes like he does now. It’s too bad that guy is never coming back.

I have basically sworn off Boston sports radio due to the hot takez but post ALDS victory I was obviously craving everything baseball so I ended up listening to the Baseball Reporters and it was actually very reasonable baseball talk. The real Tony Massarotti shows up in flashes, and its actually pretty refreshing vs the caricature he usually plays.

Kinda makes you wonder, if they actually took the chance and had *gasp* reasonable sports talk, could they maybe turn that into ratings as opposed to settling for the race to the average that the spreadsheet says is the way to go?

It's also a lot easier. Takes work to keep informed and updated on different teams every day.

Was switching between stations the other day during lunch. Sportshub promo had Mazz ranting completely over the top negative hot take.

Weei promo had morning show talking shots at Ordway and company.

Really those are the options for sports radio in Boston these days and why I rarely listen anymore.

Mazz (2014): God, the Red Sox stink. I wish they'd make the playoffs!
Mazz (2017): God, the Red Sox stink. I wish they'd advance past the first round!
Mazz (2018): God, the Red Sox stink. I wish they'd play the game the right way!

Tony Massarotti, never ever happy.
Neither are his listeners. Why would anyone listen to this crap unless they want to be miserable? There's no insight or anything, it's all trolling.

A drummer I play with is really big into sports and listens to TSH pretty much all day while at work. He's a super positive guy. He's not negative. He's not the caricature of the Boston sports dipshit that was so common pre-2004. So I asked him how on earth he could listen to the non-stop contrived negativity all day and not want to blow his brains out.

Paraphrasing a bit, but he said that it all made him laugh. The more ridiculous the hot take; the more negative the nonsense after a win, the more he loved it. He disagrees, he says, with almost everything said on either sportsball station, but looks at it like pure entertainment, or like WWE events.

To be honest, this perspective mystifies me, but maybe there are more people with that attitude than I'd think?

Put this way it makes sense, though I could not get past rewarding the two of them by listening.

But honestly, guilty pleasure. Not to turn this in a political direction, but I view Trump campaign rallies the same way. And more than that, I capture the best parts off YouTube and send them to family members who share my political views but have no sense of humor and are deadly serious about everything 100% of the time. And when these family members melt down over “Pocahontas” or whatever, I laugh some more.

When I first started listening to them, they made me laugh, but it didn't take long before I wasn't amused at all anymore because it was all the exact same jokes over and over again.

Fool me once...

So I tuned in today to hear how these guys open/hot take on what was arguably one of the best Sunday nights (worst case top 10)in Boston sports history, and these d-bags are on the Pats D for getting torched in the 2nd half, and the Sox sucking at home. Mazz was particularly brutal.

I undertand they're playing radio for ratings, and manufacture controversy, but these tag-team assholes, absolutely suck the joy and fun out the games.

Remember when the foil was the team we were playing against, or the fans from the opposing city, or the homers on the competing team's radio station, the CHB? Apparently that isn't good enough anymore. Apparently we all need to yell at each other to enjoy our local sports teams now.

When I was a kid, the Sox generally sucked and Pats didn't exist, but when they came into existence, they were ok/mediocre but nowhere close to being in the same league (literally and figuartively) to the NFL elites like the Packers, Colts or Browns. But I watched and learned to love the games for the great players playing.

I can play the hot take game too and be a snarky asshole, I'm an internet veternan after-all, but how about this hot take?

The Sox down 1-0 to the World champs, a very good relentless team with in general better starting pitching and a scary good line-up , and facing them with a guy who never wins in the post-season, battles this very good team, came back from a 2-run deficit, and won, in a very entertaining game, that wasn't settled to the last out?

Or focus on a mediocre Pats D, playing their ass off in the first half keeping a supremely talented Chiefs to 3 FGs in the 1st half?

Nah, never happen

How thin skinned is Michael Felger?

For those on mobile, it was basically a caller hoping to hear F&M eat a little crow about some player predictions (started to talk about Van Noy and had two others to bring up) Felger quickly cut him off leading to this exchange (paraphrasing)

Felger: How does Sony Michele look?
Caller: Huh? Sony Michele?
Felger: Yeah, how does Sony Michele look?
Caller: I think he looks fabulous.
Felger: Ohh! Yeah, he looks great. He's in the hospital.

He's the absolute worst. Does he even believe what he says?

I have a few min where I was bored and put it on just now. So far, Mazz thinks we should boo Dave Roberts because f' him, it was 14 years ago and get over it and Felger thinks that Dave Roberts' steal is overrated and not really important and completely overrated. Mouthbreather radio at its best.

I haven’t listened to these jackasses in a long time but I may have to today. If only to see how they manage to spin last nights game into a harbinger of doom.
Mazz was on T&R this morning and gave his preview at the end of the interview (he transitioned to his WWE persona). Sale is done, he didnt like Benintendi effort in the outfield, and there was one more that's escaping me I think.

Didn't like Benintendi's effort in the outfield? Did he or anyone else take into account if that game was an April or May game it's probably a rainout? Or at least a 60-120 minute delay. Betts' popup was a combination of misplayed and terrible field conditions. The liner Benintendi backed off of probably had a lot to do with that, too.

I thought benintendi might have lost it in the lights. But beyond that, you dive for that with the game on the line. Not with 7 or 8 innings to go.
(Benintendi's effort on his own popup was unfortunate. He probably could've been on 2nd.)
I'll listen to idiots like that when winners are decided by style points. "While Boston had more runs, 8 to 4, the Dodgers were awarded 12 style points bringing their total to 16. The Sox only amassed 4, bringing the final score to 16-12, Dodgers."

Kimbrel is still a big question mark, last night's clean inning could be a fluke. Also, ERod got lucky when pitching to Bellinger, he threw a very hittable pitch on the one Bellinger flied out to CF on.

Oh, Mazz.

I've never listened to these people but judging from this thread, they seem bad at trolling.

For proper trolling, today is the moment when they should change it up and start overpraising the team and goading the fans into raising their expectations too high, like talking about how they are unbeatable and who should lead the parade after they win.

Then if the team loses, the fans will be angrier and will call in to vent and trolls can go back to bashing the team, which will then get more callers. And if the team does win, then the trolls get to go on and on about how they were right and they called it and predicted it and are sports geniuses.

It's pretty elementary trolling 101 that they seem to be failing at.

I thought Manfred’s length of games comments were absurd. I don’t think of the West Coast in any aspect of my life, but I need to factor it in for playoff baseball - OK.
The NFL schedule is entirely geared toward the East Coast. It's ratings seem to be holding up.

I'd argue the NFL schedule is geared well for the west coast.

As it is a Sunday, when most are off from work (certainly the 9-5ers), it isn't that difficult for a west coaster to tune in the early game at 10am and certainly would have no problems tuning into the late game at 5:30. Were I an NFL fanatic, I'd rather be on the west coast so I wouldn't have to wait through the whole morning for the games to start, and wouldn't have to stay up until near midnight to see the end of the last game.

I don't know why, but Manfred wouldn't speak to the fact that ratings from 11pm to midnight are almost always bigger than ratings from 6pm-7pm, or 7pm-8pm. I know early-rising east coasters complain about it, and there's never any shortage of "won't someone think of the children" hysteria, but TV networks aren't stupid. If ratings would be better with earlier start times then there would be earlier start times.

Mazz has been wrong about every single thing to do with the Red Sox this year, it's astounding. JD was a terrible signing, Dombrowski didn't do enough at the trade deadline, they can't beat good teams, Price will sh*t his pants, the bullpen is a fatal flaw, the Yankees are better than them, the Astros are better than them, the Dodgers are a bad match up. It's laughable, it really is.

I dont think Mazz was the only one saying most of these things. A lot of these were pretty universal, even on this board.

Mazz: "Did you hear Dombrowski, Mike? He gave credit to EVERYONE except the players!"

Felger: "You mean it was the nerds that won the championship, right Mazz?"

Mazz: "Exaaaaactly. I haaaaated that."

Felger: "Yep. Right. That's why the Red Sox won. It was the nerds. God I hate that."

Mazz: "And did you see Price's tweet?"

Felger: "Mazz... you know I don't do Twitter... what did it say?" (knowing full well what Price said)

Mazz: "Murray... look it up for me."

Murray: "He said (*PriceVoice*), #Iholdthecardsnow bitches with those dumb Ssh emoji things."

Mazz: "What a complete jack wagon."

They will poke and provoke and crap on this all afternoon.

Sad, sad little trolls.

I think they weren't bad today, they probably spent a little too much time on the mistakes in game 3 and the length of game, but overall gave the team the credit they deserved and accepted that David Price, their punching bag for 3 years is that no more.

The callers though... wow. Such utter garbage on such a great day. Literally the first caller, the day after they win the championship is whining and moaning about managerial mistakes Cora made 3 games ago. You got that, the guy wanting to dedicate the call to his grandfather, the guy who left the phone on hold so the music was playing when they went to him, and numerous other callers they hung up it was just so bad. Kudos to them for knowing when to stop.

Jim Murray is officially the worst. He is screaming at the Patriots for not trading, not humbled the least in his Red Sox asterisk and nonsense.

I get it, but the Pat's did trade for Gordon. That would be the top news of the day if it happened today.
