(Iowa)...The proud and quintessential Midwestern state, usually only in the spotlight every four years during presidential campaigns, will be hosting a Major League Baseball game for the first time when the White Sox and Yankees play at a temporary venue built for about 8,000 fans in tiny Dyersville — population “about 4,400, we're hoping for in the next census," said mayor Jim Heavens.
The event, part of MLB's increased effort to grow the game by setting up shop in places without in-person access to the highest level of the sport, has been in the works for years. The original plan to play in 2020 was postponed when the coronavirus forced a shortened schedule at mostly empty ballparks, but if the White Sox, the Yankees or the Iowans became impatient then they were out of step with the spirit of the film.
“The one constant through all the years,” as the sage author Terence Mann declared to Ray Kinsella in the film, “has been baseball.”
Dyersville found its place on the map through the movie that starred Costner, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta and Amy Madigan, but the sport has been entrenched in the town for more than a century. Commercial Club Park is where the team from Beckman Catholic High School and the local semipro club play, a spot as much at the heart of the community as the well-kept farms around it.
About one-third of the crowd on Thursday is expected to be Iowa residents.

This whole promotion irks me to no end.

They are promoting it like they are going to be playing on the actual field from the movie. This isnt that.

A new 8,000-seat facility was constructed for the game, located a quarter-mile west of the diamond from the movie. The field dimensions are 335 feet to left and right fields, 380 feet to the power alleys and 400 feet to straightaway center field, surrounded by 159 acres of corn.
The dimensions and appearance of the stadium are meant to resemble old Comiskey Park, the White Sox’s home from 1910-90. A corn maze leads fans from the movie site to the stadium.

And quite honestly they've gone though this exercise of trying to promote the game in a place without in person access to MLB games by making less than 3,000 tickets available to Iowa residents to play a one game engagement? I'm guessing the majority of those tix will go to well connected Iowans with just a smattering of townsfolk.

What will they do with the site after the game is over, the fans and players have left, and all that remains are a few bubblegum wrappers and empty cobs?
I'm sure they justified it by saying they can do future exhibitions like this one as well as host other events, maybe youth/high school tournaments or something. The fortunate thing is that the park doesn't seem to be all that elaborate. Scaling it down (specifically the bleachers) and letting the local high school team call it home is probably within reason.

I'm with bsj though. Use the real (movie) field or don't bother at all. Of course, the real field is nowhere near MLB dimensions and is ill-suited for actual game play so it will never happen. The only positive thing is that they didn't ruin the original field by modifying it to be MLB ready.

I'd like the opinions on the success of this initiative from the 40 towns that lost their minor league teams this year.

Aside from that - I guess it could be interesting to watch, but the relationship to the movie is quite thin.

I’m a misanthrope who thought this film sucked back in the day and don’t care about this any more or less than any other Yankee game, but I do think it’s kind of cool/crazy that Yankee beat reporter Bryan Hoch is so revved up for it that when his flight from Newark to Iowa was cancelled last night (bad weather here), he rented a car and is driving the thousand miles, with social media updates along the way.

It's cool enough. It'll be even cooler if a couple of dead baseball players come out of the corn fields.

I actually think the idea is really great in terms of growing the sport locally. Pick a place locally where baseball isn't immediately available in person and have a few guest games there every year. I'd even consider getting 5-10 games in that spot per season for all different teams.

I think it's an incredibly cool thing but I'm a total sap who cries every time I watch the damn movie.

Ruth and Gehrig, circa 1927, most likely, and the Yanks will add them to the roster at 1927 prices to stay under the cap.
Perfect Game can run showcases there for 500 kids a weekend at $1,000 a pop…
is there infrastructure for that? Hotels, restaurants, supplies, airport?

It's really dumb they built a stadium for ONE game and it's played on a weekday night, not even a weekend. Or a series. Or multiple different games.

Put the ASG there, do something to make it cool. A Thursday night game between non-rivals that are in seperate divisions moves no needles.

It'll all be decided by ratings. If, given the downsides you point out, this draws an audience, it'll become a yearly event.

Re ratings: Its the only MLB game scheduled for prime-time tonight (3 west-coast games start around 9:45P) and it has two big market teams alive and well contending for post-season play to attract an audience, but it may be hurt by the NFL's 2 pre-season games tonight and Boston, Washington, Philly and Pittsburgh probably watching more NFL than MLB. I'll probably watch the open to see Buck do some iteration of "if we build it" schtick, and then mostly watch the Pats.

I think its mostly a one-trick pony for MLB.

Why the grouchiness about the field? It was a movie set. The concept is fun and means a lot to millions. Enjoy the one game or don't watch.

Well, is it not warranted? I’m not feeling the magic here.
Magic must balance against money. The Costner baseball movies all understand you can love the game but at the end of the day it's also a business. Here's James Earl Jones reminding Kevin Costner he can monetize the ghosts:

They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway, not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past."Of course, we won't mind if you look around," you'll say. "It's only twenty dollars per person." They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it. For it is money they have and peace they lack.

This is all cheesy but also kind of fun, I’ve seen a lot of social media posts about this game from friends who generally seem interested. I give credit to MLB for doing this, no matter what you think of the movie, a lot of people remember it fondly.

I love Field of Dreams, but this is beyond dumb. I feel like 80% of people who tune in are going to be disappointed when they realize what's going on.

Well, at least they're allowing players of color on the field, unlike the movie.

I liked the movie, but it bothered me that no black or Latinx players seemed to be on the field. And Frank Whaley's young Archie Graham character mentions at some point that Gil Hodges is there, so it's not like all the ghosts were players from before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier.

It kind of makes me wonder what actually did happen to Terence Mann when we went off into the cornfield with that group of ghost players.
